PALMDALE, Calif. (CNS) - The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Thursday investigated a gunbattle between detectives from its Major Crimes Bureau and a man accused of spousal abuse and other crimes, climaxing with the death of the suspect, who was later identified as a half brother of the young Black man found hanged from a tree in Palmdale last week. The shooting occurred in a parking lot at an apartment complex in the 3400 block of 15th Street West in the Kern County town of Rosamond as the detectives trailed a suspect about 4:35 p.m. Wednesday, said Deputy James Nagao of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department."Detectives from our Major Crimes Bureau were actively searching for a kidnap, spousal abuse, assault with a deadly weapon suspect," Lt. Robert Westphal told reporters at the scene. The investigation led to the parking lot of the apartment complex, Nagao said."The detectives observed and positively identified a male matching the suspect's description in a vehicle," Nagao said. "Detectives followed the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop. The suspect opened the front passenger door of the vehicle and engaged the deputies by firing multiple rounds at them with a handgun. At that time, an officer involved shooting occurred during which the suspect was struck several times in the upper torso."The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene," Nagao said. "The female driver was also struck by gunfire and transported to a local hospital where she was treated and released. A seven year old girl was also in the vehicle and was uninjured."The suspect was struck several times in the upper body, Westphal said. The woman suffered a gunshot wound to the chest. The 7-year-old girl's relationship to either adult was not immediately disclosed.Deputies recovered a gun at the scene. No deputies were hurt. The man who was fatally shot was Terron Jammal Boone, a half-brother of Fuller, a Fuller family attorney said."This afternoon I had to notify the sisters of Robert Fuller that their half-brother Terron Jammal Boone was killed by Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies in Kern County," attorney Jamon Hicks said in a statement."At this time, until we receive all of the information, the family and their legal team doesn't have any further comment on this incident. The family respectfully asks that their privacy be respected."Court records cited by the Los Angeles Times show that Boone was charged Tuesday with multiple criminal counts including criminal threats, assault, false imprisonment and domestic violence.Surveillance video of the incident posted by the Rosamond Community Watchdog, a local news platform, showed multiple vehicles trailing a dark SUV into a housing complex parking lot, The Times reported. Voices repeatedly shouted, "Hands up!" before gunfire erupted.None of the detectives nor their vehicles were equipped with cameras, but investigators probing the battle are trying to recover footage from doorbell cameras and other home video systems in the area, Westphal said.Siara Anderson told The Times that she was on the balcony of an apartment building adjacent to the parking lot in the 3400 block of 15th Street West when Boone was shot. Anderson said that she heard four or five gunshots and saw a man slumped in the passenger seat of a blue sport utility vehicle.Law enforcement officers, in plainclothes but wearing bulletproof vests, were at the scene, she said, along with about five unmarked police cars.Robert Fulller's body was found with a rope around his neck about 3:40 a.m. June 10 in Poncitlan Square, across from Palmdale City Hall. Authorities initially said the death appeared to be a suicide, although an official cause of death has not been made. The family is asking for an independent autopsy to be paid for by the city of Palmdale. On Monday, Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva vowed to conduct a thorough investigation into the death -- with cooperation from state and federal agencies. 3979

