An officer who hit and killed Susan Lotempio, 64, in a car crash last Friday was not driving with emergency lights or sirens on, Buffalo Police revealed Thursday morning.An attorney representing the officer confirmed to Scripps station WKBW in Buffalo that the man is Officer Daniel Ahearn.Lotempio was taking her morning walk near Hertel Ave and Tennyson Ave when an officer hit her with his police car. She died at the scene.The manual for Buffalo Police officers differentiates calls for service into three categories: routine, rapid and emergency response, according to Buffalo Police Captain Jeff Rinaldo."Based on the nature of the call that the officer was responding to, it would fall either within the routine or rapid response," Captain Rinaldo explained. "But, based on our very preliminary investigation, the officer was following our policy and it was not a call for service that necessarily dictated the use of the emergency lights and sirens."The Buffalo News first reported details about the emergency lights and sirens, citing anonymous police sources who said the officer "was traveling at between 30 and 40 mph, providing backup for another police officer going to a complaint about "an irrational person" on Starin Avenue"."At this point, we do not believe that speed was a factor," Captain Rinaldo said. "But, again, we're waiting on the final accident reconstruction from the State Police."Tom Burton, the attorney representing Officer Daniel Ahearn, said the officer is cooperating with investigators. An operation is underway to evacuate thousands of tourists after a deadly earthquake that rocked some of Indonesia's most idyllic islands late Sunday night.At least 98 people, all Indonesian nationals, were killed when the 6.9 magnitude quake struck the popular tourist island of Lombok, Indonesian authorities said Monday. More than 200 were also injured.The majority of those killed in the quake were hit by falling debris from collapsing buildings, said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, the head of Indonesia's disaster management department.In total, an estimated 20,000 people have been displaced by the massive earthquake, Nugroho said.Dramatic video tweeted by authorities showed hundreds of people, many believed to be foreign vacationers, crammed onto a beach on the island of Gili Trawangan as evacuation measures got underway.Emergency personnel were racing to evacuate thousands of tourists from the three small Gili Islands as night began to fall. The islands, famous for their white sandy beaches and clear waters, are located near the epicenter of the quake on Lombok.Earlier rescue efforts were hampered by shallow waters, but rising sea waters mean nine ships are now expected to dock on the islands.So far, up to 2,700 tourists have been moved from the Gili Islands, according to Nugroho. An Elkhorn, Nebraska man accused of sending prostitutes to his neighbor's house was sentenced to four years in prison.Doug Goldsberry pleaded no contest to one count of pandering in September. On Friday, a Douglas County judge gave him the maximum penalty.The judge says Goldsberry's "screening process" by seeing how far he could get the women to go was a concern for the court.Investigators were called to a home in March. The homeowners told deputies with the Douglas County Sheriffs Office they were fearful because women identifying themselves as escorts or prostitutes had been exposing themselves and demanding money.The complaint says a family with two small children lived at the house and the women would go on their porch and strip down or lift their shirts off, and one woman urinated in their bushes.Deputies conducted surveillance and brought in two women who were seen exposing themselves at the home. The complaint says investigators were able to determine through phone records Goldsberry, who lives across the street, had sent the women and would tell them to commit the acts so he knew they weren't undercover officers.According to the complaint, Goldsberry told investigators he would watch the girls out of his kitchen window, which faced his neighbor's porch, and sometimes take pictures and would become sexually aroused.
