Small businesses employ roughly half of all Americans, but new data is showing many of these businesses are closing permanently.“It’s an excruciatingly hard decision,” said Martha Studstill. “You know small business owners put their heart and soul into their business.”For more than a decade Studstill has owned a small gift shop, Uptown Gifts, in South Carolina.“Until COVID came along we were buzzing,” said Studstill.Originally, in March, the plan for Uptown Gifts was to close temporarily for a few weeks. However, the shop has now been closed for more than three months. She has only been able to list items online, resulting in sales being down by 75%.However, sales aside and more importantly to Studstill, the danger of COVID-19, especially for someone her age, hasn’t subsided.“When we closed on March the 16, I really had no idea we would be where we are at today,” said Studstill.Studstill thought she would be reopening, not only earlier, but to fewer cases of COVID-19.Cases have actually been on the rise in her state. The uptick started most distinctly after reopenings. So, with the financial risk and uncertainty added to Studstill’s health risk of running the shop, she feels closing is her only choice.“I think if I were younger, I would not have made the same decision, but I am where I am at,” she added.Around the country, there is a wave of permanent business closures happening. One report done by Yelp shows more than 143,000 businesses listed on its platform closed between March and June. Now, roughly 35% of those businesses have indicated their closures are permanent. Most of those businesses closing are small businesses.“The numbers that are coming out are really sad,” said Frank Knapp with Small Business for America’s Future.Knapp heads the newly formed organization, pushing for better help for small businesses in Congress’ next stimulus package.“Our proposal for Small Business for America’s Future is that we need to put together grants for the really small businesses to help them get through this recession so that they are healthy on the other side and our economy can get back up and running again,” said Knapp.Saving small businesses could save jobs and be the fastest way to rebound the economy.“Small businesses hire about 50% of all workers in this country,” said Knapp, “We know from the last recession, it was small businesses that got us back on our economic feet again, not big businesses. Small businesses did the hiring right away.”“I think that this could be a defining moment where the general public could see just how important small businesses are to their community,” added Studstill. 2651

ST JOSEPH, Mo. — A couple rushed to save a dog’s life after she was shot and left for dead in the woods.Jacob Carter, his fiance Robin Musser, and a few other family members were out hunting for mushrooms Thursday in the Bluffwoods Conservation Area just south of St. Joseph, Missouri. The group was just finishing up when they heard gunshots."We heard two gunshots, and we were coming on out anyway and stuff, getting ready to pack up and leave,” said Carter.Musser said the gunfire didn’t worry them since it’s common during turkey hunting season. "We'd seen a turkey earlier, thought maybe someone was shooting at the turkey,” she said.As they were driving out of the woods, something caught Musser’s eye."We were coming down the road and I spotted the dog and thought it was a puppy,” said Musser.Carter pulled over to go see if the dog was okay.As he walked closer he noticed it was an adult dog that wasn’t moving, and then he saw blood."That's when I noticed that she was shot, so I took my shirt off and started applying pressure,” said Carter. The white female pitbull had been shot twice, once in the back of the head and once through her ear. 1184

SOLANA BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) - An injured sea lion spotted on a North San Diego County beach prompted lifeguards to place shark warning signs along a stretch of coastline Thursday. The incident was reported about 9:30 a.m. at 2525 South Coast Highway near Tower 11 at Cardiff State Beach, according to California State Parks officials. A jogger reported the sea lion with a missing tail and gash on its back, washed up on the beach.SeaWorld San Diego experts responded to the area but told 10News the sea lion later died due to the severity of its injuries. They confirmed the female sea lion was bitten by a shark.Lifeguards posted aggressive shark advisories for beachgoers from Cardiff Reef in the north to Seaside State Beach in the south, officials said. There was no immediate word on the type of shark involved. The incident Thursday marks the sixth shark sighting over the last several weeks in the waters off San Diego. Shark sightings several days in a row prompted shark advisories in Del Mar in July. A shark sighting in Coronado also forced lifeguards to post signs warning beachgoers about the presence of sharks. A shark advisory means that a shark has been spotted in the water and swimmers should enter at their own risk. Check out the list below for tips on avoiding any possible shark attacks:Avoid the beach at dusk and dawnStay away from river mouthsPay attention to lifeguards and their warnings 1424

Since the pandemic struck at the start of spring, people have been paralyzed with fear. And that fear has stopped many from entering the hospital due to worry about catching the potentially deadly coronavirus. That means heart patients, or other ailments, have gone unchecked but one health crisis that cannot wait is cancer.Aerin Leigh knows COVID-19 can kill, but her fear of dying of cancer is even greater it nearly took her baby girl."We have come so far," Aerin said. "She had leukemia when she was 3. She's 32 now."Medical advances saved her daughter, and Aerin too. Last October, the doctor's discovered cancer had invaded her abdomen."My appendix burst and spilled toxins and cancer into my system and (I) grew a 23-pound tumor," Aerin said. The tumor removal came with a hysterectomy, but the cancer stage 4 had already spread and she needed a second surgery just as the COVID-19 pandemic hit."Even in the scariest of times, like the pandemic, we're in now if they were willing to do my surgery I was going to get it done," Aerin said.Across the country, cancer screenings have been down 80 to 90 percent."Cancer cannot wait," said Dr. Richard Berri. "If we think that we can wait and think that cancer will not progress, or not put our patients in a more difficult position after waiting, then I think we're making a mistake."Dr. Berri is the chief of surgical oncology at Ascension Michigan. He says hospitals are taking all precautions and following CDC guidelines to keep patients safe."I think the hospital is actually one of the safest places to be and when it comes to cancer, the risk of cancer progressing or the risk of cancer being diagnosed at a later stage is far more dangerous than the risk of contracting COVID," Dr. Berri said.Aerin sought treatment at Ascension Michigan because Dr. Berri developed a program to treat advanced cancers of the abdomen like hers. Its called HIPEC, or Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy. In May, Aerin received HIPEC. She was in and out of the hospital in record time – just three days."Is she considered cancer-free? She is," Dr. Berri said. "And I think she continues to do well and we will continue to watch her."Aerin leaves this message: "Take care of yourself because nobody else is going to you are your best advocate."So here's the Rebound Rundown:- Cancer cannot wait, so get screened now- Hospitals are again doing other surgeries and taking all precautions to keep you safeDr. Berri adds that if you're still fearful about coming into the hospital for a cancer screening, they will meet with you virtually. This story was first reported by Carolyn Clifford at WXYZ in Detroit, Michigan. 2667
