BEIJING, June 12 (Xinhua) -- China's trade surplus would likely fall noticeably this year as exports outlook would not be optimistic while imports would remain robust, Ministry of Commerce spokesman Yao Jian said at a briefing Saturday.Exports growth would slow after July, Yao forecast, adding the surge in exports in May was due to a low comparison basis last year. China's exports in May surged 48.5 percent year on year, customs data released Thursday.China's trade surplus in the first five months fell 59.9 percent to 35.39 billion U.S. dollars. The figure in 2009 topped 196.07 billion U.S. dollars, down 34.2 percent year on year.Yao attributed the weak export outlook to the European sovereign debt crisis, rising commodity prices and labor costs."In the following months, the fallout from the debt crisis in Europe would gradually become apparent, and China would closely watch changes in its important exports markets including Germany, Spain and Italy," Yao said.China would maintain stable trade policies amid the crisis, and might adjust some policies in some specific industries for environmental protection purposes."Stable trade policies are a top priority when the external outlook is not clear," he said.Yao also told reporters that attempts by some U.S. lawmakers to include China's exchange rate policy into trade investigations on China's exports of aluminum extrusions and coated paper lacked factual support and did not conform to rules of the World Trade Organization. The WTO regulated trade policies instead of a country's overall financial or foreign exchange policies, he said.

BEIJING, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao met here Wednesday with Singapore President S.R. Nathan. BEIJING, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang has urged food quality authorities to strengthen supervision in order to significantly improve food safety.Li, who also chairs a national food safety commission, made the remarks at a recent conference of the commission. He further called for efforts to optimize the supervision and accountability system for food safety, which would be made up of local governments, food companies and other related government departments.Authorities must constantly crackdown on unsafe food, with specific operations to uncover and destroy "problem milk powder" .Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang (2nd L, back) presides over a plenary meeting of the food safety commission under the State Council in Beijing, capital of China, Aug. 16, 2010.The government would hold accountable related officials in areas recording repeated food safety incidents and those who committed dereliction of duty in food safety supervision, he said.A long-term mechanism must be formed to ensure the safety of "major products" such as diary products and edible oil, he said.At the conference, senior officials from the health ministry and other central departments described the ongoing work of uncovering "problem milk powder" and the plans to establish a long-term mechanism to ensure the safety of diary products. The establishment of the commission early this year followed a string of nationwide crackdowns and arrests in the wake of new melamine-tainted milk products being found in Shanghai as well as Liaoning, Shandong and Shaanxi in recent months. The melamine milk scandal occurred in 2008. Milk laced with melamine led to the deaths of six babies and sickened 300,000 others who had been fed with baby formula made from tainted milk.

UNITED NATIONS, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- China on Wednesday voiced its support to the efforts to counter Somali piracy in accordance with the international law and the relevant Security Council resolutions. The statement came as Li Baodong, the Chinese permanent representative to the United Nations, was taking the floor at an open Security Council meeting on piracy off the Somali coast. The 15-nation Council began the meeting on Wednesday morning to discuss a report by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on how to prosecute and imprison Somali pirates."China supports the activities carried out to combat Somali piracy in accordance with the international law and the resolutions of the Security Council," Li said. "At present, naval operations of the countries concerned to combat piracy and to protect navigation have played a very positive role in safeguarding the safety of international navigation.""At the same time, the issue of how to prosecute the pirates caught has come to the fore," he said. "China supports strengthening international cooperation in prosecuting the Somali pirates under the framework of the existing international law, and appreciates the work carried out by the countries concerned, particularly coastal states.""We also call upon international community to provide the necessary support to the coastal states to enhance their legal capacity, and China welcomes their report in this regard and will join others to further study the legal framework," he said."Recently, although pirate attacks off the coast of Somalia have continued, threatening the safety of international navigation, their success rate has started to decline, reflecting the initial success of counter-piracy international cooperation," he said."However, at the same time, the root causes that give rise to the piracy off the coast of Somalia have not been eradicated, and these pirates remain and their behavior is starting to change with elaborate organization and more covert methods of attack, and they have expanded their scope of operations into the Indian Ocean," he said. "This has shown that the task for combating piracy is still very arduous, and it calls for further comprehensive efforts by the international community so as to eradicate the Somali piracy both from its phenomenon and root cause."
