YUSHU, Qinghai, April 16 (Xinhua) -- The death toll had climbed to 1,144 and another 417 remained missing as of 5 p.m. Friday, about two and a half days after a devastating earthquake shook a Tibetan area in northwest China's Qinghai Province. The 7.1-magnitude earthquake, which shook the Yushu County in the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yushu at 7:49 a.m. Wednesday, has left 11,744 people injured, including 1,192 serious cases, Xia Xueping, spokesman with the emergency rescue headquarters, told a press briefing late Friday.Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao (R) visits a Tibetan woman in Yushu, northwest China's Qinghai Province, April 15, 2010. Wen arrived here on Thursday to inspect the disaster relief work and visit quake-affected local people. Xia said the death toll rose markedly Friday because the expanding rescue forces recovered more bodies from the debris with the help of large rescue equipment. In addition, the missing list climbed as the transient population in the business town were counted for the first time, he said.A total of 1,179 serious cases had been transported by air and road to hospitals in Golmud and the provincial capital Xining in Qinghai and several other capitals in neighboring provinces. Many people are still buried under the debris of collapsed houses in the hardest-hit Gyegu Town near the epicenter, the seat of the Yushu prefecture government and home to 100,000 people. It sits at about 4,000 meters above sea level.More than 85 percent of houses in Gyegu, mostly made of mudbrick and wood, had collapsed.Thousands of rescuers are fighting altitude sickness and chilly weather to race the time to reach the trapped by Saturday morning, the end of internationally accepted "72-hour golden chance" for the trapped to still survive.

CHENGDU, May 29 (Xinhua) -- China Saturday started construction of a center in southwestern China's Sichuan Province to train giant pandas born in captivity to live in the wild. The center is located at Majiagou of Yutang Town, Dujiangyan City, said Zhang Zhihe, head of the Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding and Research Base and founder of the center. The center covers an area of 134.87 hectares and will cost 160 million yuan (23.5 million U.S. dollars). After the center is completed, the breeding and research base will put 40 to 50 giant pandas raised in captivity into the center for training and research, according to Zhang. The center will cooperate with the Chengdu breeding and research base, the Wolong Giant Panda Conservation Base, the Dujiangyan Disease Control and Prevention Center for Giant Pandas and the Shaanxi Rescue Center for Endangered Animals. In the experimental zone of the center being built, the giant pandas will be trained to reduce their dependency on humans. But they will still live in cages. After five to 10 years training in the experimental zone, the giant pandas that perform well will be introduced into the "half-natural" zone.In the following five to 10 years, the pandas there will live in tree holes or caves and forage for food. But they will still receive frequent checkups and participate in artificial breeding. Then, only one or two of the giant pandas will have the chance to spend another five to 10 years in a nearly "natural" zone with little human contact. Then they will be released into the nearby giant panda natural reserve, Zhang said.Giant pandas are the world's most endangered species. Some 1,590 panda live in the wild and over 300 pandas are in captivity in China, Zhang said.China started a giant panda training project in 2003 to teach the animals to live in the wild. But the project suffered a major setback when Xiang Xiang, a five-year-old male panda, was found dead in a remote part of the Wolong Nature Reserve in February 2007.Xiang Xiang was released into the wild in April 2006 after nearly three years of training.

SIRTE, Libya, March 27 (Xinhua) -- Chinese special envoy to the Middle East Wu Sike will convey on Saturday a message from President Hu Jintao to the Arab leaders during their 22nd summit billed "Summit of supporting Jerusalem' Steadfastness," kicked off today in the Libyan city of Sirte. In an exclusive interview with Xinhua News Agency, Wu said he came to the Arab summit, carrying a message from Chinese President Hu Jintao to the Arab leaders, extending congratulations on the occasion of the summit.China is paying much attention to the promotion of relations with the Arab world, Wu said, adding that China appreciates and supports the Arab efforts aiming to enhance cooperation and solidarity between the two sides.Speaking of the Chinese position towards the Israeli practices in the occupied lands, Wu said that China supports the Arab endeavors aiming to reach peace. The Chinese stance is cut-clear in this regard, Wu stressed, noting that China supports reaching a solution to the issue, based on international legitimacy resolutions, which state that Israel has no rights to impose any changes on lands occupied in 1967.Wu also pointed to China's long-standing position calling for the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state and for peaceful coexistence between Israel and the Palestinians, saying this is China's permanent position which it will adhere to in all international forums.About China's vision towards the Israeli settlement activity, Wu said China categorically rejects the settlement activities in the occupied lands.During contacts with Israel, China showed commitment to this stance, to the importance of stopping the settlement activities, and to creating favorable circumstances for talks, Wu noted, saying that his attendance of the Arab summit comes within China's support for the Arabs, and to coordinate stances between the two sides. As for the Arab-Chinese Cooperation Forum, due to be held this May in China, Wu said that China and the Arab world are bound with favorable political ties and expanded, intensive economic cooperation. In the light of the global economic crisis, the strengthening of Chinese-Arab cooperation is of high importance.Over the past six years following the establishment of China- Arab Cooperation Forum, bilateral relations have seen tangible development, Wu said. The fourth session of the China-Arab Cooperation Forum, slated for May 13-14, will see an assessment of the Arab-Chinese cooperation over the past six years and means to push this cooperation forward in the future.China is represented by a delegation at the 22nd Arab summit, entitled "Summit of Supporting Jerusalem's Steadfastness," as an observer.

BEIJING, April 7 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang urged the boosting of efforts to prevent and control the hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) nationwide as the illness re-emerges in parts of the country."Spring and summer is a peak period for infectious diseases. Currently, preventing and controlling various infectious diseases such as the hand-foot-mouth disease is a key task," Li said Wednesday at a meeting on a nationwide health campaign. At least five children died of HFMD and another 9,863 cases have been reported in central China's Henan Province as of March 23.
