Hurricane Lane may have passed by the island chain over the weekend, but Hawaii is still feeling the storm's aftereffects as residents recover from days of heavy rain and remain on the lookout for even more showers.Lane dropped 52.02 inches of rain on Hawaii from August 22-26, the second highest rainfall total from a tropical cyclone in the US since 1950, according to preliminary data from the National Weather Service (NWS).That's behind only the 60.58 inches dumped on Nederland, Texas by Hurricane Harvey last year.Hawaii's Big Island -- the easternmost island in the chain -- was hammered hardest by rain. Some residents there had to be evacuated, with water rescues occurring in Hilo and Keaau, the NWS said. A number of roads were closed by flooding and landslides. 782

IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) - South Bay residents have an opportunity to sound off over the sewage coming up from Mexico, leading to beach closures. The U.S. section of the International Boundary and Water Commission is holding a forum on the topic Thursday. The sewage either comes from Tijuana runoff or the Punta Bandera treatment plant."I would love to surf everyday without worry," said Imperial Beach councilwoman Paloma Aguirre. House Democrats have failed to override President Donald Trump’s veto of a measure that would have reversed the Education Department’s tough policy on loan forgiveness for students misled by for-profit colleges. The House voted 238-173 on Friday in support of the override measure, coming up short of the two-thirds majority needed to send it to the Senate. It's a victory for Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, whose policy on student loan disputes was in jeopardy after Congress voted to reverse it in March. It now remains in place and will take effect July 1.The resolution would have repealed the final rules related to discharges of loans for borrower defense to loan repayment and other circumstances and prohibit reissuing similar rules in the future, according to the Congressional Budget Office. 812

If you ask most Americans, finding work isn't that difficult these days. But getting paid enough to get by still remains a problem. The percentage of residents who think jobs in their area are plentiful spiked to 50% last month, the highest reading since the Pew Research Center began asking the question 16 years ago. Those perceptions match reality. 362
