SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Dockless scooter users can now ride without a helmet as long as they are over the age of 18. A new law signed by Governor Jerry Brown went into effect January 1 lifting the helmet requirement for adult scooter users. AB 2989 removes the mandate for riders of motorized scooters to wear a bicycle helmet as long they are older than 18. It also forbids riding a motorized scooter on highways with a speed limit greater than 25 mph and roads with a speed limit greater than 35 mph, unless there is a marked bikeway. DUI laws still apply to scooter users and riders must have a valid driver’s license or permit. Helmets are required for those under the age of 18. People can still be cited for lying the scooter down on a sidewalk to impede traffic or riding scooter with a passenger. 807

San Diego (KGTV) -- Hotel guest jolted awake after the Howard Johnson by Wyndham caught fire, early Tuesday morning.The fire erupted around 4:15 a.m. on El Cajon Blvd in the College East neighborhood.One of the rooms was destroyed, and two others were severely damaged, according to firefighters. At least 4 to 5 units are reported to be uninhabitable for various reasons.It took about 20 minutes to knock down the fire.One man staying in the unit right next to the fire, told ABC 10News he had to run right past the flames to escape.The entire hotel was evacuated, and everyone managed to get out safely. No one was hurt.Firefighters are trying to figure out if anyone was inside the unit when it caught fire. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Extended construction work next to Friars Road has drivers wondering when the Mission Valley street will be back to normal.What is normally a four-lane road is now two, as SANDAG completes an million project. Crews are taking out a bridge with one track on it and replacing it with three bridges and four tracks. Two tracks will serve the Coaster and heavy freight trains. The other tracks are for the blue line trolley to La Jolla. “Every day that I have to pass this, it's just an eyesore,” said Katherine Whitley, who has spent two years driving through construction. “It clogs traffic. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Homeowners in La Mesa are being warned their houses could be at risk of a destructive pest: Formosan subterranean termites.San Diego-based company Thrasher Termite & Pest Control made the unfortunate discovery this month in a La Mesa home."Unlike native subterranean termites, the termites we observed were extremely active, didn't flee when disturbed, and the soldiers went into attack mode. They had hollowed out large areas of structural wood, always staying just beneath the exterior paint and unnoticed by the homeowner," said Garrett Thrasher.They're deemed "super-termites" due to enormous colonies up to two million strong. The pests can cause significant structural damage within six months unlike traditional dry-wood termites, which take 10-15 years to do similar damage.RELATED: Heat and humidity creating perfect conditions for bugsThe invasive species of termites was first discovered in La Mesa in 1992. Efforts to eradicate the population were thought to be successful, but pest control experts say that's no longer the case. Years after the discovery, monitoring efforts eventually stopped due to a lack of funding."They can't fly very far, but there's so many of them that they've continued to survive since the last sighting," said Thrasher.About 60 homeowners have received letters from San Diego County officials warning of potential risk.Thrasher says it's hard to say how large the problem is but he believes the pests have a strong foothold in the area.According to the University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources, the 1992 Formosan subterranean termite infestation was estimated to be about ten years old. This age corresponds to a time that a family living at the epicenter of the affected area brought wood and potted plants with them when they moved to La Mesa from Hawaii.
