The strike that closed West Virginia's public schools for four days is over, West Virginia Gov. But there are others, such as seniority and less stringent criteria that allow for noncertified teachers -- something Peters doesn't think should happen.She told "On the Story with Erica Hill" that teachers want to feel "valued and respected."Peters, who has 16 years of service and says she makes ,000, said teachers want a wage competitive with surrounding states. "We take care of the most important thing in our state, our children," she said.Legislation sparked strikeThe walkout -- which kept the state's roughly 277,000 public school students out of class -- came after Justice signed legislation late on the night of February 21, granting teachers a 2% pay increase starting in July, followed by 1% pay increases over the next two years.But the bill did not address further concerns of teachers, including issues with the teachers' public employees insurance program, the rising costs of health care and a tax on payroll deduction options, according to Christine Campbell, president of the American Federation of Teachers-West Virginia.Many people in West Virginia said that the high health insurance costs they face are the main sticking point in the work stoppage. The romaine lettuce outbreak has many consumers thinking about where their crops are grown.One rooftop greenhouse company in Chicago says their lettuce is safer and longer-lasting.Jenn Frymark, the chief agriculture officer and manager of Gotham Greens, pulls out a head of lettuce and immediately starts to eat it."No, you don't need to wash it,” Frymark says. “We don't have that on our package, but there's no reason for me to wash it. I never wash any of our lettuce at home. It's amazing; nothing touches it; it’s so clean.”Here at Gotham Greens, lettuce is grown differently.  They do it hydroponically. That means it’s grown without soil, but in a nutrient-rich water. Instead of a traditional farm field, this lettuce is grown on rooftop greenhouses.Their space on Chicago's south side is the largest rooftop greenhouse in the country.  Because of the controlled environment, crops can grow in a third of the time of a traditional field.“We're giving this plant everything it wants: the right day temp, the right night temp, the nutrients, CO2 levels, air circulation, the water,” Frymark explains. “I mean, these are very coddled plants and they have everything they need, and they can just grow in this perfect environment and reach maturity very quickly.”Gotham Greens sells to grocery stores in the Chicago and New York metro areas, as well as select Whole Foods stores. The product goes from the greenhouse directly to grocery shelves in a day and a half.The company’s lettuce also lasts longer than the traditional grocery lettuce out here. Frymark says their product can last up to two to three weeks in the fridge. Additionally, Gotham Greens prices are comparable to other organic produce.Frymark also says their method dramatically lowers the risk for foodborne illness.“There [are] no manures, there’s no water sources that could be contaminants,” she says. “We don't have birds and animals getting into the field.”She says the company is expanding and plans to open more rooftop greenhouses in the near future. 2053

The recount effort underway in Georgia has uncovered roughly 2,600 ballots that hadn’t originally been included in the tally.State officials say county election officials in Floyd County didn’t upload in-person early votes from a memory card into a ballot scanning machine, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution newspaper.Floyd County is located in northwest Georgia.In the uncounted votes, there were 1,643 new votes for President Donald Trump and 865 votes for President-elect Joe Biden. County officials say these ballots rectify their discrepancy between the number of people who checked-in to vote and the number of ballots counted in Floyd County.President Trump's campaign issued a statement Tuesday afternoon in response to reports of the previously unaccounted ballots."Recent revelations from Georgia's ongoing statewide recount have shown that President Trump was absolutely correct to raise concerns about widespread voting irregularities that have favored the Biden-Harris ticket," the statement reads. "The State of Georgia must not certify its results until the recount is done accurately and the results are correct."“It’s not an equipment issue. The separation of church and state has come under much scrutiny during this election season.At Zion Baptist Church in Denver, Pastor Rev. Frank Davis is encouraging members of his congregation to vote with faith.“My faith is voting what the bible says about right and wrong, about what the bible about a good neighbor,” he said.While leading a prayer service, Rev. Davis addressed issues ranging from race and religion to prophecies and politics.“America cannot be great with the division that it shares,” he said.A recent survey by the PEW Research Center shows nearly two-thirds of Americans want religious institutions to stay out of politics.Some churches, however, are still getting involved.During this presidential election, members of Zion Baptist Church are stepping outside of their house of worship and helping voters on the ground level.“As a faith-based entity, as a Christian entity, we believe that we are guided by principals that are really higher than day-to-day politics,” said Gwendolyn Mami, one of many members of Zion Baptist Church volunteering their time during this election by providing voters free rides to polling sitesVolunteers are also picking up and delivering ballots to those unable to do so for themselves.It’s a different kind of church service and comes at a time when there are questions nationally about both voter fraud and voter suppression.“This is a very strange time in which we are living,” Mami said. “There is a lot of confusion there is a lot of misinformation.”While Zion Baptist has a long history of political and social involvement in their community, Rev.
