As millions of Americans head to the polls today for the last day of voting, a group of artists has been deployed to help them pass the time. With a strum of her bow, violinist Paula Johannessen is off.“Some poll workers were really excited, too, that they were just happy to hear music,” said Johannessen. But today, her performance is dedicated to the American voter.“I played a lot of Irish music so far, and I'll continue to some jigs reels and waltzes,” she said. It’s called Play for the Vote, a non-partisan effort by artists and performers to bring music to the ballot box.“It's nice to remind people that we are still here, we're still performing, we're still here to share what we have with everybody,” explained Johannessen.Boston-based cellist Mike Block came up with the idea after the contentious first presidential debate.“I was just kind of thinking about what the candidates were saying about, not just who you should vote for, but the stress around the process of voting itself,” said Block. With long lines, health concerns, and the fate of the country hanging in the balance, Block decided musicians could help ease the anxiety.“I think it's also this is going to serve a very important need for audiences, said Block.“Music has this unique power to create shared unifying experiences and we haven't really had that this year.”He recruited 600 musicians to perform classical, folk, bluegrass, jazz, rock and more without a political leaning. They will play in 48 states and the District of Columbia. All of it is for voters stuck in long lines, fulfilling their civic duty.“It's always been a melting pot of music, as well as cultures here, and it's really cool just to be able to communicate with anyone anywhere through music,” said Johannessen.“I think encountering this at a voting location is really going to remind people of the culture and all of the things that bring us together in society,” said Block. It’s a good reminder of what we have in common today, no matter who we vote for. 2016

ATTICA, NY -- She has a vision for design and spent the last two months renovating her own camper-turned-tiny home called Camp Hygge. Her name is Lauren Nelson and she's 11 years old."I love this, I love renovating. I was very motivated with this camper, I really wanted a place where I could hang out . . . like my own house," said Nelson. Inside Lauren's renovated camper It all started when Lauren was flipping through the pages of an American Girl Doll magazine."She showed us a 0 little VW bus that they sell, my husband was like 'that's ridiculous, you could buy your own camper for that price,'" said Aimee Nelson, her mother. So she did just that. She saved up some money and started looking for her camper. A neighbor just down the street had one that piqued her interest. Lauren renovated the camper with help from family and friends "And then one day, up popped a for sale sign and she squealed the whole way home," said her mother. She then started negotiating. She had saved up 0 between the money she would have used to go to 4-H camp and some that she raised at garage sales."It wasn't very hard. He said 0 and I said 0 because that was the money I had in my bank account and he said sold," said Nelson. Then it was time to renovate, which wasn't easy. There was a lot of deep cleaning and they even found a family of mice, but that didn't stop her. The renovation only cost her around 0, her mother says she was frugal when shopping with a vision for her Beachy Boho-themed camper."She has three envelopes that she puts her money in, give save and spend and I think she made a really good choice. She now says she's part of the tiny home nation."Lauren was inspired by HGTV's Tiny House Hunters. She researched on Pinterest and got the name, Camp Hygge, from a Simplisafe TV commercial."It means very comfortable and safe. It has its own kitchen and bathroom," said Nelson. Lauren spends 5 days a week in her new camper Now she spends five days a week in her camper. She was able to turn her summer around and hopes to inspire others to do the same. Aimee says they've already received messages from others who have done the same thing after hearing about Camp Hygge."If you're looking to have some big plans in the future, you should go out and do it. Make it happen," said Nelson.Lauren hopes to have a career in home renovation or forensic science, maybe both, she says. This story was first reported by Taylor Epps at WKBW in Buffalo, New York. 2608

At Allan Hancock College’s Fire Academy, Battalion 146 recently went through some intense rescue scenarios.“Help a brother out. Come on,” shouted an instructor. The person responsible for training the future firefighters is academy coordinator Andy Densmore, who has been in this industry for almost four decades and is retiring at the end of this year.“There’s nothing you can do about it,” he said. “We have to make the change.”Changes due to COVID-19.Since the pandemic hit, academy class sizes have been cut by a third, cadets are screened before they enter the facilities, they socially distance themselves once they’re in and wear masks when they’re not in face pieces.“The nice part is we asked these kids for their commitment the first day that we meet them and we said, ‘there’s only one variable in this entire program and it’s you,’” Densmore said.As Densmore’s career comes to a close during this crisis, Camila Schafer, class president of Battalion 146, is just starting hers.“Whether it’s a pandemic, it’s a fire, it’s a surf rescue, we’ll answer that call,” she said.Schafer says instructors can control all aspects of a cadet’s day while on campus but once they leave the academy, however, cadets are committed to an individual responsibility.“On weekends, we’re studying. we’re hitting the books,” she said. “We’re making sure that we’re not out there putting our battalion in jeopardy and possibly getting this virus.”Employment of firefighters is projected to grow faster than the average for all occupations across the country, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistcs. While this fire academy is training with new challenges, Densmore believes smaller class sizes could make cadets like Schafer better prepared than firefighters of the past.“We don’t graduate mediocre,” he said. “Our standards are really, really high. And we exceed what the state requires." 1888

At least two sheriff's offices in Florida are investigating after voters in the state say they received threatening messages from people claiming to be affiliated with the Proud Boys that attempt to scare voters into voting for President Donald Trump.According to Florida Today, the emails sent to voters followed a similar format: The sender claimed to be in possession of personal information because they "gained access" to the "entire voting infrastructure." The message then says the voter must "vote for Trump on Election Day or we will come after you."Florida Today reports that the Brevard Supervisor of Elections has reported the messages to local law enforcement. In a Facebook post, the sheriff of Alachua County, located several hours northwest of Brevard County, said it was investigating similar messages with assistance from federal law enforcement. 872
