Two people are dead after a police chase ended in a crash in Cleveland Tuesday morning.A car being chased by Shaker Heights (Ohio) police crashed into a tree at East 151st and Harvard Avenue around 2:20 a.m., according to police.Cleveland police said they believed the car was being chased because it was stolen.This man was walking home and saw part of the chase. VERO BEACH, Fla. — It was around 9 in the morning, on Aug. 21 that Vero Beach police first became aware of Frank Cook."This guy parked his car in the middle of the road and took off running," one 911 caller said.Five more 911 callers would follow."Says his truck is out of gas, and his wife and kids are in danger at a school around the corner here," another caller said. "He's on something. He looks like he is about to die."Then, Cook ran into a Community Church and pre-school. "Community Pre-School here in Vero Beach. He's in the hallway in our main lobby. He's not well, he's not well," a caller said. "He's barefoot, he's delusional. He said there were people after him this morning. I'm not sure his children were actually here. He keeps grabbing at something in the back of his waist belt," another caller said.His children weren't there. When police caught up with Cook, after he ran a mile or two from the pre-school, Cook told them he had taken cocaine and an unknown substance.He asked them to check on his wife and children, screaming profanities, and telling officers, "If we don't go now, the samurai ninjas are going to kill my family."When told his children were OK, Cook responded, "What about my wife! She's probably been abducted."Incident reports show a witness at the pre-school noticed Frank Cook "was armed when he was inside the building yelling and causing a disturbance inside the hallway of the church building."The witness "stated that he could hear the subject yelling inside the building that "I am not here to shoot anyone" and shouting for his kids.  A receptionist added that Cook "kept trying to get into some of the classrooms," so "she had all the teachers in the nearby classrooms lock-down and asked the rest of the classrooms to do the same."Police did find a loaded gun with "one round in the chamber" in Cook's waistband, although reports say Cook "never displayed a firearm nor made any threats to hurt anyone."Pre-school loophole"You had this gentleman walking in with a gun. It was very unsafe for everyone, and it was legal for him to do that,"  Florida State Sen. Lori Berman said. She's right.Following the incident, Cook was only charged with resisting arrest because had a concealed carry license.The State Attorney's Office says under Florida law they couldn't consider gun charges because Cook can carry his gun into a pre-school.The concealed carry statute prevents a licensed owner from carrying into a secondary or elementary school. Pre-schools do not apply to the law. "Why is there a division between the younger children?" Berman said. "Especially after Parkland, we're all on heightened alert when anytime somebody goes into a school who doesn't belong there." Six years ago, Berman tried to make it illegal to bring a gun into any child care facility. The bill died.Berman says she's going to "look into the possibility of filing legislation to close the loopholes that currently exist."But Eric Friday, the general counsel for the Florida Carry Organization, doesn't think it's that simple. "There's nothing you can write into a new law that would have changed anything here or is going to prevent the next criminal," Friday said.Friday says there should be fewer gun-free zones."There's no reason why a person who is licensed to carry a concealed firearm is safe on the sidewalk outside of a school but suddenly a danger because they cross an imaginary boundary," Friday said.Berman disagrees. "It's something I'm going to continue to advocate for because I think it's crazy we have that distinction right now in our statutes. We don't want to send the message for people, yes it's legal for you to walk into a pre-school with a gun," Berman said.Currently, Frank Cook is legally barred from owning, possessing or purchasing a gun or ammo over the next 18 months. That's because he's on drug probation. Cook was arrested for possession of cocaine in June 2018.Also, while in a hospital emergency room, police said they saw Cook going through "drastic mood swings of anger, to sadness, and then to being calm as if coming down off narcotics."According to police records, Cook told them he "used cocaine every day for the past three years," "believed his house was "wiretapped" and that "helicopters flying to spy on him."Doctors decided to hold him, and police completed a risk protection order because "of multiple firearms at the residence." In early October, an Indian River County judge approved the risk protection order, barring Cook from owning, possessing, or purchasing a gun/ammo for the next 12 months. Cook had to hand over his concealed carry weapons permit as well. 4870

