(KGTV) - A baby badger, once lethargic and in need of care, is recovering after treatment at the San Diego Humane Society’s Project Wildlife Center. The Department of Animal Services got a call Thursday about the badger in the Jewel Valley section of Boulevard in East San Diego County. The caller told animal experts the badger had not moved all day. An animal control officer responded to the scene and found the badger to be lethargic. The officer took the animal to the Humane Society facility on Gaines Street in Mission Valley for treatment. Veterinarians are bottle-feeding the badger, which weighs about two pounds, according to animal care expert Lauren DuBois. When the badger reaches adulthood, its diet will consist of small animals including ground squirrels and pocket gophers. DuBois said the badger will possibly be released to Fund for Animals in Ramona. Badgers can be aggressive and require ample space, according to DuBois. By Friday morning, Dan DeSousa, Director of Animal Services reported “the badger is doing well and is feisty.” Badgers, though rarely seen in San Diego, are native to the area, according to wildlife experts. “In my thirty years with Animal Services here in San Diego County, this is the first badger that our Department has ever encountered” said DeSousa. “We are thankful to have Project Wildlife here in our community to provide the needed care for these animals in their time of need.” Anyone who encounters a wild animal in distress can call 619-299-7012 to report the matter. 1532

(KGTV) - Authorities in Northern California have issued an arrest warrant for a former Southwestern College football player after he failed to appear in court in a sexual assault case.The Humboldt County Sheriff's Office said 25-year-old Raul Sierra failed to show up for two hearings, including one on March 7.The former Southwestern College and Humboldt State University student-athlete was arrested in 2016 for a sexual assault that officials say occurred in a campus residence hall at HSU in 2015.Sierra was charged originally with acquaintance rape “by use of drugs” in 2016 after taking a plea bargain. However, subsequent court records show that Sierra pleaded no contest to lesser charges of felony false imprisonment and misdemeanor assault in 2016.Court records show that Sierra is supposed to serve community service and undergo counseling through a court program.Sierra attended Castle Park High school before playing at Southwestern College and walking-on at Humboldt State University. 1031

Gavin Newsom signs a bill passed by the state Senate Friday, state university clinics will be required to offer abortion pills to students as of 2023."The state has an interest in ensuring that every pregnant person in California who wants to have an abortion can obtain access to that care as easily and as early in pregnancy as possible," the bill states.California's legislation comes as several other states are moving to tighten abortion restrictions or to ban them with very limited exceptions."In a time when states across our country are rolling back women's health care and access to abortion, California continues to lead the nation to protect every individual's right to choose," Sen. Connie Leyva, who authored the bill, said in a statement. "SB 24 reaffirms the right of every college student to access abortion."Giving students access to abortion by medication means students won't have to "choose between delaying important medical care or having to travel long distances or miss classes or work," Leyva said.If it becomes law, the initiative would be funded by "nonstate entities, including, but not necessarily limited to, private sector entities and local and federal government agencies," the bill says.There are more than 400,000 women students at California's state university campuses, according to the bill.Former California Gov. Butler is a code compliance officer for San Diego Fire-Rescue and makes sure brush surrounding homes is not out of control. “It’s the hillside we’re really concerned about, the canyon rim location,” Butler said. It is Wildfire Awareness Week in California. Assistant Fire Marshal Eddie Villavicencio said approximately 40,500 homes in San Diego are canyon rim properties, next to native or naturalized vegetation.
