SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - One month after a scooter accident nearly killed his wife, a Chula Vista man says she's pulling through. Dean Riggott says he watched as his wife Karen fell off a Bird scooter, her head crashing into the pavement. "She hit the back of her head with such force and ferocity, that scooter threw her with such force, that she only hit the back of her head, and broke the bones all the way around the side of her face to the front of her eyes, above her eyes," said Dean.Doctors told Dean to expect the worse, that she would likely not survive the head trauma."I cry literally every morning, every morning."But Dean says his wife is a force of nature and is now defying the odds."She can open her eyes, and she can even smile if you let her know you're in the room, and you're here for her."Karen has some movement in her arms and legs but still cannot support herself. "Unfortunately the families who's lives have been damaged by these scooters, it's going to be a reminder and a remainder in their life for a long, long time," said Dean. While Dean's focus is on his wife's recovery, he can't help but warn others about the dangers of scooters."It's pretty simple. When people are dying, something is wrong."He's reached out to all nine city council members asking for help; so far only three have responded to his pleas for action against scooter companies. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - One man is dead and another injured after a shooting in City Heights Saturday night. 31-year old Dionte Floyd was killed and 38-year old Dashe Wallace was seriously injured, police said. Wallace's condition was unknown as of Sunday afternoon.According to police, the shooting happened around 6 p.m. on the corner of El Cajon Boulevard and 52nd Street. Police said two groups were involved in a fight when someone started shooting. Two of the men were shot several times before the suspects left the area. Police are reviewing surveillance footage to try to figure out what happened and find the suspects involved. 641

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Nearly 140 pounds of liquid methamphetamine and two pounds of heroin were discovered inside a vehicle’s gas tank and spare tire at the Otay Mesa Port of Entry Monday, U.S. Customs and Border Protection says.According to the agency, the drugs were discovered after a detector dog alerted officers to the undercarriage of the vehicle around 4:30 a.m. Monday.Following the alert, officers guided the driver, a 52-year-old woman who is a citizen of Mexico and lawful U.S. resident, to a secure location for inspection.RELATED: Previously-deported sex offender arrested by Border Patrol in San DiegoThat’s when, according to CBP, officers found the drugs hidden inside the gas tank and spare tire.The driver was turned over to agents with Homeland Security Investigations while a 71-year-old female passenger was released.The narcotics are estimated to have a value of 5,000. 901

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Puerto Ricans are living in fear after hundreds of earthquakes rocked the region, according to a San Diegan with family there.Tommy Rosas last lived on the island when he was 14. Though he moved to the mainland, Puerto Rico never left him."It hurts," he said sadly, "every minute of the day, I walk, breathe, sweat, cry Puerto Rico."He's been hurting more for his home since 2017, when Hurricane Maria hit. "My family moved, with the exception of a couple cousins who live in Cabo Rojo." He said it was too much to start over an most of his family moved to the states."The electrical grid is ancient, and it has to be repaired. They started the repairs little by little, then the earthquakes hit," saying in frustration, "whats next? What did Puerto Ricans do to deserve this?"The shaking started December 28th, the biggest quake struck January 7th, registering a magnitude 6.4."There's thousands of people living on the streets, because of their homes being destroyed or they're afraid of their home collapsing on top of them." Rosas said friends described the desperate living conditions through social media.Rosas gave a friend a flash light as a gift before he went to Puerto Rico a few months back. He said it was a joke, but now that friend now using it regularly, "he's in Isla Verde, so they lost power there, and it's periodically, it comes and goes. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- One man is behind bars after a series of events in Rancho Penasquitos, including nearly running over a firefighter. Around 2:30 p.m. California Highway Patrol received a report of a reckless vehicle on SR-76 near Cole Grade Road Monday. The blue Toyota RAV4 was reported after unsafely passing vehicles and speeding in the area. Shortly after, CHP reported that the driver - Falahi Abrahim - was involved in a crash and started a brush fire.Shortly after Cal Fire responded to the fire, 37-year-old Abrahim from fled the scene - nearly hitting the firefighter who was trying to help him.Police officers followed, but Abrahim refused to stop and a pursuit began. The pursuit continued westbound on SR-76 to I-15 and transitioned to I-15 Southbound. The vehicle continued to flee from officers on I-15 Southbound and exited the freeway at Camino Del Norte where the vehicle progressed eastbound.During the chase Abrahim failed to stop for two red lights at separate intersections and officers discontinued the pursuit in the interest of public safety.A San Diego Police Department helicopter continued to follow the car, communicating Abrahim's location to the CHP. At 3:11 p.m. the driver stopped near the 10000 block of Carmel Mountain Road. After a short foot pursuit, Abrahim was taken into custody and arrested under suspicion of driving under the influence of a drug and felony evading charges.The incident involving the assault of the firefighter at the collision scene is still under investigation. 1572
