SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Lifeguards in Pacific Beach are frustrated they being forced to spend less time monitoring the water and more time monitoring the trash left on their station.Not only do lifeguards at the station at the end of Grand Ave. has seen trash thrown onto the roof, clothing left behind, and even trash cans tossed on top of its flag pole."Cans, plastic bags, clothes, anything really that can be found on the boardwalk," says San Diego Lifeguard Sgt. Kerry Brown. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Malls across San Diego County did not experience the rush of last-minute shoppers on Christmas Eve, as the coronavirus continues to take its toll on the economy and life in general."We used to have to have the employees park in a different section that was further away so it left the open spots for customers, we haven't needed to do that this year," said Caitlin Todd, manager at Grossmont Center's Prevue Formal and Bridal.Todd said other than Target and Sees, the mall has been less busy this holiday season. She said it's not just the economy, but also that the coronavirus has made in-person shopping a more practical matter. "With restaurants not having as much ability to have indoor dining or outdoor dining, it's been more of a 'come, get what you need and leave,' kind of shopping experience, versus an all-day thing with the family," she said. The virus has taken a toll on the retail industry, with employment in department stores down 28% compared to the same time last year. Malls have instituted social distancing, limited entertainment, and retailers are limited to 20% capacity - meaning lines to get in. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - In recent weeks colorful bikes have filled the streets of San Diego. Dockless bike ridesharing companies were ready to go once the City Attorney's Office said they could operate. The city says LimeBike, Ofo, Mobike and Bird Scooter all have the proper licenses to operate here.LimeBike says in just two weeks they've logged 30,000 rides.The San Diego Bike Coalition supports the companies and believes the accessibility and affordability will help the city in its climate action plan. However, some residents have major concerns with the bikes, reporting that they're being left in the middle of sidewalks and on people's property. They've also witnessed scooter riders not wearing a helmet and people riding where they're not supposed to.Zack Bartlett, the general manager for LimeBike in San Diego, says they have an operations team patrolling the city 24/7 to run safety checks and reposition bikes improperly parked.
