SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Just a few weeks ago, coronavirus testing was hard to come by. But now, many San Diegans are finding it easier to get tested. Some are purchasing at-home test kits online, at no up-front cost.Raechel Kadoya is not a clinician, nor is she at a doctor's office. She is the co-owner of Soichi Sushi, giving herself a COVID-19 test."I want to take advantage of being proactive," Kadoya said as she swabbed her nose.Since the modified re-opening of her restaurant in University Heights, she and her staff have been cautious about coronavirus exposure. That is why she ordered the Pixel by Labcorp at-home COVID-19 test kit for her entire staff."I think that it is my responsibility as a business owner, not only to my staff but to my customers and my family, to make sure that everybody is doing business here safely," Kadoya said. This is the staff's second round of testing. Kadoya said the first one required multiple doctors referrals just to get a drive-through appointment an hour away."We were able to find a place in Lake Elsinore, so we all had to drive up there," Kadoya said.Dr. Abi Olulade, a family medicine physician at Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Group, said the accessibility of these at-home tests is a big draw."It definitely is something that is very convenient for consumers," Dr. Olulade said. But she suggested customers do their homework before they order."They should be looking at whether or not the tests that they are using have been FDA authorized, and it's not just some random test that they found on the internet," Dr. Olulade said.As of June 12, 2020, seven at-home COVID-19 test kits have the FDA's emergency use authorization. They are:Phosphorus DiagnosticsPrivapathP23 LabsEverlywellRutgers University LabQuest DiagnosticsLabcorpTo get this authorization, the FDA requires at-home tests to have 95% accuracy in detecting positive results and 100% accuracy in detecting negative results.Insurance covered the upfront costs for Kadyoa's staff. But for those without insurance, some tests are covered by federal funds. From an accessibility and affordability stand-point, Kadoya said this is what works best for her."I want to do this every couple of weeks as maintenance," Kadoya said.Dr. Olulade also said to make sure the labs doing the testing also have CLIA certification, which sets national standards for accuracy, quality, and reliability. 2397

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It has been yet another wild week of political news in San Diego. Congressman Duncan Hunter dominated our coverage for most of the week, and when accusations of misuse of campaign funds broke, we had an opportunity to get his side of the story from his father, former Congressman Duncan Lee Hunter. That did not sit well with some of our viewers. And for the first time, we were called "Fake News" from the left. Take a look for yourself in this week's Let's Talk. RELATED:  511

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Kelvin Barrios, a candidate for the San Diego City Council's 9th District, has announced he has contracted coronavirus."After being hospitalized two days ago, I have tested positive for COVID-19," Barrios said in a Facebook post. "While I have been following all social distancing and self-isolation recommendations, I had what I thought was a normal flu for about a week," he said.Barrios described feeling "bad body aches, sweating, headaches, labored breathing, high blood pressure, and an elevated heart rate.""I strongly urge everyone to practice social distancing and stay safe and healthy during these times," he said. 652

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- In the wake of this summer's protests over racial inequality, a high school athletic director from San Diego is trying to change a system he says doesn't have enough minority representation.Francis Parker AD Anthony Thomas started NOMAD, the National Organization of Minority Athletic Directors."We have to get comfortable being uncomfortable," says Thomas. "And we have to have difficult conversations within our community."Thomas began the organization with three other AD's from Oakland, Minneapolis, and Richmond, Virginia. They say NOMAD will guide and mentor minority coaches, athletes, and administrators who want to further their careers.Thomas says seeing the racial unrest in the wake of George Floyd's death was a turning point."I saw myself under that knee. I saw my student-athletes under that knee. I saw my nephew under that knee. So it was really a call to action," says Thomas.Thomas' school plays in the Coastal Conference. He noticed that only two of its 18 schools have black athletic directors. Thomas saw similar numbers across the state and country but couldn't find any specific data because no one had been tracking it yet on the high school level."You have to lead by example," says Thomas. "That's what we decided to do as Nomad is to get out ahead of it, and no longer wait, no longer be complicit."In its first five months, NOMAD has grown to more than 200 members. They've already held a handful of virtual webinars teaching people how to advance their careers in athletics. Thomas wants to make sure everyone has representation and opportunity."The data tells a story," says Thomas. "There's not a lot of opportunities for underrepresented people to become athletic directors, and we would like to see that change in the best way possible. And we want to facilitate hoping in that shift."Thomas thinks this can also help students by giving minority athletes people they can look up to who also look like them.He says NOMAD can also help guide conversations between players and coaches of different ethnic and racial groups that intersect in sports."This job is not about color. It's not about ethnicity. It's about passion. It's about loving kids. And that's what we want to do," he says. "But we also recognize that our leadership in every aspect needs to reflect its community." 2338
