QINGDAO, April 20 (Xinhua) -- China's senior navy officer said here Monday that the international fleet review to be held in east port city Qingdao on Thursday is aimed at promoting understanding about China's military development.     Ding Yiping, deputy commander of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy, told Xinhua in an exclusive interview that the review would serve as a platform for navies from other countries to increase their understanding about China and the Chinese navy. China's People's Liberation Army (PLA) kicks off a grand maritime ceremony to mark the 60th anniversary of its navy at 6 p.m. Monday off the coast of the eastern city of Qingdao,China's Shandong Province, April 20, 2009    "Suspicions about China being a 'threat' to world security are mostly because of misunderstandings and lack of understandings about China," Ding said.     "The suspicions would disappear if foreign counterparts could visit the Chinese navy and know about the true situations."     Ding also said the review is expected to build a platform for navies from different countries to enhance understanding about each other and for navy leaders to address matters on safeguarding global sea security.     High-level delegations from 29 countries and 21 vessels from 14countries will take part in the review, according to the Defence Ministry.     China would send domestic-made warships and weapons to the review, including the debut of its nuclear submarines.     As the review is to start in days, Ding said the weather in Qingdao is their "prime concern" for the review.     "It would definitely affect the review if bad weather appears," Ding said, "such as rain and fog."     But Ding also said that according to weather forecast, the cold air which caused rain and heavy wind in Qingdao since Saturday afternoon would come to an end by Wednesday. He is confident that the weather on Thursday would be good enough for the review to go smoothly, if "no major weather accidents happen."

YEKATERINBURG, Russia, June 15 (Xinhua) -- President Hu Jintao on Monday expressed China's readiness to work with Uzbekistan to push forward their relations of friendship, cooperation and partnership.     At a meeting with Uzbek President Islam Karimov here, the Chinese president said relations between China and Uzbekistan have witnessed healthy and stable growth since the two countries established friendly and partnership relations in 2005.     The two countries have maintained frequent high-level exchanges, deepened their political mutual trust and expanded cooperation in such fields as trade, economy, energy, security and culture, he said. BEIJING, July 10 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Finance (MOF) announced Friday that it will launch two more batches of electronic savings bonds of up to 50 billion yuan (7.32 billion U.S. dollars) since next week.     According to the ministry, one batch of the e-savings bonds of 40 billion yuan has a term of three years, with a fixed annual interest rate of 3.73 percent.     The other, the five-year e-savings bonds, is worth 10 billion yuan at a fixed annual interest rate of four percent.     The two bonds will be issued from July 15 to 31, with interests to be calculated from July 15 and paid annually, said the ministry in a statement on its website.     These bonds are open to only individual investors, the MOF said.     Compared with other types of bonds, the e-savings bond is seen as more convenient for investors. For example, the interest can bepaid through direct deposit into the investor's account.     This is the second time the ministry launches this kind of bond this year, with the first issuance of two batches of e-savings bonds in April.     The ministry also said it would issue two batches of book-entry treasury bonds next week with a face value of 12.48 billion yuan and 12.65 billion yuan each.     One with the face value of 12.48 billion yuan has a term of 91 days, and the issue price, set by competitive bidding, was 99.72 yuan for a face value of 100 yuan. In this sense, the annual yield will be 1.15 percent, the ministry said.     The other has a term of 273 days, and the issue price was set at 99.077 yuan for 100 yuan, with an annual yield of 1.25 percent.     The ministry said the book-entry T-bonds will be sold from July 13 to July 15. Trading of the bonds will begin July 17.

HEFEI, April 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu Tuesday urged efforts to fight pine wood nematode disease, which has caused severe damage to pine forests in several provinces.     Strong measures and more funds must be used to curb the spread of the disease, Hui said.     The disease, also known as pine wood cancer, can quickly kill huge numbers of trees. In China, the disease was first detected in1982 in eastern Jiangsu Province.     According to a conference in Huangshan City in eastern Anhui Province held by the State Forestry Administration, the disease has spread to 14 provincial regions, killed more than 5 million mu(333,333 hectare) of pine forests and caused huge losses.     Attendees at the conference agreed measures must be taken to stop the spread of the deadly disease by 2010 and reduce the area of affected forests 60 percent by 2030.

BEIJING, May 24 (Xinhua) -- Natural disasters killed 88,928 people in China last year, according to a report released by the Ministry of Civil Affairs.     The number is the highest since 1976, when the 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit Tangshan City in north China's Hebei Province and killed more than 242,000 people, according to the report on the statistics of the country's civil affairs in 2008.     In addition, a total of 480 million people were affected by natural disasters, with direct financial losses of 1.175 trillion yuan (about 173 billion U.S. dollars).     In 2008, major natural disasters were frequent in China, with the unexpected strike of snows in the south and the devastating May 12 earthquake in Sichuan Province, the ministry said in the report.     The 8.0-magnitude earthquake left more than 87,000 people dead or missing and more than 374,640 injured in Sichuan and neighboring provinces.     Before that, the blizzards that struck much of central and southern China in early 2008 left 129 people dead and losses reached 151.65 billion yuan, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs.
