San Diego (KGTV)- In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, hundreds are giving back in the best way they can. This morning volunteers rolled up their sleeves to clean up Balboa Park. 14-year-old Maya Hundley spent the morning planting flowers with her family at the MLK Day of Service Interfaith Project. "I think it's important any day to help out, especially today," says Hundley. "Instead of being lazy or taking it as an extra day off, you can use that time to make a difference in the world." More than 300 volunteers spent the morning cleaning up Balboa Park. "People are doing anything from planting trees and flowers to raking leaves and hauling brush," says Melissa Spence with First United Methodist Church of San Diego. The city's parks and recreation department was on hand, showing volunteers which areas needed the most care. The MLK Day of Service Interfaith Project includes Christians, Jews, Muslims, and Unitarians working together. This is the 11th year the group has come together for the event. "As people of different faiths, we recognize that God gave us this earth we're being called to care for it in the best way that we can," says Spence. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Neighbors are shaken up after a home invasion in University City. “I wouldn’t have expected it because I feel like this area UTC especially is pretty safe,” says neighbor Alana Schnoor. San Diego police got the call early Monday morning, around 1 a.m, from the home in the 5300 block of Toscana Way.Two men wearing masks went inside of an unlocked apartment. One of them pointed a gun at the people inside, while the other grabbed phones and laptops. Police say one of the victims grabbed the gun and fought the robber. The intruder hit the man with the weapon, and both robbers ran out. “It’s a safe area. I just wouldn’t have expected someone with a gun going into an apartment like that,” said neighbor Amy Kaido. Police say the intruders were wearing green jackets with black stripes and black pants. Both men were in their 20’s. 860

SAN DIGEO (KGTV) - The number of calls to San Diego County’s Child Abuse Hotline has dropped by more than half since schools across the region closed to prevent the spread of the coronavirus disease.County data provided to 10News shows a more than 50 percent decrease in calls regarding allegations of child abuse or neglect.According to the county, for the week of March 9 to 15, there were 1,859 calls. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — After successive years of devastating wildfires, California's fire agency announced a plan Tuesday that would dramatically increase logging and other forest management efforts with the help of the National Guard.The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection released a list of 35 priority fuel-reduction projects it wants to start immediately across the state over roughly 90,000 acres. That's double the acreage the agency aimed to cover in the current fiscal year, CalFire Deputy Chief Scott McLean said.The agency is also seeking National Guard assistance to coordinate the work. They include work around the city of Redding, which was also devastated by wildfire last year, and in Butte County, where Paradise is located.An estimated 15 million acres of forest land in California are in need of thinning or other restoration work, so the 35 projects are just a start, Calfire officials said.
