(KGTV) — CHP officers are searching for the driver who hit a motorcyclist in the North County on Friday and fled the scene.At about 6:30 a.m., a 44-year-old man was riding a 2014 Yamaha motorcycle on southbound Interstate 15 north of State Route 78. The driver of a Kia Soul changed lanes, hitting the motorcyclist, and ejecting him from the bike and into the center divider, CHP says.After the collision, the Kia avoided hitting the rider but fled the scene.The motorcyclist was taken to a nearby hospital with major injuries that are considered non-life threatening.The Kia Soul SUV is described as being a 2014 year model or newer and brown in color. Vehicle parts with identification numbers that were recovered at the scene are being processed, CHP said.The vehicle will also have damage to the driver side and is missing a driver's side mirror, CHP added.Anyone with information is asked to call CHP at 858-560-0474. 948

Construction is underway to build what leaders say will be an icon of the city.Spanning 108 ft wide, a new arch will be lifted 40 ft above the intersection of Grand Avenue and Centre City Parkway."Escondido is just the hidden jewel of North County; in fact, Escondido means hidden valley and beautiful hidden valley. We're starting to live up to that more than I've ever seen," said Dan Forster.Forster owns Design Moe Kitchen & Bath and has watched new blood elevate the historic downtown over the last ten years, including restaurants, breweries, and new businesses. Also vice president of the Escondido Downtown Business Association, Forster says they've wanted a grand sign like this for years, but he says it was cost-prohibitive. Forster says that changed with an anonymous million donation made to the Escondido Charitable Foundation for the arch. "There's no money that's being taken out of the city budgets to pay for this, it's just one big beautiful sign," said Forster. Crews will raise the sign on March 3. ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- An Escondido-based avocado grower is voluntarily recalling avocados sold in bulk due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. Henry Avocado Corporation issued the recall Saturday due to positive test results on environmental samples taken during routine inspection of its packaging facility. So far, there are no reports of illness. The recalled products were packaged at Henry Avocado’s packaging facility and distributed to Arizona, California, Florida, New Hampshire, North Carolina and Wisconsin. Customers can identify the recalled fruit by the “Bravocado” stickers. Henry Avocado organic products do not carry the “Bravocado” label on the sticker. Instead those products are labeled “organic” and include “California” on the sticker.All shipments from the facility are subject to the recall. According to the company, avocados imported from Mexico and distributed by Henry Avocado are not part of the recall. The company said in a news release that it’s contacting all affected customers to make sure the products are removed from shelves. Anyone who purchased the recalled product are urged to discard or return the items for a full refund. ESCONDIDO (KGTV) -- Hundreds of North County school children were surprised Thursday with a new book for National Reading Day, along with a visit from Clifford the Big Red Dog. 10News employees, with help from the Scripps Howard Foundation, donated 3,000 books to elementary schools in Fallbrook and Escondido. It was the most books ever donated by the station in the annual “If You Give a Child a Book…” campaign, and nearly twice as many as last year, said Community Outreach & PR Manager Patty Thompson.Kindergartners and first graders at Live Oak Elementary in Fallbrook and Farr Avenue Elementary in Escondido lined up to greet Clifford and pick out a book of their own. Other books will be donated to libraries in the districts, Thompson said.At Live Oak Elementary, one girl picked out a new book about Barbie. “I like to read because sometimes, when it’s a fairy tale, it can take you to magical places,” she said.“A lot of these kids can’t afford books,” said Live Oak Elementary librarian Stacey Regotti.Farr Avenue principal Lizeth Lopez said encouraging students to read early is critical.“Data shows that if we can’t get our kids to read by third grade, their future may be limited,” she said. “So starting at 4, 5, and 6 years old is when we can catch them.”10News is owned by the E.W. (KGTV) - Students in the San Dieguito Union High School District won't be returning to campus in January.Monday morning, the school board voted to confirm that it will not continue with its reopening plan that would have brought students back on campus one day a week beginning on January 4th, with the option of returning five days a week on the 27th.The move comes after the union representing the teachers filed a lawsuit last week to block the return.Jason Barry's daughter is in 7th at Earl Warren Middle School. She was looking forward to returning to class."Here we are again, kicking the can down the road. I hope this isn't a pattern that is going to continue," said Barry.Barry broke the news to his daughter Monday after the board vote. "She's gone from, as this whole thing has gone on, she's gone from tears to frustration to just quiet," said Barry.Newly elected Trustee Michael Allman was the only board member to vote against ratifying the settlement reached last week with the union."We offer all this accommodation so that these essential workers, who are guaranteed the highest paid in the county can teach our kids, and they say thank you by filing a lawsuit , and then they offer to settle as they hold the kids as bargaining chips and I just don't want to reward that behavior," said Allman during the meeting which was held via Zoom.The California Teachers Association filed a legal petition on behalf of the San Dieguito Faculty Association. The union said the district's reopening plan violated the state's public health rules concerning the pandemic.Under the state's health mandate, schools that were already open for in-person instruction were allowed to remain open. The legal petition challenged the district's definition of "open," alleging that none of the schools was open for regular instruction; instead, they were open for small cohorts.The union also estimated up to 20% of teachers would not return in January either for health concerns or childcare issues.Barry and other parents are starting a grassroots effort to make it easier for people to become substitutes. Many parents say they are willing to step in to help fill the void. The district has said there is a shortage of subs."Whatever I need to do, to get this across the line if I need to be a substitute teacher, be one body that can help, I'm going to do that," said Barry.Barry said he worries about the impact of remote learning on his daughter's development."This whole situation is causing a stunting to, I would say, an entire generation of kids who should be engaging, learning, growing, expanding their boundaries, and now they are stuck at home not testing themselves with their peers.
