SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Laurel Street Bridge at Balboa Park was closed late Friday after a fire started inside the bridge. At around 7:30 p.m., Park Rangers called the San Diego Fire Department after seeing smoke coming out of the side of the 105-year-old bridge. The closure caused great inconvenience for Old Globe Theater patrons trying to get to and out of Friday night's show. Season ticket holders Kenny Ard and Brian Moore barely made it to the theater, before the bridge was closed off by emergency responders. Witnesses saw firefighters carefully try to suppress the flames by opening the manholes on the road.“We kind of rushed when we saw the fire truck," Moore said. “I was like, I bet they’re going to close the bridge. So we hurried and made sure we got here.“San Diego Fire Fighters said the fire broke out inside of the hollow bridge. They have not announced the cause of the flames. However, this scene was all too familiar. Since its construction in 1914, the Laurel Street Bridge has caught fire several times. Many of the fires were started by transients who end up living inside the bridge. In 2017, several homeless people were rescued from inside a utility hole on the bridge.“There are access panels at the base and some on the sides, and so people get in there,” Moore said. While Are and Moore were able to avoid the jam getting to the show, they were not so lucky finding their way home.“My car is parked right on the other side of the bridge,” And said. “We’re going to have to take a Lyft because it’s a long way around.”The bridge had reopened by Saturday morning. 1601

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The California Highway Patrol said a person arrested at gunpoint on Interstate 15 in San Diego Thursday was suspected of driving illegally in the HOV lane and leading an officer on a pursuit.The chase happened on southbound I-15 just south of Aero Dr. at 5:30 p.m.Officers said the driver was in the high-occupancy vehicle lane and failed to pull over, leading to the brief pursuit.There are no reports of any injuries or a reason why the driver did not yield for the traffic stop.10News is monitoring developments in the story. 555

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The 10News team is celebrating the return of morning reporter Marie Coronel."I'm so glad to be back here with you guys," she told the morning 10News team in an emotional appearance in the studio Wednesday.About three and half years ago, Marie and 10News photographer Mike Gold were in Mira Mesa preparing for a live report on storm damage when heavy branches snapped off a massive eucalyptus tree crushing the both of them. Mike was able to recover from his injuries and was back to work a few months later, but it's taken years for Marie to recover from multiple injuries and return to the newsroom."This has been a crazy long journey...it's been so tough emotionally, physically, and me going through physical therapy, then doing all of this while raising our three little boys," she said.During her recovery, the native San Diegan stayed active and connected in the community through social media. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The group of individuals assigned with making a recommendation on the appropriateness of the Aztec mascot will not be named, according to San Diego State University officials.SDSU Sally Roush says intends to make decision about the mascot no later than May 31 after a recommendation made by the ‘Aztec task force’ April 30.RELATED: Should SDSU get rid of it's Aztec Warrior mascot?The task force includes five students, five staff members, five members of the community and two at-large appointees.SDSU said earlier in February they would name those on the task force, then later decided to keep their identities private.Some students question why a public university funded by taxpayers is hiding those responsible for a major decision.RELATED: SDSU Senate passes resolution to retire Aztec Warrior mascot “If we’re going to come to real solution, we need to know who is on that task force,” said SDSU Senior Brandon Jones, “it’s going go a long way in identifying the legitimacy of this task force.”SDSU defended their decision in a statement:"Until the conclusion of their work, names of this task force will be withheld in an effort to allow them the opportunity to deliberate, research and present their final recommendations without disruption." 1288

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The California Appeals Court put a stay on the release of a sexually violent predator known as "Bolder than Most" rapist. Back in June 2019, a San Diego County Superior Court judge ruled in favor of conditional release for a sexually violent predator. Judge David M. Gill made the controversial decision for Alvin Ray Quarles, 56.Mary Taylor is a survivor and says she's hopeful with the appeals court stepping in, "we've been hopeful in the past, but this is actually a court saying wait a minute lets look at this." Up until this week, things were moving forward as the search for a place to release Quarles in San Diego County continued. Monday afternoon, Taylor got a call from the deputy district attorney saying they filed for a writ and it had been approved. A writ is similar to an appeal. The California Appeals Court issued a stay. Now, all progress towards finding Quarles a location has stopped and cannot continue again until the courts resolve the appeal. In the meantime, Quarles will stay at the Coalinga State Hospital getting treatment through a program for sexually violent predators. 1131
