SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- Google announced Wednesday that Google Earth, the tech giant's virtual globe, map and geographical information program, has been downloaded more than one billion times since it was first introduced in 2005.According to Google's official blog, there have been more than one billion downloads of the Google Earth desktop client, mobile apps and the Google Earth plug-in. To celebrate the milestone, Google is aggregating all the interesting ways people have used Google Earth around the world and posting them on "www. ISLAMABAD, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- Pakistan ranks the seventh in the world in terms of diabetes prevalence rate and over 7.1 million people in the country are diabetes patients, reported local media on Monday.Quoting a report by the World International Diabetes Federation, a local English newspaper "The News" said that every year 89,000 people die of diabetes in Pakistan and the number of diabetes patients in the country could hit 11.5 million by the year 2025 if proper measures were not taken.This would make Pakistan the world's fifth largest country in terms of its number of diabetes patients 14 years later, warned the report.At a seminar organized Monday in Islamabad to observe the World Diabetes Day which falls on Nov. 14, Dr. Abdus Salam from Shifa International Hospital, a private-run hospital in the capital city, said that every ten seconds, two people are diagnosed with diabetes and one person dies of diabetes-related causes.The average age of diabetes patients in Pakistan is one of the lowest in the world, said the report. Deserts are usually regarded as the hotbeds for capturing solar power, but some of the loftiest and coldest regions can receive more energy from the sun than some deserts, said Takashi Oozeki and Yutaka Genchi, authors of the research published in Environmental Science and Technology. To set up solar cells on Himalayas would be challenging. Transmission losses and snowfall should be taken into consideration, said the researchers with the National Institute of Industrial Science and Technology in Japan. Still, the Himalayan region is attractive, because there are large energy demands in the countries nearby."It is near regions with large future energy demands such as China and India," they said.Other cold regions that can receive solar power include Andes of South America and Antarctica, according to the study.

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) -- Logitech, a provider of personal peripherals for computers and other digital platforms, said its production of Google TV was a "big mistake," giving a major blow to Google's aspiration to change the traditional TV experience, U.S. media reported on Friday.According to technology news site The Verge, at a recent analyst and investor meeting, Logitech chief executive officer Guerrino De Luca said the launch of Logitech Revue (with Google TV set-top box) last year was "a mistake of implementation of a gigantic nature."The project cost the company more than 100 million U.S. dollars in operating profit.He said the company had "brought closure to the Logitech Revue saga" and has "no plans to introduce another box to replace Revue" after the inventory runs out this quarter.The CEO also predicted that Google TV will have a chance sometime in the future, but it would be a "grandchild of Google TV " that would do it. Logitech has no plans to help make that happen.Launched during the holiday shopping season last year, the Logitech Revue with Google TV system was criticized for being pricey and unpolished although it gives consumers a streamlined experience of traditional TV content and online media. In August, Logitech slashed the price from 249 dollars to 99 dollars.Last month, Google introduced a redesigned Google TV after sales of the first version did not meet expectations.In April, Logitech reported that Revue with Google TV set-top box and related gear only brought five million dollars in sales during the first quarter of this year, 72 percent less than the company had expected.However, support from some leading TV manufacturers may still help Google fulfill its TV plan.
