Black Friday shoppers should beware this year that as the pandemic drives more people online, it also provides more opportunities for hackers digging for information they can steal.As more people work from home, they're using gadgets and electronics for both work and play, often using the same passwords. This might leave those looking to do online shopping for the holidays vulnerable to hackers."We've seen a major surge in the deployment of malware, bad code that can intercept your online shopping," said Dr. Richard Harknett, co-director of the Ohio Cyber Range Institute.Shoppers should be aware of the hallmarks of a secure site: a locked padlock icon near the URL in the browser, or "https" in the web address box, instead of "http.""I know that sounds a little technical, but this is the first thing you need to know if the place that you're going to give your money to in the form of a credit card is safe," said Harknett.Experts also suggest using credit cards to make purchases, instead of debit cards so shoppers' entire bank account isn't exposed to fraud if something goes wrong. BAY VILLAGE, Ohio — A priest in Bay Village says someone called police about a homeless person sleeping on a bench. It turns out it was actually a statue of Jesus.The sculpture was created by Timothy Schmalz, and depicts Jesus wrapped in a blanket and lying on a bench.Within 20 minutes of the sculpture's installation at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, police were called, according to the church's pastor, Alex Martin. He tweeted that an officer told him someone had called to report a homeless person sleeping on a park bench.Scripps station WEWS in Cleveland reached out to Bay Village police, who have not yet responded to a request for more information.According to the church's website, because Bay Village isn't impacted much by poverty, the statue is meant to remind residents how serious homelessness is in the world.The temporary installment will be on display until Dec. 1.The church is currently raising money to try and help the homeless. Black Friday has already been changing over the last few years with online shopping getting more popular and people getting tired of fighting the crowds, but stores are now further reinventing the shopping holiday because of the pandemic.Home Depot came out this week saying for the first time that it's offering Black Friday deals starting in early November that will last through December, in-store and online.Best Buy, Target and Amazon are some of the other companies saying they'll be offering holiday deals earlier than before. Target is saying you can get deals starting in October and Amazon will reportedly start offering deals then too.“This is where consumers have to be smart and consumers have to themselves do the research and go, ‘is this really a deal or is this what they were running last week and this week they're saying it's a Black Friday sale?’” said Jane Boyd Thomas, a marketing professor at Winthrop University.Boyd Thomas has been researching Black Friday for years. She says a very small percentage of people will still want to go shopping on the day after Thanksgiving, because it's a ritual.She expects we'll see some supply chain issues for the holidays like we saw early in the pandemic.“So, I would say to consumers, if there's something your child wants or you want, and it's on sale, that you probably should get it then, because the guarantees about waiting for later for a better deal may or may not come and the supply may not be there,” said Boyd Thomas.She expects we could see most of the issues with electronics and anything being imported. 1590

Bills are mounting for many Americans and another one being added to the pile for some on unemployment is a bill to pay back the money they were given.“This is a massive financial hardship,” said Michele Evermore with the National Employment Law Project (NELP).Evermore explained the notice to pay back unemployment is most often due to an error somewhere in the application process or when an applicant filed for continued benefits each week."Either the agency made a mistake, or someone clicked the wrong button on a form somewhere and now are being informed that they have been overpaid for months and now have to payback tens of thousands of dollars,” she added.In some cases, when an error was found on one week, the agency disqualified people for the entire time they were unemployed.“That is a lot of money and it is money that people spent on housing and food and they have no way to get it back,” said Evermore.It is unclear on a national level just how many people are getting notices of overpayment. That’s, in part, because states are just starting to look into this and report. However, so far, states like Texas reported it is seeking refunds from 260,000 people, Ohio announced it overpaid at least 160,000 people, and in Virginia, the number of people overpaid is at least 35,000.“We are going to hear a lot more of this happening in a lot more states, and we are going to hear a lot more horror stories if this legislation isn’t passed,” explained Evermore.In its stimulus package, the House of Representatives has included legislation that would waive the unemployment overpayments as long as they aren’t considered fraudulent activity. However, the package is unpopular with the Senate. NELP believes the forgiveness is critical to those on unemployment and our economy.“It was estimated during the last recession that every dollar spent on unemployment insurance generated .61 in local economic activity,” said Evermore. "So, imagine that in reverse, imagine that money getting sucked out of communities as we are still in very rough economic times.”Without federal waivers, that could be a reality. NELP added that people in a situation where they have received a notice of overpayment have two options to consider, if they cannot afford to repay the benefit. In some states, you can file for a waiver, especially if the mistake was made on the part of the states’ unemployment system. If you do not qualify for a waiver, you can seek an appeal and review of your particular case. 2511
