Fast food sandwich chain Subway expects to close about 500 stores in North America this year.But it's also hoping to open as many as 1,000 stores overseas.The company has 44,000 locations globally -- more than any other retailer. It had a net loss of more than 350 US stores in 2016, the first year in the company's history that it trimmed rather than increased its number of stores. The privately held company has yet to disclose its 2017 store count, but there were reports of hundreds of store closings."Looking out over the next decade, we anticipate having a slightly smaller, but more profitable footprint in North America and a significantly larger footprint in the rest of the world," the company said on Wednesday.Many of Subway's locations are smaller compared to other fast food rivals. That's one of the reasons there are so many of them -- it's much less expensive for a franchisee to open a Subway storefront rather than one for McDonald's or Burger King.Many traditional brick-and-mortar stores have been closing locations in recent years, as people buy more goods online. But that hasn't been the case for fast food, where there is virtually no competition from online competitors.Fast food sales on the other hand are getting hit by the drop in retail foot traffic in the places like malls, as well as the growing demand for healthier food.Subway also took a public relations hit in 2015 when Subway spokesman Jared Fogle pleaded guilty to charges of child pornography and crossing state lines to pay for sex with minors. Galfy was found beaten to death in his bedroom, wearing only his socks and underwear.Several days after Galfy's death, an employee at a Starbucks in Philadelphia recognized McGillvary, and he was arrested at a bus station.A few months before meeting Galfy, McGillvary gained a measure of fame after intervening in an attack on a California utility worker.In a TV interview viewed millions of times online, he described using a hatchet he was carrying to repeatedly hit a man who had struck the worker with his car, and also fend off a further attack on two women. 1321

(KGTV) — Growing up in foster care can be lonely enough and the holidays and the pandemic can make life feel even more isolating.Shatayja Beck knows that feeling all too well."I didn't know where I was going to go. I thought I was going to be there forever, and then finally somebody told me about SPA, and it just sounded like the best place, really I was like sign me up," said Beck.SPA is the San Pasqual Academy in Escondido. Roughly seventy kids live, study, play sports, and grow up on the sprawling campus."San Pasqual Academy is a first in the nation residential, educational setting for children in foster care, and it has been for ages 12 and up," said Kimberly Giardina, Director of Child Welfare Services for the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency.Shatayja's mom died suddenly when she was just eight years old. She was in and out of the Polinsky Childrens Center and foster homes before finding stability at SPA."SPA was the best thing for me because I was older and nobody really wanted to take me in, and I wasn't going back with my family," said Shatayja.Shatayja lived in the honor's house and played just about every sport offered. She graduated from SPA in 2017."When I was younger, I didn't even think I was really going to make it to college, I was like high school and, that's it," said Shatayja.Not only did she graduate high school, but she says she also had several college scholarship options. Currently, she's a student at Grossmont College. Her passion is photography and she works as a security guard."When I went to SPA, I felt like I could be myself, and I found out who I really was, how I wanted to dress. and how I wanted to be," said Shatayja.Perhaps, just as frightening as entering the foster system is leaving it."There is the experience of, 'good luck, you've turned 18.' The system is no longer responsible. We hope that you learn everything that you've needed to to make this transition successful," said Simone Hidds-Monroe.Hidds-Monroe knows that feeling all too well. She graduated from SPA in 2009. She and her three siblings entered foster care after their mom died. They stayed together, and all graduated from the academy."There is such a relief when you meet another former foster youth. It's like this unspoken connection that you really understand," said Hidds-Monroe, who is now the associate director of youth services for Just in Time for Foster Youth.The organization serves more than 800 youth a year, ages 18-26. The goal is to help them succeed once they age out of the foster care system. "The biggest thing for us is connections. We want our youth to know there is a community here to support them, for every goal and every opportunity they want to have, we're cheering for them," said Hidds-Monroe.Making those connections can be more challenging during the pandemic.The group recently held two holiday drive-thru events, where youth picked up gifts, food, school supplies, or home furnishings."We're really asking the community to step forward and help us bring the holiday joy and some gifts and love to our youth at this time," said Hidds-Monroe.Giardina says when the pandemic first hit, the county saw a decrease in people willing to become foster parents, but offering virtual training and education has made it easier for people to help."The pandemic has taken a toll on all of us, and kids in foster care have already come from traumatic experiences and already have had a difficult time," said Giardina.Hidds-Monroe says she's dedicated to making sure the youth succeed."I'm an ally for my peers, and I am very passionate for my youth in foster care to make sure they have a positive experience. Everyone has a childhood memory of visiting Santa Claus and reading off their wishlist of toys they hope to find under the tree come Christmas morning.“There's nothing better than leaning down and getting that hug from the 5-year-old that comes running, so we’re gonna miss that,” Santa KJ Braithwaite said.Holiday cheer may look a little different this year. Santa’s helpers are going virtual in order to protect kids and Santa Claus. Due to COVID-19 and social distancing guidelines, home visits, hugs, and photos on Santa’s lap might be nonexistent.Santa KJ and his wife Carol Sherman already had COVID-19 once.“We caught it in July and got it together,” he explained. “It gives you a different perspective on what the year’s going to be like, and children need to be protected. We need to be protected.”Which begs the question: how will Santa spread holiday cheer from a distance? It will take a little more lights, camera, and action.That’s where Susen Mesco, founder of the Professional Santa Claus School, comes in. Along with a long list of helpers, over 100 of them, she’s been putting together a project to keep the holiday cheer alive this winter.“We’ve been filming and working on it since mid-April,” Mesco said. “We’ve put a lot into this.”Mesco has been training Santa Claus and his team since the 1980s. She was recently inducted into the International Santa Claus Hall of Fame. But this was something new.“We’ve really poured our hearts into this, and we’re so proud of what we’ve come up with,” she said.Mesco isn’t letting the Grinch steal Christmas this year, so they're working around the clock to build a website filled with hours of videos and family fun.“Learning and singing and sharing and doing crafts and making cookies and learning hot cocoa recipes and seeing Santa's fire engine,” Mesco said. The list goes on. “The trend in the industry has gone to the virtual side," she said.But the cost of Christmas cheer wasn’t free for Mesco.“We realized it was going to be enormously expensive to put together something of the magnitude of what we wanted to give the children, a four-layered program,” she said. “So, I did mortgage my house, and I do believe in the people I'm working with, and I really believe in this product.” A product filled with Santa’s stories, singalongs, activities, and virtual live visits.“My day usually begins around 6 a.m. and ends around 4 a.m. We are doing editing and polishing and the final touches,” she said. It's all set to launch at the beginning of November.“Santa is safe and he's been in quarantine at the North Pole, so the children can be absolutely sure that on Christmas Eve if they are in bed sleeping, that Santa will come to their house,” Mesco said. 2729
