BEIJING, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- China's top political advisor has called for seriously studying the essence of the third plenary session of the 17th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), which is ushering in a new round of rural reforms in the country.     Great efforts should be made to push forward the rural reforms, so as to consolidate and develop the country's general situation featuring a stable and fast economic development and a harmonious and stable society, said Jia Qinglin, chairman of Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee.     Jia, who is also a member of the Standing Committee of CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, made a study tour in Jilin Province on Oct. 18-22 in the company of Jilin's Party chief Wang Min and Governor Han Changfu.     During his stay, he visited local factories, villages, schools, research institutions and construction sites, and heard reports by local officials to learn about the real situation in this northeastern province. He called for firmly taking the socialist road with China's own characteristics in the country's political development, under the guidance of the great banner of socialism.

BEIJING, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- China's new rules on foreign media reflected the country's determination to carry on the policy of opening up to the outside world, a senior information official said here Saturday, hours after the issuing of the new rules.     Wang Chen said this in a ceremony for the establishment of "Israel Epstein Research Center" of Qinghua University.     Wang pointed out that the new rules draw on the experience of providing service and managerial assistance for foreign correspondents during Beijing Olympics, and they will make foreign correspondents reporting activities in China more convenient.     "Chinese government welcomes foreign media and reporters, and we hope more stories about the country will be told to the world. We will spare no effort to provide help and service to them," he said," meanwhile, we hope foreign media and reporters could abide by Chinese laws and professional morals, to report unbiasedly and justly, so to promote understanding and cooperation between China and the rest of the world."     According to the new rules, foreign reporters wishing to interview organizations or individuals in China no longer need to be received and accompanied by the Chinese organizations.     An item in the old version was also cancelled, which asked foreign reporters to get approval from the local government's foreign affairs department when they wanted to do reporting in the regions open to them.     Seymour Topping, a famous journalist from the United States and the former administrator of the Pulitzer Prizes, told Xinhua that the removal of the restrictions on foreign correspondents may mark an important progress of China,     China should learn to tolerate the judgement of the outside world, be it positive or negative. GUANGZHOU, Nov. 22 (Xinhua) -- What China can do for the world is not to sell out its massive dollar reserve, but slightly increase its hold of the currency to give reasonable support to the U.S. effort to save its economy, said a senior economist here on Saturday.     It is indeed difficult for China to handle its huge forex reserve, as the U.S. currency has already depreciated 20 percent against the Chinese yuan, said Cheng Siwei, well-known economist at a financial forum held in Guangdong.     "China would suffer from losses if it sells off the dollar, so our strategy should be not to sell, but to slightly increase dollar reserve," said Cheng, also former vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC).     Cheng made the remarks amid increasing concern that China might use its forex reserve to finance its 4-trillion-yuan stimulus plan. China held 1.9 trillion dollars worth of forex reserve by September this year.     China "can only afford to do what is corresponding to its level of development and national power amid a global crisis," said Cheng.     "We should be prudent as to how to deal with our forex reserve," said Cheng, noting that China, despite its large size of economy, has its gross domestic product (GDP) accounting for only 6 percent of the world's total, and its per capita GDP ranking falling out of the top one hundred list.

ATHENS, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao flew into Athens Monday for a state visit to Greece, which he said would be successful with the joint efforts by the Chinese side and the Greek side.     "In recent years, the China-Greece comprehensive strategic partnership has been consolidated continuously with increased exchanges and expanded cooperation in all sectors," said President Hu in a written speech issued upon his arrival at the airport.     He said that China attaches great importance to the development of its relations with Greece and will work together with the Greek side for the even better ties in the future. BEIJING, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- A compensation scheme for families of sickened and dead babies in the tainted milk powder scandal, which caused a food safety scare in China, is under review, a Health Ministry spokesman said on Wednesday.     The ministry is collecting medical records and checking statistics to make preparations for compensation, spokesman Mao Qun'an told reporters.     Mao said he "has not been authorized to release details" about the compensation plan but assured the media that relevant departments are working on it and will release the results after the plan is adopted.     Mao also said local governments paid a large amount of money for hospital ultrasound equipment and medication after more than 22 million children needed testing after drinking formula containing an industrial chemical known as melamine. That testing started in September.     Children who were confirmed to have developed kidney stones received free treatment.     The ministry said earlier it was likely six babies died from drinking toxic milk powder. Another 294,000 infants suffered from urinary problems such as kidney stones.     The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine publicized the names of 22 dairy companies which produced milk products containing melamine after milk powder produced by Sanlu Group was found to contain the banned chemical in mid September.
