SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — California Highway Patrol officers played the part of Santa Claus for one little girl who made a very big difference this summer.The lights were flashing and Christmas music was blasting through the loudspeaker as officers drove downtown toward 4-year-old Leilani's home.Leilani and her dad Lydell Short met them on the sidewalk.One officer walked up, crouched, and asked Leilani in a soft voice if she remembers them.She nodded.She and her dad met the officers last summer during a Black Lives Matter protest. Short said they heard a commotion outside and saw the line of officers near a crowd of protestors."She's always telling me she wanted to be a police officer or whatnot, so I asked them if it would be okay if she took a picture with them," he said.She high-fived and smiled with officers.A moment of kindness that left an indelible mark and brought so many people together during a tense time.Back at Leilani's home, Christmas gifts from the officers started flowing, including a barbie car, dinosaurs, a doctor doll, and most coveted, a brand new bicycle and scooter."We got a lot of stuff!!" SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- California's energy operator have issued a statewide Flex Alert ahead of anticipated high temperatures this coming weekend.The California Independent System Operator (ISO) is calling for voluntary electricity conservation, from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 14."With high temperatures in the forecast, the power grid operator is predicting an increase in electricity demand, primarily from residential air conditioning use," the ISO said in a statement.In San Diego, an Excessive Heat Warning will be in effect from noon Friday until 8pm Monday from the inland areas to the deserts. The heat will peak on Friday and Saturday with temperatures ranging 5 to 15 degrees above normal.The above-normal temperatures and humidity will stick around through most of next week."Consumers are urged to conserve electricity, especially during the late afternoon and early evening, when the grid is most stressed due to higher demand and solar energy production falling. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Applications are now being accepted for the CONNECT ALL @ the Jacobs Center Business Accelerator Program (CAJC).CAJC is the region's first low-to-moderate income and diversity-focused business accelerator program.The first CAJC group of 13 local startups included businesses in retail, technology, food, and health and beauty. The founders come from various ethnic backgrounds, including African-American, Asian, Caucasian, Hispanic, and Pacific Islander.Entrepreneurs receive six months of free workspace, mentorship, and workshops - learning skills like how to access capital. Kelly Twichel is one of 13 entrepreneurs in CONNECT ALL's first cohort. Her woman-owned company Access Trax was born in a college classroom. "It's important because you want to level the playing field. Anybody has and can come up with a great idea."Twichel and the rest of the first CONNECT ALL cohort will finish their program in October. "Not having to give up equity in my company meant a lot to me because I wanted to grow this as organically as possible and really maintain control. We are a woman-owned small business, and I wanted to do everything I could to continue to foster that."She's now in the running for the Amber Grant for Women Entrepreneurs contest; if awarded, Twichel's company would receive ,000. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Crews quickly put out a brush fire that erupted near Interstate 15 in the Rainbow area of north San Diego County.The fire was reported in an area off I-15, near Old Hwy 395 and Rainbow Valley Boulevard, just after 1:30 p.m. Monday, according to the California Highway Patrol.According to Cal Fire San Diego, the fire burned at least one acre with a moderate rate of spread. By 2:15 p.m., crews were able to douse the blaze before it spread any further.The cause of the fire is under investigation. 525
