SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A construction project at the Edward J. Schwartz Federal Office Building in downtown San Diego will result in a 21-month closure of a portion of Front Street, beginning Saturday.According to the U.S. General Services Administration, a two-block stretch of Front Street, between Broadway and West F Street, will be affected by the construction project, which is expected to last until June 2021. Pedestrian and vehicle traffic will be detoured around the project area.The project will reinforce and enhance the Front Street underpass beneath the Schwartz Federal Building. The project is designed to increase safety for the building's occupants as well as pedestrians and motorists, according to the GSA.The Federal Building's existing framing at the underpass will be reinforced with new steel beams, concrete paneling and column support structures, federal officials said.Signs will be in place on Interstate 5 to alert motorists to the closure as they enter downtown. SAN DIEGO — A leader has emerged in the battle between two democrats to represent California's 53rd District in Congress, according to a scientific poll released Tuesday. Sara Jacobs is leading Georgette Gomez 38 percent to 24 percent in the race, with 38 percent still undecided, an ABC-10News Union-Tribune says. Jacobs, a nonprofit founder who served in Obama's State Department, is leading Gomez among Democrats, Independents and Republicans who say they have made up their minds. Gomez, currently the San Diego City Council president, is leading Jacobs among the youngest voters, those between the ages of 18 to 34. Thad Kousser, a political scientist at UC San Diego, said the poll still shows the race isn't over, despite Jacobs' big lead. SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- A 76-year-old woman who died on May 24 is the first local fatality of e-cigarette or vaping-associated lung injury, the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency announced Thursday.Three vaping-associated lung injuries in young adults were confirmed in recent weeks and are the first reports of the lung illness in San Diego County since 2019.All the newly reported local cases tested negative for the novel coronavirus, which causes COVID-19, and all reported recently vaping products containing THC.The California Department of Public Health recently recognized new reports of confirmed lung-injury cases in persons vaping THC-containing products in April, after no cases had been reported since February.Since July 2019, a total of 52 EVALI cases have been reported in San Diego County residents. All patients had to be hospitalized."While our community is understandably focused on COVID-19, it is important to remember that lung injury from vaping is still a major public health concern," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, county public health officer. "People who vape, especially those using THC-containing products, are urged to stop."In January, the San Diego County Board of Supervisors voted to restrict the sale of flavored smoking products and e-cigarette and vaping devices in the county's unincorporated areas. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 20-year-old man was arrested today on suspicion of attempted murder following a SWAT standoff after a shooting in the City Heights area that sent two people to the hospital, police said.The shooting occurred in the 1800 block of Rowan Street at 9:30 p.m. Friday, according to Lt. Andra Brown of the San Diego Police Department.When officers arrived on scene, they found a 21-year-old man with an apparent gunshot wound to his head, Brown said. The victim directed officers to his companion, who was seated in a nearby car and also appeared to have been shot.The officers provided aid to the victims, who were later taken to a hospital, Brown said. The man who called for help is expected to survive his injuries, but the other victim was not expected to survive.Homicide detectives were called to the scene to investigate. ``While the investigation has just begun, detectives have learned that the two men arrived in San Diego from Central California to meet with a male at 1700 Rowan Street,'' Brown said. ``It is believed the men were meeting to conduct a marijuana transaction.
