In April 2017, scientists used a global network of telescopes to see and capture the first-ever picture of a black hole, according to an announcement by researchers at the National Science Foundation Wednesday morning. They captured an image of the black hole at the center of a galaxy known as M87."We have seen what we thought was unseeable," said Sheperd Doeleman, director of the Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration. "We have seen and taken a picture of a black hole."The Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration, called EHT, is a global network of telescopes that captured the first-ever photograph of a black hole.In their attempt to capture an image of a black hole, scientists combined the power of eight radio telescopes around the world using Very-Long-Baseline-Interferometry, according to the European Southern Observatory, which is part of the EHT. This effectively creates a virtual telescope around the same size as the Earth itself. What is a black hole?Black holes are made up of huge amounts of matter squeezed into a small area, according to 1071
It wasn't easy, and at times there was doubt, but defending champion the US can look ahead to a mouthwatering quarterfinal clash against host France after a 2-1 win over a resolute Spain. In the US' toughest challenge at the Women's World Cup so far, two Megan Rapinoe penalties, one in each half, secured progress to the last eight. When Spain conceded a fifth-minute penalty -- Maria Leon bringing down Tobin Heath in the box -- it seemed as if the US would go on to accrue another healthy scoreline, just as it did in the group stages.Jill Ellis' team had qualified for the last 16 having scored 18 goals in three games and not conceded, becoming the first team in World Cup history to qualify for the knockout stages with a +18 goal difference. But before this tournament questions were being asked of the US' defense and for the first time in France it was put through its paces and breached. In trying to play out from defense, Becky Sauerbrunn lost possession on the edge of her box and Spain pounced with a delightful finish from Jennifer Hermoso. The defending champion created more chances -- Rapinoe twice missed opportunities to give her team the lead -- but so too did Spain, catching out the Americans' high defensive line on a couple of occasions. After the break, Spain's ploy of slowing the pace of the game by keeping possession was successful in frustrating the tournament favorite until Leon took a swipe at Rose Lavelle's shin and the referee pointed at the spot.Though it was the slightest of contacts, a VAR check rubber stamped the decision and Rapinoe coolly slotted home.More to follow.The-CNN-Wire? & ? 2019 Cable News Network, Inc., a Time Warner Company. Just when stores started filling their toilet paper shelves again, other items are suddenly in short supply. Most of them have nothing to do with cleaning. You'll recall that first it was hand sanitizer and Lysol wipes that became impossible to find back in February — which feels like it was three years ago in the time-dilated Twilight Zone of 2020.March arrived with face mask and toilet paper shortages, and cleaning sprays and products disappeared from store shelves.April brought the first shortages of beef, chicken and pork as processing plants shut down.As those items get restocked, other wells are running dry.Newer items that are getting hard to findBike shops across the country have been so busy during the pandemic that it's almost 758
KENSINGTON, N.H. – A father in New Hampshire killed a coyote with his bare hands after it attacked his young child on a trail Monday, according to the Kensington Police Department. Before that attack, police say they received a report of the coyote attacking a vehicle on Drinkwater Road in Hampton Falls at about 8:40 a.m. Shortly after, police say a 62-year-old woman on Hemlock Road reported that she and her dogs were attacked by a coyote.“The coyote was on her three-season porch and her two dogs had opened the sliding door and were attacked by the coyote,” wrote the department. “The two dogs retreated back into the house and the coyote attempted to get into the house. While the homeowner was fighting to keep the coyote out of the house, she was bitten.”The homeowner was treated at an area hospital and received the first series of rabies shots. She will return later in the week for a second set of shots. Her dogs were also treated. Then at about 11 a.m., police say that same coyote attacked a family walking on a trail in Exeter.
