SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Neighbors in Del Cerro say an intersection near their homes is a hot spot for accidents and speeding, with the latest incident occurring Monday night.The streets and intersection in question are Madra Avenue and Del Cerro Boulevard. Denisse Newell took cell phone video during the aftermath of Monday’s accident. Newell says she’s reached out to City of San Diego officials to ask that something be done to make drivers slow down.Another neighbor, Emily Broadwater, says she was involved in an accident at the intersection in 2018 after a man didn’t stop at the stop sign. Her minivan was totaled.Newell says her dog was also hit by a speeding car and survived the accident. Her husband has stopped walking their children to school after multiple close calls. Neighbors worry that the next time it’ll be a person. The women say they’d like the city to implement like speed bumps, a stoplight or roundabouts to get drivers to slow down.ABC 10News reached out to San Diego City Councilman Scott Sherman’s office, who represents the district. San Diego (KGTV) Over 3,000 volunteers worked Pride Weekend to make sure all the events ran smoothly. But one volunteer says a brutal attack in 2016 almost kept him from being out there. He was stabbed and beaten for wearing Pride T-shirt. “I came back because I found my pride again,” says volunteer Chris Keiser. He was one of the many volunteers up early Saturday morning making sure everyone was in place for the large parade. “I make sure everyone has their radios so they can communicate and check out their cart. We kind of rally the people together, get them excited.”But this was the first time in two years Keiser found himself volunteering after struggling to find his excitement again for the pride community. “I was going to volunteer every year after that and I just couldn’t I just couldn’t bring myself to.”In 2016, Keiser was jogging in his Oak Park neighborhood wearing a Pride T-shirt when he was beaten and stabbed on College Drive. His memory is still fuzzy about what happened. “I do remember a car, the derogatory names, then hearing a car again, and then next thing I know I was on the phone calling whoever for help.”Keiser says it was the pride community that helped him through that dark time. This year San Diego Pride is celebrating 50 years since the Stonewall Riots in New York. Keiser says he’s finding his strength in knowing others paved the way for San Diego to have such a celebration. “You made me try to silence myself and take away my pride, but all you did was make me come back stronger, and I’m louder than before.”San Diego Police investigated Keiser’s attack as a hate crime. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- Flags are being flown at half-staff around the country today to honor fallen firefighters and to promote emergency preparedness. Sunday is also the kick-off of National Fire Prevention Week.Cher Smith's home in Crest has a 360-degree view of nature. It's beautiful to look at, but dangerous during fire season. "Somebody is throwing a cigarette out, sparks from a car, whatever," Smith said. "There's always that fear that something is all of a sudden going to cause a fire to get out of control."In the last month, she and her son-in-law spent hours clearing up the dead brush on her 2.5 acre property. "We just barely made a dent on what needed to be done," Smith said. Smith said she couldn't afford to pay a landscaper to finish the job, but that all changed when she looked out her window earlier this week. "They are all up there like ants on the mountain bringing down the brush," Smith said. She saw CALFIRE and inmate fire crews working earnestly, with shovels in hand, to create a safe, defensible space. The space won't just create a defensible space for Smith's home, but for the entire Crest community. "I said, 'You have no idea how jazzed I am that you guys are doing this for us!'" Smith said enthusiastically. That's because just last month, she watched the Dehesa fire, creeping up toward her home. Also, back in 2003, her son-in-law lost his childhood home to a wildfire."A lot of people in Crest had their homes burned, so I think people are on high alert and sensitive to the dangers," Smith said. That's why to kick off National Fire Prevention Week, she wants to thank the fire service for their hard work. She also wants to remind her East County neighbors to be prepared. "I like to see our tax dollars going to being proactive, rather than having them create these fire barriers after the fact," Smith said. 1861

(KGTV) - Families of the San Diego Unified School District participated in a telephone town hall Wednesday to listen in on a discussion between panelists Superintendent Cindy Marten and three SDUSD teachers. The school year is set to begin virtually Aug. 31 and the panel discussed what day-to-day classroom time will look like.Teachers shared some of the steps they’ve taken to prepare for the online learning and gave tips to families to keep students successful. Some tips included making sure parent information is updated to ensure accurate information on scheduling and supply pickup is shared, setting alarms on phones to keep students on track with their schedule and compensate for a lack of bells, and also creating a designated learning space for students.Related: San Diego Unified School District announces detailed online learning planThe panel, organized and hosted by Assemblymember Todd Gloria, said individual schools will share specific information on where and when families can pick up supplies, including books and computers. The teachers on the panel also assured families that the students would not spend the whole school day in front of a screen, but rather have some time with the teacher, some time with other students and some individual work time. They also added that older students will work on a quarter system instead of a semester system, which would allow smaller class sizes and fewer classes for each student.While the main message of the town hall was hope and teamwork between schools and families, parent Andrea Gallegos said she still has questions that went unanswered.“Is there a plan to transition back when we’re off the watch list now? Is there any kind of timeline for that? I’m frustrated,” she said.Despite the county being removed from the state’s watch list, the district said it plans to begin the 2020-21 school year with online instruction."You may recall that San Diego Unified announced on July 13 that it would start the school year with online instruction. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— The man accused of raping and torturing a woman in his home in Rancho Penasquitos faced a judge today. 32-year-old Uber driver, Seyed Hassan Kaboli pleaded not guilty to 12 counts of sexual crimes. Kaboli peaked through his holding cell, as the judge announced his fate. San Diego Police said Kaboli bound, raped, and tortured a woman, multiple times at his home in Rancho Penasquitos on May 19th and 20th. Sky10 footage showed the victim being consoled by the police on Monday, and she said she ran naked to escape 24 hours of brutal misery. The next day, Kaboli was arrested just north of National City. 10News obtained a copy of the criminal complaint, explaining Kaboli’s 12 felony charges. They include:(5) Forcible oral copulation (2) Rape(1) Rape by a foreign object(1) Torture(1) Assault with great bodily injury(1) Sexual battery(1) False imprisonmentThe complaint also suggests that there may be another person involved in the crimes. Under count three, it reads Kaboli “inflicted aggravated mayhem and torture on the victim and another person.”Under count eleven, it reads “said person was unlawfully restrained by said defendant and an accomplice.”In the courtroom, neither the defense nor the district attorney would comment on a possible third party.Still, the judge issued a protective order for the victim— a woman, whose relationship was not disclosed. But Kaboli’s defense attorney said she was not his Uber customer. “There is no prior relationship,” Kaboli’s attorney, Ryan Tegnelia said. “He is not denying that they came into contact with each other on the date of the incident. But before that, they did not have any relationship.”Tegnelia said Kaboli’s family describes him as an introverted man who keeps to himself. They said they are shocked at his arrest. “This obviously came completely out of left field for them, caught everybody by surprise,” Tegnelia said. The judge set Kaboli’s bail amount at 0,000.
