SHANGHAI, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Barack Obama arrived in China's economic hub Shanghai on Sunday night, starting a state visit to China.     Air Force One touched down at the Shanghai Pudong International Airport in heavy rain at about 23:10.     This is Obama's first state visit to China since he assumed the presidency in January. He is also the first U.S. president who paid a state visit to China within one year in office.     This year marks the 30th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the People's Republic of China and the United States.     U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Permanent Representative to the United Nations Susan Rice and National Security Advisor James Jones also arrived in Shanghai Sunday night. U.S. President Barack Obama arrives in Shanghai on Nov. 15, 2009 to begin his first state visit to ChinaPresident Obama will meet with local officials on Monday and have a dialogue with Chinese youth, during which he is supposed to answer questions from netizens via Xinhuanet, a news website of the Xinhua News Agency on Monday.     He will leave Shanghai Monday afternoon for Beijing, where he will hold talks with Chinese President Hu Jintao and meet with other Chinese leaders.     Leaders of the two countries are expected to discuss bilateral ties and major international and regional issues of common concern, according to diplomatic sources. TAIPEI, Nov. 8 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese mainland's 20 million yuan of donations to ethnic minorities in the typhoon-hit Taiwan have been "all given out", Kao Chin Su-mei, a representative of the ethnic minorities, said here Sunday.     Earlier in August, the Taiwan Work Office of the Communist Party of China Central Committee announced it has raised 20 million yuan (about 95.4 million new Taiwan dollars) for the ethnic minorities in Taiwan after Typhoon Morakot hit the island.     The donation plan was announced when a delegation headed by Kao Chin Su-mei visited Beijing on August 19.     The donation has been distributed to more than 2,153 homeless ethnic minority families (30,000 new Taiwan dollars for each), more than 3,300 primary and junior high school ethnic minority students in hardest-hit areas (5,000 new Taiwan dollars for each), and nearly 14,00 senior high school and junior college ethnic minority students (10,000 new Taiwan dollars for each), according to Gao Chin Su-mei.     All the donation had been distributed to ethnic minority victims of the typhoon, she said.     Currently, about 500,000 people of ethnic minorities live in Taiwan, 80 percent of whom make a living by growing and processing agricultural products.

COPENHAGEN, Dec. 18 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met here with U.S. President Barack Obama on Friday to discuss climate change.     Wen said climate change is a global challenge and an important field for cooperation between China and the United States.     The key to this issue is to stick to the principle of "common but differentiated responsibilities," said Wen.     The Chinese government has announced its goal of controlling greenhouse gas emissions, which demonstrates China's sincerity and determination to deal with climate change, and work with the international community on this issue, said the Chinese premier. Therefore, China should not be required to adopt the same measures as the United States or other developed countries.     Obama said he appreciated China's willingness to have transparency on its voluntary emission reduction measures. The United States is ready to work with China for a successful Copenhagen climate change conference and to strengthen long-term cooperation in the fight against climate change.

BEIJING, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- Profits of China's state-owned enterprises (SOEs) administered by the central government more than doubled in October from a year ago after months of declines, a senior official said here on Friday.     The 132 central SOEs reaped a profit of 79.5 billion yuan (11.64 billion U.S. dollars) in October, up 151 percent year on year, said Huang Shuhe, deputy director of the State-owed Assets Supervision and Administration Commission (SASAC) at the 2009 Annual CEO Forum.     In October, revenues surged by 22 percent from a year ago to nearly 1.16 trillion yuan, Huang said.     Their profits during Jan-Oct was 633.8 billion yuan, while revenues amounted to 9.83 trillion yuan during the same period.     Huang also noted 24 central SOEs had entered the rank of Fortune 500 companies.     "China's companies still face difficulties and great challenges due to roaring raw material prices, huge environmental pressure and rampant protectionism triggered by the financial crisis," he said.     He said the companies should further enhance independent innovation, improve corporate governance and accelerate the pace of "go global" to compete with foreign brands.

COPENHAGEN, Dec. 15 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon said on Tuesday that China, a developing country, has taken important measures in reducing its emission of greenhouse gas.     "China has also taken quite important measures by cutting forty to forty-five percent of energy intensity by 2020," Ban said at a press conference on the sidelines of the UN climate change conference in Copenhagen.     Ban arrived here earlier on Tuesday to open a high-level segment of the conference, which entered its ninth day of negotiations on a new global deal to push forward the fight against climate change.     The UN chief said he was fully aware of particular challenges faced by developing countries, in particular poor countries, calling on rich countries to improve their commitments in climate financing.     The climate change negotiations were now in a critical but difficult situation as developed countries and developing countries remain divided on key issues, including climate financing.     Developed countries have been reluctant to provide financial support to help developing countries mitigate and adapt to climate change. So far, they only indicated to give 10 billion U.S. dollars annually in the three years between 2010 and 2012.     Ban said developed countries should go beyond the fast-start support and also address medium and long-term financing scaled up to needs.     "I have been urging that developed countries should begin discussing the medium and long term financial support packages," he said, calling on all countries to overcome national interests or interests of any particular groups.     "That would be one of the keys in bridging the gap between developed and developing countries," he added.     Speaking at the same press conference, Danish Prime Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said he was encouraged by China's move to set national targets of reducing greenhouse gas emission.     "I am very encouraged by the fact that China has proposed, at this stage, nationally binding targets for mitigation which deviates from business as usual," he said.     But he added China should translate those national targets into some kind of international language.
