They’re hoping to address the issue by asking why people believe and share false information.Researchers say the process people use to process and share information, particularly on social media, can help provide some answers. Studies show people tend to use cognitive shortcuts when they decide what to share online.For a person sharing a particular article or picture, those shortcuts involve asking themselves:Is the content consistent with what they have shared before?Is the content consistent with what most others share?Does the content come from a credible source?Researchers think manipulating those factors could be key in getting people to share posts with misinformation and increase its organic reach.Experts think age is another factor in how misinformation spreads online.One study found people 65 and older shared seven times more misinformation on social media during the 2016 election cycle than the youngest age group studied. Researchers say a lack of digital media literacy in seniors could help explain the gap. LIVONIA, Mich. — A racially offensive history lesson involving slavery has a Detroit mother outraged and calling out her daughter’s school. The parent Livonia, Michigan says she’s speaking out so no other child has to go through a similar situation. Now, the school is issuing a statement of its own.The lesson came during a seventh-grade social studies lesson at Frost Middle School in Livonia that left student Jade Holt disgusted. “It was weird and uncomfortable,” Jade said. She said her course on the history of slavery included a question that read: “A slave stands before you. This slave has disrespected his master by telling him you are not my master. How will you punish this slave?”“I read the question and typed my answer. It was, 'there will be no punishment because I do not believe in slavery,'” Jade said. “I never want my daughter to feel that way again, the way she felt this morning,” Jade's mother Jaala Holt said.She believes the teacher also isn’t the only one to blame. “Everything has to be approved before it’s given to the children. So, for whomever approved this inappropriate question for seventh graders, I find it asinine for me,” Jaala said.A school spokesperson released the statement below, which read, in part:“Concerns from a parent were brought to our attention this morning, and we have reviewed a social studies assignment given to three classes of our seventh-grade students. We recognize the assignment in question was not constructed appropriately, as we believe in the importance of approaching topics of slavery in any era of world history with the utmost care and consideration.”The principal hasn’t said if anyone has been disciplined. LOS ANGELES (AP) — A judge has ordered the release of a Southern California man who spent 19 years in prison for a gang-related shooting. The judge on Friday approved a re-sentencing request from prosecutors for Emon Barnes. The 34-year-old Compton man is expected to be freed next week. Barnes was 15 when he was arrested for a Compton shooting. He was sentenced to 40 years to life for attempted murder. Barnes says he was home with his mother at the time of the shooting. A victim who identified him has since recanted. His attorneys say they will try to have his conviction vacated. 594

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - A storm system swollen with moisture from an atmospheric river will bring rain to Southern California Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a flash flood watch for all burn areas in Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara counties. Across Ventura and Los Angeles counties, the heaviest rainfall is expected late Tuesday and Wednesday morning, affecting the Thomas, Hill, Woolsey, Stone, South, Creek and La Tuna burn scars, according to the NWS. Peak rainfall rates are expected to range between a half-inch and 0.80 inches per hour. There is the potential for isolated thunderstorms, which could produce higher hourly rates, forecasters said. The flash flood watch will be in effect from 6 p.m. Tuesday until 11 a.m. Wednesday. LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Six Catholic dioceses across California, including Los Angeles and Orange, announced the creation today of a ``compensationalternative to pursuing lawsuits against the church.Diocese officials said the fund will be open to all clergy sex abuse victims, including people living in the country illegally and those who are barred from filing lawsuits because the abuse occurred long ago and is beyond the statute of limitations.``We have been providing pastoral care and financial support for victim-survivors here in the Archdiocese for many years,'' Los Angeles Diocese Archbishop Jose Gomez wrote in a letter to members of the diocese. ``We will continue to do so. But we also understand that some victim-survivors are reluctant to come to the church for assistance. Our hope with this new program is to give these people a chance to seek redress and healing through an independent program.''In addition to Los Angeles and Orange, other dioceses taking part in the program are San Bernardino, San Diego, Fresno and Sacramento -- collectively covering more than 10 million Catholics, or roughly 80 percent of the state's Catholics. Church officials noted that the compensation program will provide a ``non-adversarial'' process that protects victims' privacy -- unlike lawsuits.``Victim-survivors do not need to have a lawyer to participate and there are no fees for participating,'' according to a statement from church officials. ``Settlements for fully completed claims can be paid within 90 days.''Diocese officials also noted that the church itself will have no control over the program, which will be independently administered by mediators Kenneth Feinberg and Camille Biros, who already run similar programs in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Colorado. The California program will be overseen by a board that includes former Gov.
