LOS ANGELES (AP) — The touching black-and-white drama "Roma" that follows a domestic worker for a middle-class family in 1970s Mexico City won the Oscar for best foreign language film Sunday.Director Alfonso Cuaron's deeply personal film with dialogue in Spanish and Mixtec gave Mexico its long-sought statuette in the foreign film category.The Netflix-produced film was inspired by Cuaron's own youth. "Roma" won him the best director award and one for best cinematography.The story develops in the midst of the turmoil that rocked Mexico in the early 70s, including the student demonstrations that in 1971 led to a massacre by a group backed by authorities. Society is fraying and the women of the house seem to take the brunt as they try to keep the family of four children afloat.The film beat four other contenders that also told the stories of individuals and families facing tumultuous social and historical times.The other nominated films were Polish filmmaker Pawel Pawlikowski's 20th-century romance "Cold War;" German director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck's artist biopic "Never Look Away;" Japanese filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda's's subtle family story "Shoplifters;" and "Capernaum," a powerful neo-realist drama about a Syrian child refugee from Lebanon's Nadine Labaki.The foreign film statue is not given to a specific individual, but to the nominating country. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Earthquake early warning alerts will become publicly available throughout California this week, the Governor's Office of Emergency Services said Wednesday.The system's statewide debut Thursday will coincide with the 30th anniversary of the Loma Prieta earthquake that ravaged the San Francisco Bay area on Oct. 17, 1989, as well as the annual Great Shakeout safety drill.The warnings produced by the ShakeAlert system will be pushed through a smartphone app called MyShake and the same wireless notification system that issues Amber Alerts.The state earthquake app, developed at the University of California, Berkeley, is available for download to IOS users through iTunes and through GooglePlay stores for Android phones.The system does not predict earthquakes. Rather, it detects the start of an earthquake and calculates location, intensity and sends alerts to areas where shaking is likely to occur from quakes of magnitude 4.5 or greater.The alerts have been in development for years and last year were made broadly available to businesses, utilities, schools and other entities.Large-scale public notification has been available for Los Angeles County since the start of the year through an app developed for the city of Los Angeles, but it hasn't been triggered yet. 1300

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Authorities say Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Montana and his wife confronted a home intruder who attempted to kidnap their grandchild over the weekend in California.According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Montana told deputies that his 9-month-old grandchild was sleeping in a playpen Saturday when an unknown woman entered their home in Malibu and grabbed the child.Montana and his wife, Jennifer, confronted the woman and asked her to give back their grandchild.After a tussle, law enforcement officials say Jennifer Montana pried the baby out of the woman's arms.The sheriff’s office says the woman, whom authorities identified as Sodsai Dalzell, fled the home but was later arrested. She faces kidnapping and burglary charges.In a tweet on Sunday, Montana thanks those who reached out about the incident.“Scary situation, but thankful that everybody is doing well,” he wrote. “We appreciate respect for our privacy at this time.” 978

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Police Department is investigating 56 allegations of misconduct during protests against police brutality in the wake of George Floyd’s death. The LAPD says Wednesday that of the 56 investigations, 28 involve alleged uses of force. While most protests have been peaceful, there were violent clashes with police and businesses were vandalized. Floyd, a black man, died on May 25 after a white Minneapolis police officer pressed his knee on Floyd’s neck for nearly nine minutes while he was handcuffed and lying on the ground. His death prompted protests across the U.S. and around the world against police brutality and racial injustice. 678
