(WKBW) — The New York State United Teachers are holding a press conference on Thursday calling for a strengthened statewide mask mandate in schools, which includes masks to be worn at all times in school.The teachers union says it will release a letter to the state Department of Health calling for revised school reopening guidance.“The governor has said — and we agree — that parents and educators must be confident in their school district’s reopening plan in order for this to work,” NYSUT President Andy Pallotta said. “As we hear of disparate mask procedures and other issues in reopening plans across the state, it’s clear that the state must step in. A Highlands County, Florida resident has died from rabies after being bitten by a bat, the Florida Department of Health has confirmed.The DOH says that the disease was likely transmitted when the individual was bitten by the bat. They say that the individual did not seek treatment at that time and did not receive rabies post-exposure prophylaxis. The individual passed away from the rabies infection.DOH says that it is important to avoid direct contact with wildlife. If you believe you may have been exposed to rabies, including any physical contact with a bat, contact your health care provider and your county health department right away.If an exposure occurred, it is important to administer treatment in a timely manner.
