GUNNISON, Colo. – Linda Williams finds something beautiful in being disconnected.“We have not hooked up to the internet since we lived here," said Williams. "We’ve been here 30 years or so."She prefers connecting with the keys of her piano in her Gunnison, Colorado, home.The pandemic has forced her to connect with her students through the keys on her computer keyboard.“I love children. I love being around children," Williams said.A school district-issued internet hot-spot lets her teach virtually, but she wants the real thing.“We’re hoping for brick and mortar, as they say, because that’s the best way for learning," Williams said.Williams is a preschool special education teacher in the Gunnison Watershed School District, a rural school corporation with around 2,000 students.Geographically, the district reach is the second largest in Colorado."We are about the size of Rhode Island and Delaware combined," said Superintendent Leslie Nichols."The spread-out nature of our staff and our families have really brought internet access to the forefront of one of our biggest challenges," Dr. Nichols said.Dr. Nichols says most of the district is outside broadband and cellphone range. In the most rural parts, satellite internet is the only option.“It’s barely better than dial up," said Dr. Nichols.She says about 200 students have that problem.“It’s not like half my district is unable to access the internet, but those kids matter," Dr. Nichols said.The school year here will start in classrooms, but learning could go virtual.“All of those plans require good access to the internet," said Dr. Nichols.Last year, the district gave out close to 100 hotspots to students and staff dealing with connectivity issues at home. The hotspots run off cellphone service."I don't feel like it's the high school experience everyone else gets," said Gunnison High School Sophomore Nicholas Ferraro.Ferraro used a hot spot last school year when the pandemic forced learning online because his internet at home isn’t strong enough.“I’m not sure what the future is like, like if I'm going to go to school for the whole year next year," he said.Nationwide, a million school-aged children live in areas with limited access to the internet.“This country, in the 20th century, we electrified America and we got phone service to everyone in America. It’s past time that mentality with internet service it needs to happen," said Dr. Nichols.For those preparing to return to school, like teacher Linda Williams, the focus is on the connection in the classroom.“Learning and teaching is all about relationships that’s the foundation of it all. Having a full kitchen of healthy foods is becoming a luxury. Food pantries across the country are still seeing a dramatic increase in need.“I hope that we eventually get this thing under control, so we can wean everyone off the need for food pantries and shelters like ours, because this is not sustainable,” said Kim Guadagno, CEO of Fulfill, a New Jersey food bank.Guadagno says her organization has seen an increase in demand of almost 2.5 million meals compared to this time last year.Feeding America says at the peak in April, there was a 70% increase in demand, and it’s sustained around 60% higher.Many food banks say they're seeing many families for the first time.“You can always tell someone who has never been to a food pantry before. They come literally right up to this building in tears, because they’ve never had to ask for help before and it’s crushing to all of us,” said Guadagno.Feeding America expects that increased need will continue during the holidays, which is an important time for food banks.“We see increased awareness around hunger and food insecurity around the holidays. It’s a great time for food banks to fundraise. A lot of that fundraising helps sustain them throughout the year,” said Zuani Villarreal, Director of Communications at Feeding America.Food banks are having to purchase more product because of supply chain disruptions.They say right now, cash donations are critical for that and to purchase new supplies like PPE. 1471

HBO announced Wednesday its new streaming service, which launched earlier this year, will be carried on Roku and PlayStation 5.HBO says that the app is now available on the PlayStation 5. Roku users should be able to find the app starting tomorrow.HBO Max is one of many new streaming platforms that have launched in recent years in the wake of Netflix’s massive success. HAMPTON, Va. — Students and teachers across Hampton Roads are preparing to start the school year virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic. That means empty classrooms for a lot of teachers in the area, including Kecoughtan High School."Now it's a little bit different because you're looking around and going, 'Hey, they're not going to be filled,'" said Mark Mingee, a history and government teacher at the school and a 20-year teaching veteran. "I'm going to be looking at a screen to see their faces, as opposed to seeing them right in front of me."But Mingee is making his classroom a little fuller. He created a fundraiser where people can donate to a scholarship fund and have their picture shown on a desk.Mingee, an avid sports fan, said he got the idea after seeing several leagues around the world fill empty stands with cardboard cutouts."You started to see these images on screens various places, or in the transition of cardboard cutouts of people in the stands," he said. "The more I thought about it, the more I thought, 'Hey, if I'm going to be in my classroom, and I want there to be people around me, the best thing to do is try to emulate that in some way.'"So far, he said many friends, alumni and current students have taken part."We're used to, as teachers, having each one of those seats filled. So, as it appears those seats are filled, it makes you feel like a normal, everyday moment in class," Mingee said. George Floyd, the man who died in the custody of the Minneapolis Police Department in late May and whose death has sparked a nationwide protest movement against police brutality, was buried in Pearland, Texas, Tuesday following a private funeral.The funeral took place at The Fountain of Praise Church in Houston. As they restrained him, bystander video shows one police officer, Derek Chauvin, kneeling on Floyd's neck for more than eight minutes as Floyd yelled he couldn't breathe. Chauvin continued to kneel on Floyd's neck for several minutes, even after he became unresponsive.The bystander video quickly went viral, prompting a wave of outrage.
