SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego police officer shot a man during a response to an emergency call in a Rancho Penasquitos neighborhood Wednesday night, police officials said.SDPD officials said the incident happened around 7:30 p.m. in the 8500 block of Celtic Court, near Donaker Street. Officials confirmed officers were called to the area after a 911 call was made regarding a domestic violence incident.An SDPD official at the scene said, "The dispatcher could overhear the reporting party and the male on the radio call. She could hear the male talking about wanting to be shot by police officers and there was indication there was firearms inside of the house.”Police said when officers arrived, they found a 61-year-old man and his wife in front their home. When officers approached, the man “produced a revolver from his waistband” and started to draw the weapon towards officers. Officials said one officer fired a single round from his service weapon, striking the man in the torso.The injured man, identified on Friday as Richard Young, was breathing and talking while being taken to a local hospital, police said. Young underwent emergency surgery early Thursday morning, and police said Friday that Young "remains in a local hospital under guard."According to the department, officers recovered the man’s gun at the scene.The officers involved in the incident were placed on administrative leave in light of the investigation, which is being conducted by SDPD’s Homicide Unit.Officials identified the officer involved as Timothy Breck, a five-year veteran of the Department assigned to Northeastern Division.SDPD officials said: “When the Homicide Unit completes their investigation, it will be reviewed by the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office to determine if the officers bear any criminal liability for their actions.The Internal Affairs Unit will conduct an investigation to determine if there were any policy violations, and the Shooting Review Board will evaluate the tactics used by the officers.The Community Review Board on Police Practices will conduct a review of the incident and provide any appropriate recommendations.The Federal Bureau of Investigations and the United States Attorney’s Office will also be monitoring the investigation.” 2282

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A South Bay auto parts store owner is trying to weather the economic storm during the Coronavirus pandemic.Rafael Cotero is the proud owner of two Napa Auto Parts stores, one in Otay Mesa and the other in San Ysidro. Auto parts stores and repair shops are considered essential business during this shut down.Cotero worked his way up to become a small business owner.“I started delivering auto parts out of the Napa in National City. [I was] a driver at 19,” Cotero said.He opened the first store in 2018. Several months ago, he opened the San Ysidro location. He was supposed to have his grand opening celebration on March 21st, but then everything changed as the COVID-19 pandemic started to become a reality in San Diego County. The family made the decision to postpone the celebration—a decision that was made before the official stay at home order was issued.“It was tough because you order in this product in preparation. We were going to do hamburgers, hot dogs, [have a] radio station. And all that just halts. It’s not cheap,” Cotero said.On top of that, they have had to cut hours at the stores to make up for lost income. Cotero estimates business to be down at least 50 percent. “I think a lot of people probably don’t know there are Napa franchises… we’re not some big corporation,” he said. His daughter Bianca has seen her parents struggle over the years, but they never gave up.“I saw them still get stronger in their faith and work harder. A bunch of doors closed, but that didn’t stop them,” Bianca Cotero said. The Cotero family is hoping to keep customers and attract new ones. They’re offering free home delivery if you are near the San Ysidro store, as well as a discount.“I know that we’ll get through this.” Jeanette Cotero said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego Marine is setting out to accomplish something few have, climbing the continent's highest peaks and running a marathon on each one.Major Patrick Holcomb is calling it the 7&7 Challenge.“It’s not really official because up until this point only two people have done it," said Holcomb, who's been in the Marine Corps for 18 years.Holcomb will rely on his rigorous training and gear as he completes the mission.He's already run five marathons on five continents and has climbed three peaks.“Every country you go to you get to experience people and culture, there are a lot of differences around the world," said Holcomb. "What’s been shocking for me is realizing, how much at the end of the day, people are all the same."He plans to use his personal mission for good, teaming up with a nonprofit that helps veterans suffering from PTSD or traumatic brain injuries.Holcomb plans to start fundraising during the final leg of the challenge, Mount Everest in 2022.He's currently based at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. 1057

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- After saving the lives of four strangers, a San Diego organ donor will be honored in the Rose Parade.Loved ones describe Alessandro 'Ale' Speroni as a vibrant, loving, and selfless man."Ale is, still is, a ray of light in a dark day. He was always smiling, always having a good word for everybody," said Francesca Messori, Speroni's good friend.RELATED: South Bay mom meets woman who received her son's heartSperoni, 41, was born in Italy but fell in love with San Diego on vacation and never left. Here he also fell in love with his wife Dana, who was a customer at his coffee shop."His smile was just captivating, he was an amazing listener, he was full of life," said Dana. Ale passed away unexpectedly, suffering a brain aneurysm while surfing. "His heart kept on beating because he knew it was going to someone special," said Dana. Ale was a registered organ donor, and Lifesharing carried out his final wishes by finding recipients for his heart, liver, kidneys, and pancreas. "Losing a loved one is very hard; there are no words that can really describe that.