Uncle Ben's rice promised Wednesday to make changes to its brand image, hours after Aunt Jemima pancake mix and syrup promised to change its name and logo.Mars, the parent company of Uncle Ben's, did not say how it would make changes to the brand's name or logo but promised to "evolve the Uncle Ben's brand, including its visual brand identity," according to a statement on its website."We don’t yet know what the exact changes or timing will be, but we are evaluating all possibilities," the statement read. "Racism has no place in society. We stand in solidarity with the Black community, our Associates and our partners in the fight for social justice. We know to make the systemic change needed, it’s going to take a collective effort from all of us – individuals, communities and organizations of all sizes around the world."According to Uncle Ben's website, the name "Uncle Ben" refers to a "legendary Texan farmer, Uncle Ben who was known for his exceptionally high-quality rice." Frank Brown, a maitre d' at a Chicago restaurant, posed for "Uncle Ben's" portrait, which has since served as the brand's logo.Critics say the brand harkens back to slavery and Jim Crow-era South, where older black slaves and servants were frequently referred to as "Aunt" or "Uncle."On Wednesday, Aunt Jemima said it would remove it's logo — which has origins in minstrel show tropes — from packaging beginning in the fourth quarter of 2020 and would eventually rename the brand.The changes come as American institutions hold conversations about systemic racism amid weeks-long, largely peaceful protests in dozens of cities across the country. PST, 3/8/19)The San Diego County District Attorney’s Office reported on March 8, 2019 that Dr. Robert Stephens, an anesthesiologist accused of sexually assaulting patients, will not face charges related to this case.Stephens asserted his innocence in a Team 10 Investigative Report published on February 22, 2019. Read more about the case in the Team 10 report below. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local doctor is accused of sexually assaulting patients who were under anesthesia. In an exclusive interview, 10News investigative reporter Jennifer Kastner spoke to a former patient who says he was abused. She also sat down with the accused doctor for an interview. The doctor was cleared to return to work and denies any abuse.Edward Braun of Alpine is the former patient. He says he found out when Scripps Mercy Hospital in Hillcrest called him and said that a nurse had reported the allegations. “I’m sad. I can't believe somebody would do this,” Braun tells 10News. Braun details the day he got the life-changing call from Scripps Mercy, notifying him that he may have been sexually assaulted by his anesthesiologist, Dr. Robert Stephens, while Braun was under anesthesia for surgery. “I was stunned. I was shaking,” he adds. “What I was accused of never happened,” Dr. Stephens tells 10News. He says he doesn't even remember Braun's surgery. “Given that I've done 5,000 plus surgeries, only the remarkable ones stand out and that entire day was thoroughly unremarkable,” he adds. However, it doesn't end with that day and that patient. The allegations are from 2017 and are detailed in a report published by the California Department of Public Health. In the report, three nurses came forward, and mentioned multiple patients. One nurse claimed to have witnessed the anesthesiologist's hand "underneath the sheets on four other occasions" when patients were "under general anesthesia". The report reveals that the nurse who allegedly witnessed Braun's assault claimed that the doctor's hand was under Braun's blanket, by Braun's groin. “She tried to pull the blanket off and he pulled it back and then she yanked it off and saw what he was doing,” says Braun. “I was still under anesthesia, unconscious when it happened,” he adds. “I have never been inappropriate with any of my patients, nor would I ever be,” says Dr. Stephens. We ask, “Why would three nurses falsely accuse you of something so egregious?” “It's speculation and I don't want to speculate. I don't see any benefit of me speculating in that respect,” he responds. According to the state report, the doctor said he sometimes may have had his hand "under the drapes" to "check EKG leads" and "monitor leads". In the report, it appears the nurses were the ones who got