Papa John's tanked Tuesday after a report that a plan to sell the company has fallen apart. The Wall Street Journal reported that the asset manager Trian Management Funds is no longer interested in bidding for the company. According to the Journal, others are still considering taking a stake in the company, but not a total purchase.Papa John's (PZZA) stock was down 10% at market close Tuesday.Papa John's declined to comment for this story. Trian did not immediately respond to a request for comment from CNN Business.Rumors have been swirling for weeks about potential buyers for the company. Each report has caused shares of the company to spike. The Journal reported Trian's interest last month.Without a buyer, the struggling pizza company will have to find a way to convince investors that it can solve its problems on its own, and beat out competitors Domino's and Pizza Hut. That's a tall order. The company has been working hard to distance itself from controversial founder John Schnatter, who resigned his role as chairman in July after news broke that he had used the N-word on a conference call.Papa John's said earlier this month that same-store sales in North America fell by 9.8% during the most recent quarter. Total revenue dropped 15.7% from a year earlier to about 4 million.Schnatter also stepped down as CEO at the end of last year after he caused a controversy by blaming the NFL for poor pizza sales. Schnatter said sales were hurt by the way the league handled players' kneeling during the National Anthem in protest of racial injustice.Since then, Papa John's hasn't been able to regain its momentum, and sales have continued to slip.Other pizza sellers have struggled this quarter. Pizza Hut's sales were flat, and though Domino's (DPZ) reported domestic and international same-store growth, the company missed analyst expectations. But Pizza Hut and Domino's are better equipped to win the pizza wars. Domino's has invested heavily in tech, and Pizza Hut is bolstering its partnerships. Pizza Hut replaced Papa John's as the NFL's official sponsor earlier this year. 2159

PARADISE, Calif. (KGTV) - Dramatic body camera video recorded on the first day of Northern California's Camp Fire shows a Butte County Sheriff's deputy in what he thought would be the final moments of his life. BCSO Deputy Aaron Parmley was driving down Pentz Road in Paradise when his vehicle became disabled due to the firestorm. Parmley got out to run to safety.Fearing that he was about to die, Parmley switched on his body camera to document the situation the morning of Nov. 8.Video shows Parmley walking near a home and down the middle of a road with burning embers surrounding him. Other people, including a nurse and police officer, were walking nearby. Parmley's struggle to breathe in the heavy smoke is apparent. The life-saving moment happened roughly an hour and 14 minutes after Parmley turned on his camera. A bulldozer approached Parmley and the police officer, and both men got inside to be taken to safety. The Camp Fire went on to become the deadliest fire in California history, with 88 fatalities and 196 people missing as of Nov. 29. PALA, Calif. (KGTV) – An Oceanside woman is dead and a man and 11-year-old are hospitalized after a vehicle was found overturned on an embankment near State Route 76. The family of three, a father, mother and son, were traveling from Palomar Mountain back to their home in Oceanside. At about 6:13 a.m. Friday, California Highway Patrol received a call from San Diego Sheriff's Department about a vehicle that had veered off the roadway. The driver, a 30-year-old man from Oceanside, said he was unsure of his location and knocked unconscious in the crash, but that he was somewhere along SR-76 between Palomar Mountain and Oceanside. He also was not sure what time they went over the edge, but said they had been driving around 11 p.m. Thursday night, which means they could have been down there for close to eight hours. Both agencies dispatched crews to find the vehicle and using his cellphone location, were able to find the vehicle just after 6:30 a.m. south of SR-76 near Bodie Blvd. The vehicle, a Subaru carrying, was about 300 feet down a steep embankment near the roadway."He wasn’t even sure when the crash happened. He thought he left somewhere around 11 o’clock last night, heading home from Palomar Mountain to Oceanside, so he may have been out there all night," said CHP Public Information Officer Mark Latulippe. The right-front passenger, a 30-year-old woman, had died from her injuries in the crash. The driver sustained major injuries and was taken to Palomar Medical Center. An 11-year-old male who was in the right rear of the Subaru also received major injuries and was taken to Rady Children's Hospital. The driver and child are expected to recover.A small dog was also in the vehicle at the time of the crash. Animal control helped locate the dog after the crash.Investigators are not sure how long the vehicle had been there. They believe sometime overnight the Subaru was traveling on SR-76 near the Wilderness Gardens Preserve when for unknown reasons it left the roadway and overturned down the embankment. All three victims were ejected during the crash and found either partially or fully outside of the vehicle, CHP says. The names of those involved in the crash were not released. Investigators do not believe impairment was a factor in the crash and everyone is believed to have been wearing a seatbelt. 2342
