GUIYANG, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- China Wednesday called for the European Union to have a balanced, objective, comprehensive understanding of the world's largest developing country during an upgraded strategic dialogue held in the underdeveloped province of Guizhou.State Councilor Dai Bingguo told the EU side that despite rapid economic growth, China has no possibility to be arrogant, nor is it pretending to be a richer or poorer country than it actually is, with unfathomable strategic intentions, according to Vice Foreign Minister Fu Ying."China expects the EU to treat itself as an equal," Dai was quoted by Fu as telling EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton.The meeting was the fifth strategic dialogue between the two sides and the first since it was upgraded from vice foreign-minister level to its current level.China had made remarkable achievements since its reform and opening up to the outside, but it is still a developing country, Dai said.China has a clear understanding of its position in the international arena and its current level of development, Dai said, adding it will focus on economic development in the long run.China has not been, nor is, nor will be in the pursuit of hegemony, but adheres to the path of peaceful development, Dai said.China needs a peaceful international environment for development and its development will promote global peace and development, he said.Ashton echoed Dai, saying that the European Union should have a comprehensive understanding of China.The EU's view of China's development was one topic of the one-day closed-door meeting."It is one major aim of this strategic dialogue to enhance mutual understanding between China and the European Union. Both sides have a strong will to better understand each other and promote political mutual trust, so as to promote bilateral cooperation," said Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Fu Ying in an interview with Xinhua.The two sides also discussed the international situation and the development of the China-EU relationship.On the international situation, China urged all countries to join hands to cope with global challenges.On China-EU relations, China said it supports EU integration. BEIJING, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- U.S. probe into Chinese clean energy policies, dubbed Section 301, will harm the United States itself by revealing more of its own subsidies to new energy businesses, Zhang Guobao, head of the National Energy Bureau, said Sunday evening.The U.S. Trade Representative's office started the investigation on Oct. 15 in response to the United Steelworkers Union's complaint on Sept. 9 that China's support for its renewable energy industries gave Chinese producers unfair edges over competitors."Chinese subsidies to new energies companies are very small, but the United States had subsidized the new energy enterprises with 4.6 billion U.S. dollars in cash in the first nine months of 2010, including 3 billion U.S. dollars to wind power enterprises," Zhang said.Zhang rejected charges that China's wind power bid prefers Chinese enterprises and has discriminated against foreign companies."China has no discriminatory items on new energy equipment producers," Zhang said.Many foreign wind power equipment producers participated in bidding in China and some won biddings from 2003 to 2005, Zhang said.But chances for them to win have been dropping as they offer prices much higher than the Chinese companies, Zhang said."In contrast to China's open attitude, the United States issued a bill in 2009 to subsidize renewable energies, energy efficiency and smart power grid sectors. The U.S. General Electric Company, however, exported 80,000 kw of wind turbines to China in 2005 and the figure increased to about 340,000 kw in 2009," Zhang said, adding that its total wind turbine exports to China topped 1.13 million kw in the past five years."China's wind power (equipment) market stood at 85 billion yuan in 2009, about 21 percent of which was imported from overseas," Zhang said, adding that it showed China's wind power provided large opportunities for foreign producers to send exports to China.China and the United States should carry out dialogues in new energy sectors, Zhang said.The United States had proposed to communicate through video meetings on Oct. 12 with China on new energy products, but it also had been postponing the dialogue before declaring the probe on Oct. 15."I was very much astonished at it, wondering what the United States wants. BEIJING, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- Shanghai Pudong Development (SPD) Bank said its first-half-year net profit rose 33.92 percent from one year earlier due largely to lending boom and increased commission fees.Net profits climbed to 9.08 billion yuan (1.34 billion U.S. dollars) in the first six months of this year, the Shanghai-based lender said in a statement filed with the Shanghai Stock Exchange late Sunday.Its growth in profits stemmed from rising operating revenues, a result of growing net interest earnings, increased fee incomes and the improved quality of assets, according to the statement.Earnings per share stood at 0.791 yuan, up 20.21 percent from one year earlier. Also, operating revenues grew 36.42 percent to 22.75 billion yuan in the first half of 2010, it said.Total assets for the commercial bank hit 1.781 trillion yuan by the end of June, up 9.77 percent from the end of 2009.