in trouble for not immediately and appropriately reporting what they allegedly witnessed. However, there's no mention of any corrective action for the doctor. “[The nurses] report something and they get reprimanded for it? That's not right,” Braun tells us. The hospital sent 10News the following statement: “Patient safety is a top priority at Scripps. While we are unable to comment on pending litigation, we can share that following allegations of improper conduct, the Medical Staffs of Scripps Mercy Hospital, Scripps Green Hospital and Scripps Memorial Hospital, Encinitas suspended Robert Stephens, M.D., and initiated a hearing before an arbitrator. After five full-day evidentiary sessions, the arbitrator found that, while the initial action was reasonable, the suspension was no longer reasonable and Dr. Stephens should be permitted to return to work. Subsequently, the parties reached a confidential agreement. After the agreement was reached, Dr. Stephens voluntarily resigned his Scripps Medical staff memberships and all clinical privileges.” Dr. Stephens says the arbitrator reviewed all the records and witness testimony. “[The arbitrator] ruled that not only was their story changing on that side but that their witnesses were not credible [and] their witnesses were not believable [and] I was credible and honest,” he explains.San Diego Police have an active criminal investigation, according to a Deputy District Attorney who's involved in the case. That DA confirmed that prosecutors have fought all the way up to the California Supreme Court to get records from Scripps Mercy Hospital, but have so far been unsuccessful. The DA agreed that his office is putting up a more aggressive fight than what's typical, but he wouldn't comment further about why. “I put my life in this guy's hands to take care of me and he abused his power,” says Braun. Last month, Braun sued Dr. Stephens, Scripps Health and Anesthesia Service Medical Group for assault, battery and negligence, among other complaints. Anesthesia Service Medical Group is Dr. Stephens’ former employer. It sent 10News the following statement: “ASMG was shocked and saddened to learn of the allegations made against Dr. Robert Stephens, a former employee of ASMG. From the moment ASMG learned of these allegations, Dr. Stephens has not provided care to any ASMG patients. Dr. Stephens was hired after very extensive background and credentialing checks, and up until the time these accusations were made, there was nothing to indicate that Dr. Stephens might present a risk to patients. ASMG is committed to hiring only those physicians who will provide the highest level of patient care, and will aggressively defend itself against any claim that it negligently hired or negligently employed Dr. Stephens.” “The initial allegations are very catchy and they do pack a punch but they aren't the truth,” says Stephens. The other patients who may have been affected don't know it. According to the state report, they couldn't be identified. VENICE, Florida — Six dolphins were found dead on beaches in Sarasota County in the past 24 hours."The fact that it's starting to impact our dolphins makes us even more nervous about what's to come," said Rebeccah Hazelkorn, senior biologist at Mote Marine. Venice Police Marine Patrol found two deceased dolphins on Tuesday, another two on Wednesday around 8 a.m. and then two more around 2:30 p.m. "Dolphins are much faster-moving animals. They have been able to detect it and swim out of it. Turtles are actually pretty good at detecting red tide and avoiding it. It's just where the animals are going and how bad the bloom is and how fast it gets into their system," said Hazelkorn. Mote Marine Aquarium's Stranding Investigations Program says it recovered those dolphins. Those deceased dolphins were discovered in several locations in Sarasota County including one found in the Intracoastal Waterway near Snake Island in Venice and another located on Caspersen Beach.We spoke with neighbors who found two of the dolphins stranded on Casey Key in Nokomis. "Its fin was up. I didn't know whether or not it was a shark or even a small whale. As I got closer, I realized it was a dolphin," said resident Jeanne May.The aquarium says three of the dolphins are males, the other three are females.Mote staff will conduct necropsies on the animals in Sarasota to investigate what happened to them. They were all reportedly found moderately to severely decomposed, which makes it difficult to examine and collect samples for analysis.Mote did not say whether or not red tide played a role in their deaths, but it has been impacting marine life on the Florida Gulf Coast this summer. 1757
