Prosecutors have charged a West Seneca, New York, man with criminally negligent homicide after a dispute over wearing a face covering left an 80-year-old man dead.Donald Lewinski, 65 of West Seneca, was taken into custody Monday following an incident September 26 at Pamp's Red Zone Bar and Grill.According to Erie County District Attorney John Flynn, Lewinski got into a verbal confrontation with Rocco Sapienza - another regular at the bar - after Sapienza noticed Lewinski was not wearing a mask while bringing buckets of beer to a band playing outside.At one point, Flynn said Sapienza got up and confronted Lewinski. That's when Lewinski stood up and pushed Sapienza "hard" with both hands, the D.A. said. Sapienza fell back and hit his head on the ground. Sapienza was taken to Erie County Medical Center in nearby Buffalo, where he was unresponsive for four days. He died on September 30.The cause of death is blunt force trauma to the head, authorities said.The owner of Pamp's Red Zone released this statement:"We are all deeply saddened by the loss of Rocco. Being a truck driver isn't the draw it used to be. At Excel Driver Services, they're grinding gears trying to figure out how to get more people behind the wheel of big rigs. “It's a big issue,” Excel owner Jason Emery said. “You've seen companies go out of business because they can't support growth because they can't get safe drivers to operate their equipment.” Emery says America has a major shortage of licensed truck drivers and the numbers support him. According to the American Trucking Associations, the industry was short more than 60,000 drivers in 2018 – that's almost a 20 percent increase from the year before. The ATA also reports a need to hire more than a million new drivers over the next decade to keep up with growing transportation demands. “There's a huge need for qualified truck drivers right now,” Emery said. “Every company in this town is looking for drivers right now.” Emery says the major reason for the decline is that many drivers are getting older and retiring. Now the industry is trying to attract younger drivers, people like Shelby Stennett – who is changing careers from a frack hand in the oil fields to a truck driver on the interstates. “As far as career-wise making that extra money and put that money in my pocket,” he said. “Being able to provide for myself and my family and my friends. It's important to me because I got to eat. I got to eat to survive.” According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the starting pay for a truck driver is ,000 per year. After a few years on the road, however, the ATA says drivers can easily make six figures driving an 18-wheeler. Despite the pay, this job isn't for everyone. Drivers can spend weeks on the road alone and sleep in their rigs. Now economists say fewer truck drivers on the road could end up costing you a lot more money. “For the last several years we've gotten used to free shipping and one-day shipping and give it to me right now,” said Christina Huber, Ph.D. a professor of economics at Metropolitan State University Denver. “Maybe that can't continue.” Huber says with more online shopping and fewer drivers to transport the goods, shipping costs could skyrocket. “If they're having trouble attracting drivers to the industry the only way to alleviate that shortage is to make it more attractive for them to enter,” she said. To attract more drivers, many companies are increasing pay. INDIANAPOLIS — A new drug from Eli Lilly and Company to help hospitalized COVID-19 patients requiring oxygen has received emergency use authorization from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.Barivitinib, which is used in combination with remdesivir, can be given to both adult and pediatric patients two years old and older who are suspected to have or have a confirmed case of COVID-19 and need supplemental oxygen, invasive mechanical ventilation, or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. "Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Lilly has been committed to finding potential treatments to help people around the world who've been impacted by this virus," David A. Ricks, Lilly chairman and CEO, said in a press release. "Today's FDA action for baricitinib marks the second Lilly therapy to be granted an EUA, in addition to the recent neutralizing antibody EUA for high-risk non-hospitalized patients, increasing the number of treatment options for COVID-19 patients at different stages of the disease. More than two years ago, students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School turned their grief and anguish into activism after their school tragedy.Many of those students who were part of that movement are voting in their first presidential election."I was very proud to vote," said Buchwald.Buchwald and Hibshman are now Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School alumni. They were juniors in 2018 when a gunman opened fire in Building 12 at the school, killing 17 people."[The shooting] still brings moments of fear and sadness back," said Hibshman. After the Parkland school shooting in 2018, Zach Hibshman and Adam Buchwald started the group "Parents Promise to Kids" to push for stricter gun laws. "Before the shooting, this wouldn't be part of my everyday life. I wouldn’t be an activist. I'd be a normal kid doing my homework and studying for the ACT," Zach said more than two years ago.They pushed to bring about change in the wake of tragedy, starting the group "Parents Promise to Kids."The movement called on people to sign a contract pledging to vote for politicians who support stricter gun laws."[The group] exploded across the country, and we got so many signatures," said Buchwald.But something was missing at the time leading up to the midterm-elections nearly two years ago. "I thought he was crazy," said Dave Egeler about what his identical twin told him he was going to do to raise ,000 to help two charities dedicated to helping dogs rescued from neglect, dogfighting and other forms of cruelty. This Saturday, Dan Egeler, a retired lawyer and cancer survivor, is planning to run four full marathons in 24 hours. Egeler's goal is to get a lot of people to donate a little bit or a lot to help him get to his goal of ,000. The money will be shared between Waggin' Tails Dog Rescue and Bark Nation which helps dogs recover from the abuse they've been subjected to in dogfighting. Both charities are nonprofit organizations that are driven by volunteers who are dedicated to helping the dogs recover from any physical and mental injuries they've suffered. "Anyone who owns a dog knows they are unconditional in their love," Egeler said. "They provide a lot of joy and excitement in the family and they're just so great to have around so we love dogs."And everyone will be able to keep up with Egeler's progress that will begin Saturday at 1 o'clock in the afternoon because he'll be wearing a tracker.Egeler will start in Dexter and run through parts of western Washtenaw county and on a track at night.
