College enrollment is dropping sharply among high school seniors.A new report finds the number of students who immediately went on to college this year fell by nearly 22% on average.Breaking that down by area, under-served communities have been hit hardest, nearly a 30% drop for low-income high schools and 33% for high poverty high schools. The National College Attainment Network funded the research. They tell us students lost access to support networks when schools went virtual. And then, many students in communities hit hardest by COVID-19 didn't have a choice other than to get a job and support their families.“They get used to that. Their families get used to that. Their families need that from them, and it makes the idea of thinking about college later in life after high school graduation all the more impossible,” said Kim Cook, Executive Director at the National College Attainment Network. The group's biggest message is to stay engaged. It's not too late to apply for federal student aid, like the Pell Grant or subsidized student loans. There are online resources through the U.S. Department of Education and platforms like the Common App that offer chat options to answer questions.Even just a couple classes at a community college will help keep you on track. You can also reach out to institutions you previously applied to but felt like you couldn't go to. Talk to the financial aid office about how your circumstances have changed.“This is all about making it an open conversation and reaching out to those supports and telling them you'd like to enroll and asking them to help you make that happen and what kind of options you have now,” said Cook. The data suggests that declining college enrollment will not only continue, but possibly get worse next fall. This time of year, current seniors should be focusing on keeping grades up and writing essays for applications. 1897

CVS hears the Amazon footsteps -- and the pharmacy giant is wasting no time trying to get ahead of any Jeff Bezos plan to disrupt the drug store business the way that he has the rest of retail.CVS said Monday that it plans to offer next day delivery of prescription drugs nationwide in 2018. In some urban markets, CVS will even deliver on the same day.A program to deliver both medications and a select offering of other CVS products from the front of the store will begin in Manhattan on December 4.CVS CEO Larry Merlo made the announcements during the company's earnings conference call with analysts. The news comes just a few weeks after reports surfaced that Amazon had received wholesale pharmacy licenses in a dozen states. That move would potentially allow Amazon to sell prescription medications online. The speculation caused the shares of CVS and rival Walgreens to fall, as did pharmacy benefits manager company Express Scripts, a competitor of the CVS-owned PBM Caremark. The stocks of drug distributors Cardinal Health, AmerisourceBergen and McKesson all fell too. This is because investors are worried that Amazon, which is already changing the dynamics of the grocery business thanks to its acquisition of Whole Foods, may look to do the same for drug stores. But Merlo said during the call with analysts Monday that he still sees Amazon as more of a potential ally than threat."You would never close the door on any type of partnership," Merlo said, when asked by an analyst about possibly working with Amazon.Still, CVS seems to recognize that the health care landscape is changing rapidly, and it needs to adjust. There have even been recent rumors that CVS may look to buy health insurer Aetna.Aetna scrapped plans to merge with rival Humana earlier this year due to intense regulatory scrutiny. Another insurer merger proposed by Anthem and Cigna died as well.Since then, the lines between health insurers and the pharmacy giants have grown increasingly blurred and incestuous.Anthem recently started up its own PBM, called IngenioRX, and has partnered with CVS.And Walgreens has partnered with a Blue Cross-backed PBM Prime Therapeutics to form a new mail order pharmacy company.Merlo and other CVS executives did not address any of the Aetna chatter on the conference call. But if the rumors are true -- and if an Aetna deal passed antitrust scrutiny -- then CVS appears to be on its way towards building a formidable health care/retail giant that may avoid getting Amazon-ed.  2507

CLEVELAND — A Cleveland website is facing backlash after attempting to be humorous about the foreclosure crisis and sex trafficking. Coolcleveland.com wrote an article about an upcoming gingerbread house making event at restaurant TownHall. In the now deleted post, the site said "the foreclosure crisis left a lot of empty gingerbread houses around Cleveland. Many end up becoming dens for cracker addicts." It also mentioned "gingerbread sex slaves."A spokesperson for TownHall said they were upset by the post. "We are appalled by the article written by Cool Cleveland. We had no prior knowledge of the article, nor did we approve the article in any way.  The moment we saw the post, I personally called Cool Cleveland to express the inappropriateness and requested it be taken down immediately," Director of Communications Kayla Barnes said. A publisher for Coolcleveland.com apologized for the post and wanted others to know TownHall was not responsible for the content. You can read the full apology below:  1066

Countless times, every day across the country, dispatchers field calls for help that can be hard to answer. In Eugene, Oregon, sometimes the answer is people like Dan Felts.“Sometimes, what we need in our most desperate hour is somebody to talk to,” Felts said.In Eugene and its neighboring city of Springfield, when a non-emergency, non-criminal call comes in through 911 or a non-emergency line to a dispatcher, they can send a mental health professional like Felts, instead of police.“Make sure people have access to resources, other than law enforcement, when they’re having mental health crisis,” Felts explained.Felts is a member of CAHOOTS, which stands for Crisis Assistance Helping out on the Streets."We don’t show up with weaponry, we don’t show up with handcuffs,” Felts said. The belief is unarmed CAHOOTS teams of crisis workers and medics can be a better response to people struggling with issues like mental health or emotional crisis."When a police officer goes and they look like me, gun, badge, you know it’s a little demonstrative and sometimes it has the tendency to escalate the situation,” said Eugene Police Chief Chris Skinner. "When somebody like CAHOOTS goes, it’s people who are kind of dressed the same and look the same. They just have a softer approach, and it tends to deescalate things."“There are lots of these kind of call types that are non-violent in nature; they’re simply somebody crying out for help,” says Ben Brubaker, director at White Bird Clinic. The clinic is a non-profit that provides an array of services like counseling, dental care, and other services to people in need in the Eugene area. It’s run CAHOOTS since the late 80s. Brubaker says communities are now calling White Bird for guidance on putting similar programs to CAHOOTS in place.Denver, Colorado launched a pilot program last month.“We need to change the way our public safety work and see how public safety looks through a different lens,” Brubaker said. It’s a viewpoint of listening to voices they believe across the country haven’t been heard enough.“We show up to bear witness, see you as a human being, and offer whatever kind of support we can without judgement,” Felts said. 2199
