(KGTV) - While support for medical marijuana is speeding up on a state level and in nationwide opinion polls, federal advancement is slowing due to research and approval gridlock. There’s no denying the popularity of marijuana in the United States, with THC and cannabis products approved for medical use in 33 states. Recreational use is supported in 11 states, including California. The election results are echoed in a 2016 Quinnipiac University poll which showed 81 percent of Americans support medical marijuana legalization. California's support of medical marijuana started more than two decades ago when voters passed Proposition 215, the “Compassionate Use Act of 1996.” Laws calling for regulation of medical marijuana were passed in 2015 and 2016, with recreational marijuana becoming legal in 2018. While voters increasingly approve marijuana legalization in various states across the country, the federal government has been slower to grant permission for use. RELATED: Timeline: How marijuana laws have changed in California In 1970, the Drug Enforcement Agency rated marijuana as a Schedule I controlled substance, defined as having a high potential for abuse with no accepted medical use for treatment. Almost 50 years later, the Federal Drug Administration has not approved marketing cannabis for the treatment of any condition. However, four cannabis derived or related products have been approved for use with a prescription from a licensed healthcare provider. Epidiolex contains a purified form of CBD for treating seizures associated with Lennox-Gastaut or Dravet syndrome in patients as young as 2 years old, according to the FDA. Also approved by the agency are Marinol and Syndros, used for treating weight loss in AIDS patients. It is important to conduct medical research into the safety and effectiveness of cannabis products through adequate and well-controlled clinical trials,” FDA officials report. The agency said it supports medical marijuana research by providing information about the process to conduct the research and requirements needed to develop a cannabis-derived drug, supporting developers through meetings and regular interactions, and providing general support. (SAN DIEGO) KGTV -- New records released show police responded to the home of the man that injured two police officers dozens of times in the past. On June 23rd, police responded to a disturbance call at the Rolando Court condo. When they smelled smoke, they called firefighters to the scene. Officers knocked on the front door for more than 20 minutes but received no response, officials said. Firefighters forced entry into the home. That’s when firefighters and officers were met with gunfire. Two officers were shot.The man inside the condo, Joe Darwish, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.Following the June 23rd shooting, Team 10 requested details regarding the number of times police responded to Darwish's address, but they were not released until after the investigation was over. The officers were cleared of any wrongdoing.Documents show that since 2013, there were 31 calls for service to Darwish's address before the night of the shooting. More than half were 5150 calls, where officers checked on the individual’s mental wellbeing. Nine calls were for disturbances, some with violence. In February 2016, there was one call listed as “CCCC,” which police say describes a chronic caller to the department. The records also revealed police were at the home eight days before the shooting for another disturbance call with potential violence. Darwish did have a criminal history and was not supposed to own any weapons. 1443

(KGTV) -- Since 2013, Kitchens for Good has helped fight hunger across San Diego by working with local food backs, created programs to help those with troubled pasts, and now they're adding a baking option to their apprenticeship program.After Kitchens for Good launched their culinary apprenticeship program five years ago, it has led to both success and opportunity. "It's an amazing program here, we are so lucky to be here doing this," said an instructor for their baking program. They added in a baking option to their existing culinary program that launched this month.Their apprenticeships aren't your normal "bake and set" classes. They hope students like Kenneth Donato, take what they learn inside to lead better lives. "Just 3 months ago I was living under a bridge, now my wife and I we're living inside. I'm going to school, I work here, and help them out," said Donato.Directors for the nonprofit said out of their 300 apprentices, 85% landed jobs upon completion. Baking instructor Helen Coyne added, "I see so many opportunities in baking and pastry, and I'm so excited for them to have that." They say adding in a baking program means more students can sign up, in hopes more will get hired.The baking program is a free 20-week hands-on course for those who qualify. 1291
