NEW YORK — The iconic Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade won't march through Manhattan this year as it traditionally has for decades, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Monday.In a statement, Macy's said that while it won't be able to utilize its traditional parade route, the event will still be broadcast nationwide on Thanksgiving morning. The made-for-TV special will showcase all the balloons, floats and performances of the parade from Herald Square in Manhattan, and will still be capped off with an appearance by Santa Claus.While the country continues to grapple with the coronavirus pandemic, de Blasio said large gatherings like parades still have to wait."It will not be the same parade we're used to," the mayor said. "It will be a different kind of event. Nestled along the edge of Lake Champlain, where Vermont and New York meet, is the kind of place postcards aspire.Beautiful farmlands like Seth Lapidow’s sit in Shoreham, Vermont. But while there are some animals on Lapidow’s farm, he’s a very different kind of farmer.Late last year, this 62-year-old farmer gave up his multimillion-dollar New York City law firm, to begin a start-up CBD farm. Things grew almost as quickly as the cannabidiol plants that surround his property.“At the end of 2019, we had a solid year. We had a solid year,” said Lapidow, while looking out toward the apple orchards that surround his property.But when COVID-19 struck, the farm had to shut down for two months. There was no harvesting and no retail sales. Even months after the shutdown, there are still streams of revenue for this farm that have disappeared completely.“People stopped paying their bills. I don’t know what the murder rate of my customers is. I don’t know how many are gone for good,” Lapidow said.After initially laying off all his employees, he has been able to rehire most of them. Sales are still down year-to-year, but COVID is giving some in the industry an unexpected boost.Researchers at Augusta University in Georgia have found new evidence that cannabis-derived CBD may help those suffering from severe lung inflammation that occurs in more serious cases of COVID-19.Legally, because it's not FDA approved, Lapidow can't make claims about what his products do. NEWBURY PARK (KGTV) -- A wind-driven brush fire has erupted in Southern California, burning near structures in the Newbury Park area of Ventura County.Cal Fire says the Hill Fire has quickly grown to 5,000 to 7,000 acres, shutting down both directions of Highway 101, as of 4 p.m. More than 160 firefighters have been dispatched, and eight air tankers have been ordered.At a Thursday night news conference, Ventura County fire officials said they expect the blaze to burn all the way to the Pacific Ocean. Should winds pick up, the blaze could reach the ocean by Friday morning. According to firefighters, the fuel burning hasn't seen a wildfire in a long time, adding to the intensity of the fire. One firefighter did receive minor injuries fighting the blaze. The nature of the injury wasn't specified. The Hill Fire is about 5 miles from the site of a shooting Wednesday night at a bar in Thousand Oaks, California, in which 12 people were killed.It's the second brush fire in the area as another fire, dubbed the Woolsey Fire, had burned about 300 acres to the east in the Bell Canyon area as of 4 p.m.Gusty Santa Ana winds are blowing through Ventura and neighboring Los Angeles counties at about 25-30 miles per hour. NEW YORK CITY — An illegal party on a New York City cruise ship was shut down early Sunday morning, city sheriff's deputies said.The Liberty Belle, which is operated by Empire Cruises, was spotted on Saturday departing from Pier 36 in Manhattan with dozens of people aboard, according to officials and photos of the boat.The person who posted the photo on Twitter said it appeared no one was wearing masks or social distancing.Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer said her office would contact city and state agencies regarding the incident.The Sheriff's Office later said its deputies intercepted the owners and captain of the ship and arrested them for operating an illegal party in violation of social distancing provisions in the city and state emergency executive orders as well as other charges.A request for comment from Empire Cruises was not immediately returned.The company stopped operations in March because of the COVID-19 outbreak and a city emergency executive order, according to its website.This story was originally published by Lauren Cook on WPIX in New York City. 1095

NEW YORK (AP) — In a sign of how the pandemic is remaking Hollywood traditions, AMC Theatres and Universal Studios on Tuesday announced an agreement for a shortened theatrical window, with the studio’s films playing for a minimum of just 17 days in cinemas compared to the typical 90 days.Studios have increasingly sought to shorten that window and deliver new movies more quickly into the home.After 17 days, Universal Pictures and Focus Features will have the option to make their films available across premium video on demand platforms, including Netflix, Amazon Prime and AMC Theatres On Demand.“The theatrical experience continues to be the cornerstone of our business.
