Hurricane Lane weakened as it marched toward Hawaii, but it's list of life-threatening calamities is still going strong. The hurricane was downgraded to a Category 3 storm Thursday, even as it unleashed torrential rainfall, flooding and landslides over parts of Hawaii's Big Island, along with dangerous surf and high winds. The conditions continued early Friday.Lane is forecast to bring even more damage as its center gets closer Friday and Saturday. While it's unclear whether the islands will get a direct hit, the hurricane will bring "significant and life-threatening flash flooding and landslides," the National Weather Service said. The center of the hurricane "will move over, or dangerously close" to parts of Hawaii islands Friday, the Central Pacific Hurricane Center said. It was about 230 miles (370 km) south of Honolulu early Friday, and could become the first major cyclone to make landfall in the state in 26 years.Track the storm here"Some weakening is forecast during the next 48 hours, but Lane is expected to remain a hurricane as it approaches the islands," the center said.Hawaii Islands include Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Maui, and the island of Hawaii, which is often referred to as the Big Island. 1232

HOUSTON (AP) — A federal judge has rejected a last-ditch Republican effort to invalidate nearly 127,000 votes in Houston. U.S. District Judge Andrew Hanen’s ruling Monday concerned ballots cast at drive-thru polling centers that were established during the pandemic. The judge's decision to hear arguments on the brink of Election Day drew concern from voting rights activists, and came after the Texas Supreme Court rejected a nearly identical challenge over the weekend. The lawsuit was brought by conservative Texas activists who have railed against expanded voting access in Harris County. Hanen said the opponents to drive-thru centers — who were represented by former Harris County GOP Chairman Jared Woodfill— had no standing to bring a lawsuit. He added that people had already voted and that conservative activists had months to bring a challenge sooner. But Hanen still expressed doubts about whether Texas law allowed anyone to vote from their car, even in a pandemic.“If I were voting tomorrow, I would not vote in a drive-thru just out of my concern as to whether that’s legal or not,” Hanen said.Another 20,000 or more voters were expected to use drive-thru polling locations Tuesday, said Harris County Clerk Chris Hollins, the county’s top elections official. Several voters who already used the drive-thru centers rushed to join mounting opposition to the lawsuit, including a Houston attorney whose wife was 35 weeks pregnant when she cast her ballot. She gave birth to twins Friday. The county is the nation’s third largest and a crucial battleground in Texas, where President Donald Trump and Republicans are bracing for the closest election in decades on Tuesday. 1689

HOUSTON — Houston Texans star defensive end J.J. Watt provided a one-year update on the funds donated to victims of Hurricane Harvey, and the numbers are astounding.Hurricane Harvey, which struck Houston on the morning of Aug. 26, 2017, quickly became the most deadly and costly hurricane in American history after inflicting nearly 0 billion in damages and taking an estimated 88 lives. During one of Houston's worst disasters, Watt was a shining light. He raised .6 million for victims affected by Hurricane Harvey, far surpassing his initial goal of 0,000. 591

Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson detailed his wife's involvement Tuesday in picking out a dining room set for his office, telling a House subcommittee, "I left it with my wife."Carson said that his wife, Candy, selected "a style and a color" of the furniture set that ultimately cost HUD ,000."A style and a color was selected by her with the caveat that we were not happy with the pricing and they needed to find something," Carson told lawmakers. He went on to defend her, "If anybody knew my wife, they would realize how ridiculous this was. She's the most frugal person in the world."A HUD spokesperson had previously told CNN in a statement last month that "Mrs. Carson and the secretary had no awareness that the table was being purchased." Internal HUD emails indicated that the Carsons had picked out the furniture.Carson said Tuesday the issue of replacing the dining room set was raised "because people were being stuck by nails, the chairs collapsed with somebody sitting in it, it's 50 years old.""I said, 'OK, we can potentially do that.' I asked my wife also to help me with that," he told lawmakers."They showed us some catalogs. The prices were beyond what I wanted to pay. I made it clear that just didn't seem right to me. And, you know, I left it with my wife," he said.Carson argued that he wasn't concerned about the furniture because he had more important issues to handle as HUD secretary.Carson said he first heard of the ,000 price tag after it was reported and "immediately" canceled the order from the interior design firm Sebree and Associates in Baltimore, Maryland. He testified that the money spent on the dining set was returned to the US Treasury."I'm not really big into decorating. If it was up to me, my office would probably look like hospital waiting room," quipped Carson, who previously worked as a neurosurgeon. He said his wife is not involved in any other decisions regarding the purchasing of furniture for HUD.Carson was also asked about inconsistencies in the messaging from the agency regarding how involved he and his wife were in the process to purchase the dining set compared to what internal HUD emails indicate. The emails were released through a Freedom of Information Act request."There appears to be some contradiction in the record about your statements to the press indicating early on that you had no knowledge of this purchase," Rep. David Price, D-North Carolina, said to Carson.Carson denied he ever spoke directly to the press. When Price pointed to the statement that the HUD spokesman provided to CNN at the time, Carson distanced himself from his spokesman's comments."I would respectfully tell you what I said. I can tell you what I did. I do not intend to be responsible for what anybody else said," Carson said.Carson then said that the content of his statement made via Facebook?where he personally addressed the issue "is quite accurate." 2953

House Democrats are expected to retain a majority of US House seats in 2021, but with a smaller margin. The leader of the House Democrats, Speaker Nancy Pelosi, said on Wednesday the election was “challenging” in a letter to colleagues. As of Wednesday evening, House Republicans have netted five seats by flipping seven Democratic seats. Democrats flipped two previously held Republican seats. All seven of the House Democrats that lost were representatives who only served one term in Congress. The seven freshmen members of Congress ushered in a “Blue Wave” in 2018, which gave Democrats the majority in the House for the first time in eight years. The 2018 Blue Wave also returned Pelosi to the speaker’s chair, where it appears she’ll remain in 2021 and 2022.“Though it was a challenging election, all of our candidates – both Frontline and Red to Blue – made us proud,” Pelosi wrote to colleagues. “Their drumbeat For The People enabled Democrats to Hold The House and flipped critical battleground states, building our margins across the board. Our discipline in building a massive battlefield proved essential in keeping the Majority. Our success enabled us to win in our ‘mobilization, messaging and money,’ forcing Republicans to defend their own territory.”Despite not winning a majority of seats, House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy celebrated Republicans regaining seats in the House.“We expanded this party that reflects America, that looks like America. And thanks,” McCarthy said. “I think the rejection that we saw last night from the Democrats was that America does not want to be a socialist nation. I think the other rejection that we saw, we watched the Democrats promise if they would be given the power to have the majority, that they would act different, that they would solve problems and they wasted their majority.” 1850
