SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Schools across San Diego County can reopen for in-person learning if they choose to on Tuesday, Sept. 1, as long as our COVID-19 case rate stays low enough through Sunday, Aug. 31.The county will be providing free testing for all school employees, which is strongly recommended by the California Department of Public Health.“What we’re going to be doing is making testing available at over 20 County-coordinated sites,” said Supervisor Nathan Fletcher. “In addition to that, we’re working with the San Diego Office of Education to open additional testing sites regionally that will be dedicated to school staff.”County officials say testing for asymptomatic children is discouraged, but if parents feel the need to have their children tested, they should consult with their pediatrician.Eight to ten school districts plan to reopen within the next two weeks to one month, according to Dr. Paul Gothold, San Diego County Office of Education Superintendent.“If there’s 5% of positive cases identified in one school, then the entire school would need to shut down,” said Gothold.More than 100 schools, mostly private, applied for waivers to reopen for in-person learning. The county stopped accepting the waivers this week since all schools can likely reopen soon.“I feel confident that we’re ready to reopen,” said Holly McClurg, Superintended of the Del Mar Union School District. The district’s waiver was approved, McClurg said district officials have been working with experts, physicians, and parents for months to develop a safe reopening plan.She said students and teachers at the district’s eight schools were split into two groups. Parents and teachers had the option of choosing virtual learning or in-person learning, said McClurg.Virtual learning started this week, and in-person learning will begin on Sept. 8.“We knew that we had prepared and done a very diligent job of making sure that all of the practices, protocols, PPE were in place. We’ve had expertise throughout this entire community that’s been instrumental in helping us make this decision,” she said. “I feel confident that we’re ready to reopen and can hardly wait to see everyone on Sept. 8.”Some of the larger districts have decided to stick with strictly distance learning for now, including San Diego Unified and the Chula Vista Elementary School District.A spokesperson for Sweetwater Union High School District tells ABC 10News that because COVID-19 continues to have a significant impact on communities in the Southbay, schools will continue with distance learning at least through Oct. 2. Superintendent Dr. Carmen Garcia sent ABC 10News a statement saying in part, “Our Governing Board will be approving our return to in-person instruction at our upcoming September board meeting.”Poway Unified will also start virtually on Sept. 2, but parents received a letter from the superintendent which read in part, “Even with this shorter, revised reopening timeline, we have no way of knowing for certain whether San Diego County will be able go 14 straight days staying off the monitoring list. As a large school district, we cannot wait until the day before the first day of school to find out. We already know the constantly changing timelines and decisions have made planning extremely difficult and frustrating for District leadership, our staff, and our families. As a result, to avoid further uncertainty for our staff and families planning for Fall, the Board of Education reaffirmed our Sept. 2 fully virtual start at its last meeting. Before the vote, the ordinance only addressed underage drinking, but not drugs. The amendment, which was approved unanimously, will now go before the council for a second reading before it becomes law. “As a mom, the safety of my children is my priority, and as City Attorney, I am committed to protecting every child,” City Attorney Mara W. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — St. Augustine High School, an all-boys Catholic school in North Park, has filed a lawsuit against California Gov. Gavin Newsom and other state officials to allow the school to reopen for in-person instruction.The school says that after holding its summer school and athletic programs in-person for more than 400 students without any reports of COVID-19 cases, they are seeking to stop the state's enforcement against in-person classes during the pandemic this fall."At Saints, we don’t believe remote learning is sufficient to provide a quality education our students are entitled to and our families have come to expect," said Principal James Horne. "We are confident we can open our school safely, consistent with CDC and San Diego County health guidance. We ran a safe and successful summer school program and believe it is an indicator that we can safely return to school in the fall."The school says it adhered to the county's public health guidelines and safety measures during its summer programs, including required to face masks, social distancing requirements, air conditioning systems using UV lights to sanitize the air, and buildings and classrooms being regularly sanitized with an electrostatic disinfecting mist system.St. Augustine also said a distance learning option would still be offered for families who don't want to send their children back to school in-person."After appeals from many families to return to the classroom, Saints is pursuing the best way to offer opportunities that are the right fit for all its students and families," the school said. 1604

The special event will take place every weekend until SeaWorld can fully open. The park's attractions will be very limited, with guests able to enjoy all outdoor animals exhibits and shows."We’re opening as an accredited zoo and you can come in and enjoy all the live animal presentations we’re world famous for like the Orca Encounter, dolphins, Sea Lions Live and all the outdoor exhibits that people love and miss," said SeaWorld Park President Marilyn Hannes..Among closed signs for indoor exhibits, game rooms and rides, guests will also notice dozens of sanitizer stations, distance markers and download codes for digital park maps spread throughout.Visitors will also be able to continue enjoying the tide pool areas. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Scripps Health in San Diego is inundated with calls from people who are worried that they might have the coronavirus.“Understandably, people are now getting upper respiratory infections and right away they're thinking is this COVID-19 so they're calling the line and we're giving them the help that they need,” says Dr. David Wetherhold.The hospital network's dedicated COVID-19 nurse line is reportedly peaking at 60 calls every 15 minutes, connecting patients to nurses for screenings. If a nurse believes that a phone call warrants a video call and the video call warrants actual testing, the nurse will assign the patient a time to park outside one of the cabanas now staged outside three of the Scripps Health clinics. The patient will then call in. “A single licensed provider will come out to your car [and] do an evaluation. They'll check your blood pressure. They'll check your temperature. They'll check your pulse and your oxygenation level and then they will obtain the COVID-19 sample which is a swab into the nose,” adds Wetherhold.Wetherhold says COVID-19 test results come back in two to four days. Positive patients will only need to return for treatment if their symptoms are unmanageable. He's also working vigorously on Scripps Health’s larger telehealth program. It was supposed to roll out over the next 18 months, but with COVID-19, it's been compressed into a few weeks. Wetherhold tells 10News that patients who are considered "at risk" are in desperate need of virtual care so that they can avoid any potential exposure to COVID-19. “The immunocompromised, transplant patients, heart failure patients or cancer patients. [They’re] going to be our initial focus [with] trying to get them the care they need remotely without bringing them out into the community," Wetherhold said.Scripps Health’s nurse line is 888-261-8431 and is staffed from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Friday, and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday.The cabanas are located outside Scripps Clinic Torrey Pines, Scripps Clinic Rancho Bernardo and Scripps Coastal Medical Center Vista and are only available to patients directed there through the nurse line. 2189
