SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — An apparent SDG&E scam reported by a North County couple turned out to be an actual warning to evacuate, just not for them.The power company is calling a recent interaction with a Poway family a "misunderstanding," after the family believed they had been scammed by someone posing as the company.The Chavez family told 10News this week they received a phone call from someone saying they worked for SDG&E, telling them they needed to evacuate their home while work was being using a helicopter.The message said, “it requires a helicopter. The helicopter is required from the FAA to have certain properties, like yourself, evacuate the home.”ORIGINAL STORY: Family urging San Diegans to be aware of a possible new SDG&E scamAfter calling SDG&E to confirm, they were told there was no work going on in their area. The family believed they had been scammed. But it turns out, the phone call was true — for a different neighborhood.According to SDG&E, FAA does require residents to leave their homes when work is being done in their area requiring a helicopter and special construction.However, when the Chavez family called SDG&E, they didn't use the number the original caller provided. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A YouTube video of a community college police officer who drew his gun on a San Diego man carrying a camera Wednesday is going viral.The video shows the Mesa College police officer getting out of his car and asking Chris, the man with two cameras, what he was filming.Chris, who did not want to provide his last name, refused to put down the GoPro camera. Within seconds, the officer took his weapon out of the holster. The officer did not put his gun back in the holster until a second officer arrived.Chris is the founder of California Citizens Watch, a group that audits government entities. He told 10News reporter Allison Ash he was not trying to provoke the officer into pulling his gun.Watch the confrontation: 10News spoke with former El Cajon police officer Kevin LaChapelle who said he believes Chris was definitely out for a confrontation. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A woman's trip to Mission Bay ended with her, and her car, soaked.The woman, who identified herself as Candy, said she was next to her car on a boat ramp preparing to unload her kayak for a day of fishing and roaming around Mission Bay. Suddenly, her 2002 Audi convertible started rolling as she was unloading gear.Candy jumped into the car and road it into the bay as she tried to get her emergency brake to engage."It just wouldn't. It just kept on going," Candy told 10News. "I was standing straight up in it as it was going down ... quite a scene, I'm sure."The car started sinking into the bay with Candy still inside, before she jumped out to swim back to shore. Her lunch and kayak floated to the other side of the bay as her car became completely submerged, she told 10News."I'm going to have plenty of fish now," she joked. "It's not a big deal, things happen."Two tow trucks were able to fish Candy's vehicle out of the bay and San Diego Lifeguards retrieved her car and kayak, in which she had left her purse and lunch.Candy said she had just purchased the car in November.San Diego Lifeguards reminded locals to exercise caution while using boat ramps. 1216

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An investigation is underway to find the driver in a hit-and-run crash that injured two passengers in City Heights.Police say the female driver crashed into multiple parked cars on Fairmount Avenue just after midnight on Wednesday.Witnesses told police they heard the crash, and then saw the driver jump out of the car and run, leaving the two female passengers behind.Both women managed to crawl out of the mangled car with the help of nearby neighbors. One of the passengers was seriously injured, but neighbors say they kept her calm and stable until paramedics arrived.Police are investigating what led up to the crash.This is a developing story stay with ABC 10news for updates. 711

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A winter storm warning was issued for San Diego County’s mountains as a cold storm hit the region Monday..The warning is in place from 8 a.m. Monday through 4 a.m. Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.“The agency says heavy snow and strong winds are expected. Plan on difficult travel conditions, including during the evening commute on Monday. Tree branches could fall as well,” forecasters said.Total snow accumulations of two to six inches are expected with localized amounts of 12 to 18 inches. The heaviest snow is expected to impact areas above 5,500 feet, however, some snow is expected down to 4,500 feet.Accompanying the snow are heavy winds of 20 to 40 miles per hour.RELATED: Check today's forecast in your area“If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency,” the National Weather Service advised.A high surf advisory also takes the place of a beach hazards statement as the storm approaches. The advisory is in effect from 6 a.m. Sunday through 10 a.m. Wednesday for San Diego County coastal areas.Surf begins to build Sunday, peaking Monday afternoon through Tuesday, the agency says. Waves and surf of three to six feet are expected Sunday, increasing to four to seven feet with sets to eight feet by Monday.Accompanying the high surf is a slight chance of isolated thunderstorms and lighting at the beaches Monday, the National Weather Service said.Coastal areas could also see nearly an inch of rain as the storm passes. 1533
