A backpack holding an incendiary device and items that could be used for an abduction were beneath the car in which a retired administrator was found stabbed to death on the campus of California State University Fullerton, authorities said Monday.The victim was identified by Fullerton police as Steven Shek Keung Chan, 57, of Hacienda Heights. He'd retired from the school but worked at the international student affairs office as a consultant, officials said.His body was found with multiple stab wounds inside the vehicle in a campus parking lot, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene."Investigators now believe the victim was targeted based on their investigation," Fullerton police said in a statement.Police are looking for the attacker, who is described as a man in his mid-20s with black hair, wearing a black shirt and black pants.The backpack was left by Chan's assailant, said Fullerton police Lt. Jon Radus. The city's police force is leading the investigation. No motive was disclosed.The Orange County Sheriff's Department bomb squad found the backpack, Radus said. A former Michigan high school resource officer was sentenced to one year in jail after being convicted of sexually assaulting three female students.Former Lansing Police Department Officer Matthew Priebe, 35, pleaded no contest to five charges in connection to three victims, including criminal sexual conduct against a minor, two counts of assault, misconduct in office, and attempted criminal sexual conduct. A no contest plea results in a conviction without the defendant admitting guilt.A sixth charge for sending sexually explicit material to a minor was dropped as a part of his plea deal, according to court records.Ingham County Judge Joyce Draganchuk also sentenced Priebe to five years of probation, and he is required to register with the Michigan Sex Offender Registry for 25 years according to court documents.The sentence was the maximum allowed under Priebe's plea agreement."To say you violated your role as a police officer would be an understatement," Judge Draganchuk said to Priebe at his sentencing Tuesday, according to 1054

WASHINGTON, D.C. – They are three simple digits that could be the difference between life and death. A proposed three-digit number – 9-8-8 – is on the verge of becoming the new nationwide hotline for suicide prevention. “I think that shortening the number to three digits really has the opportunity to save so many lives,” said Alison Malmon, founder of Active Minds, a national non-profit focusing on mental health. “The prominence that this three-digit number will bring to suicide prevention is extraordinary.” For Malmon, a new suicide prevention hotline is personal. “As the survivor of my brother's suicide, it really means so much to me to know that lives will be saved through culture change and through bringing more prominence to the issues around suicide prevention that this three-digit number will bring,” she said. For years, the suicide prevention hotline has been a 10-digit 800-number: 1- 800 – 273 – TALK. Mental health experts say shortening it makes it easier to remember and could save lives in the process. “If we were in an emergency situation, we're stressed and it's hard for us to remember a lot of things,” said Charles Ingoglia, president of the National Council for Behavioral Health. “And so, I think the idea behind moving to a three-digit number related to suicide is to facilitate people being able to contact help easily and quickly.” Each year, more than 47,000 people in the U.S. die by suicide: that’s one person, nearly every 12 minutes. “If you look at where we are now the highest numbers of suicide we've seen since World War II,” said Colleen Creighton of the American Association of Suicidology. “So, clearly we need to change something we need to get something done and having a really easily accessible three-digit code is the way to go.” It’s a move welcomed by those forced to face a loved ones’ loss to suicide. “There's so much change on the horizon,” Malmon said. Beyond the number change, experts caution that there needs to be funding for local call centers around the country to take on any added call volume from the new number.
