BEIJING, June 13 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government on Monday launched a week-long campaign throughout the country which aims to make the public think more about food safety.Vice Premier Li Keqiang relayed to the campaign's organizer that it is essential to publicize knowledge and regulations on food safety among the public.Li, member of the Politburo Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, said that special operations and severe punishment should be adopted to decrease the likelihood of food safety scandals.As part of the campaign, a food safety inspection team under the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee held a conclusive meeting in Beijing to review its two-month supervisory tour to Jiangsu, Hubei, Sichuan and other four provinces and regions in April and May.A statement released by the inspection team on Monday said it will issue a report on food safety problems to the NPC Standing Committee.China's food safety has become a major public concern since a nationwide tainted milk powder scandal was exposed in August 2008.China's top legislature passed the Food Safety Law in 2009 which was soon followed by a nationwide food safety inspection.In the latest food safety scandal, drinks and food sold on the mainland but produced in Taiwan have been found to contain the toxic plasticizer DEHP.China's Ministries of Public Security, Agriculture, Health, as well as the General Administration for Quality Supervision, State Food and Drug Administration are also involved in the campaign.

BEIJING, Aug. 24 (Xinhuanet) -- Married patients are more likely than single ones to survive 15 years after heart surgery, according to a study online in the Health Psychology.Researchers of the study tracked 225 people who underwent coronary bypass surgery from 1987 to 1990. They found that 124 patients of them, or about 55 percent, survived for at least the next 15 years. And 61 percent of the married patients and 30 percent of the unmarried survived.Kathleen King, lead author of study, said that the close connection to another person in a marriage lengthened patients’ lives."Marriage gives you purpose in life, and feeling like you have a reason to live is an important part of doing the things you need to do to stay alive," Harry T. Reis, co-author of the study, said. "Married people also help each other; remind each other it's time to take their pills. And they probably eat healthier."However, the marriage quality had different effects on the survival odds between men and women. Men who had bypass surgery lived longer by virtue of simply being married, regardless of how happy or miserable the union, but the marriage quality had more impact on women's survival after surgery. 83 percent of the happily married women had survived, compared with 28 percent of the less happily married women and 27 percent of the single women. Among the men, 83 percent of the happily married were still alive, compared with 60 percent of the less happily married and 36 percent of the single."The most dramatic thing to me is [that] just being married, especially if you had a happy marriage, had that big an effect 15 years later," King told ABCNews.com.Marriage does not only have a positive effect on the survival of patients after heart surgery, but also benefits patients with other diseases.In recent years, a number of studies have showed several apparent health benefits of marriage. BEIJING, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- China's top economic planner announced Wednesday that it will raise the minimum purchase prices for wheat from farmers in 2012 to boost grain output.The move "aims to protect farmers' enthusiasm to grow grains and further stimulate grain production," the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) said in a statement.The minimum purchase price for white wheat in the country's major wheat-producing areas will be increased to 102 yuan (16 U.S. dollars) per 50 kg, up 7 yuan from the 2011 price, said the NDRC.It said the minimum purchase prices for red and mixed wheat will both rise 9 yuan to 102 yuan per 50 kg next year.Wheat is one of China's major grains, which feeds its population of 1.3 billion people mainly with domestically-produced grains.A stable food supply is crucial to China's efforts to check inflation, as food prices account for about a third of the weighting in its consumer price index (CPI) calculation, a main gauge of inflation.China's CPI rose to a 27-month year-on-year high of 6.5 percent in July and weakened slightly to 6.2 percent in August.The country's grain output rose 2.9 percent last year to 546.41 million tonnes, marking the seventh consecutive year of output growth.The Ministry of Agriculture expects the output to reach a record high of 550 million tonnes this year.
