DAMASCUS, June 29 (Xinhua) -- China's new special envoy to the Middle East Wu Sike said on Monday in an interview with Xinhua that the concerning parties of the Mideast peace process should hold confidence to make progress.     Wu, who arrived in Damascus on Monday, starting the fifth leg of his first visit to the Middle East as China's new special envoy.     After meeting with Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Mualem and Vice President Faruk Shareh, he told Xinhua that Syria and China has enjoyed good bilateral relationships and Syria appreciates China's role in the region and the Mideast peace process. BEIJING, July 4 (Xinhua) -- Former Chinese Vice Premier Zeng Peiyan on Saturday called for the whole world to work together to seek reforms in financial supervision, boost economic restructuring and build a green economy.     The present financial crisis has revealed deep-rooted structural imbalance within the traditional economy and developing pattern, and the world should focus on solving such issues in the post-crisis era, he told Xinhua during an exclusive interview at the Global Think Tank Summit.     The international community should jointly improve the global financial supervision system with generally-accepted regulatory standards to monitor and intervene on possible systematic risks as early as possible, Zeng said.     The international currency system should be reformed into a steady, foreseeable and diversified one, and it is necessary to set supervision on the financial stability of nations of major reserve currencies, he told Xinhua.     It would take a long time to carry out the global economic restructuring and solve the imbalances between consumption and savings, he said, adding that such a move needs efforts from both developed countries and developing ones.     Zeng called on developed countries to help developing countries by improving their external environment for economic development, as developing countries have already become the biggest victims of the present crisis.     Zeng also called for more international cooperation in building a green economy, as developing countries need technical and financial support from developed countries to avoid wasting resources and destroying the environment while seeking economic revival.     The summit, which concluded on Saturday, is organized by the China Center for International Economic Exchanges (CCIEE), a non-governmental research and consulting organization created this March, with Zeng as its director.     The three-day summit had attracted over 900 scholars, experts and business leaders from all over the world, including former President of the European Commission Romano Prodi and former Secretary of State of the United States Henry Kissinger

SHIJIAZHUANG, May 12 (Xinhua) -- The brand of Sanlu Group, the dairy company embroiled in China's tainted-milk scandal, was sold at an auction Tuesday for 7.3 million yuan (1.07 million U.S. dollars), court officials said.     An unidentified individual entrepreneur from south China won the bid at an auction in the Shijiazhuang Intermediate People's Court in northern Hebei Province. No further information about the bidder was released.     The auction started at 7 million yuan and drew three bids from only two bidders.     The "Sanlu" brand was worth 14.9 billion yuan in 2006, according to the China Brand Asset Evaluation Center.     Sanlu Group, which was based in Shijiazhuang, had been China's leading seller of milk powder for 15 years until the melamine adulteration scandal broke last September. The group's revenue hit 10 billion yuan in 2007.     The company's tainted baby milk powder was found to have caused the deaths of at least six children and sickened more than 300,000others.     Beijing-based dairy producer Sanyuan bought the core assets of Sanlu, which went bankrupt in February, for 616.5 million yuan at an auction on March 4.     Also Tuesday, Sanlu sold 51-percent stakes in three dairy companies for 22.8 million yuan. The purchasers' identities were not immediately known.     But it failed to sell 51 percent stakes in another two dairy firms and withdrew 12 patent techniques from auction.     The bankruptcy trustee is to announce plans to dispose of Sanlu's last remaining assets, which include a 51-percent stake in a third dairy firm in Hebei's Baoding City

WASHINGTON, April 25 (Xinhua) -- Zhou Xiaochuan, governor of the People's Bank of China, said on Saturday that positive changes have taken place in the Chinese economy, whose overall performance is better than expected.     "Facing the impact of the financial crisis, the Chinese government has promptly introduced a policy package to expand domestic demand and maintain financial stability, striving to respond to the impact of the financial crisis," said Zhou at the International Monetary and Financial Committee (IMFC) meeting held here on Saturday.
