A South Florida mother is hoping a social media blitz will help President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris see her daughter's letter to them.Sydney Carlo, who lives in Cooper City, wrote the letter Saturday after learning that Biden and Harris were the projected winners of the election. I voted for you in my school's election. Just like you two, I want to grow up and help my country. America is a great country but you made it a lot better."Her mother, Samantha Carlo, said her daughter showed that dedication by keeping up with the presidential election. "Sydney has been following the election, so every morning since Tuesday, Nov. 3, the first thing she's done is walk into my room and say, 'Do we know who won yet?'" Carlo told WPTV.Sydney said she wanted to share her feelings. "I just let my heart out and I did what I wanted to say to him, that he's doing a great job and that he's a great person," she said.Her mother shared the letter on her Instagram page, tagging Biden and Harris. She's hoping it will be shared enough times that the future president and vice president take notice. You can only imagine the amount of times I thought about writing this. The way I would write it, how I would feel thereafter. Well, not entirely sure why now is the right time, and what it is that feels exciting and liberating for me to talk. I cannot explain it. Many of you wonder what happened to me, where did I disappear to and why. A journalist contacted me, he found a way to reach me and I told him everything this past summer. He was kind and it felt so amazing to finally speak. The truth is, and please trust me I am ok and safe now, I was raped and drugged and held captive over some days. Of course I survived. The recovery took time. There’s no light way to say it. But I can tell you in the last decade, the thousands and thousands of days I committed to wanting to feel the sunshine in my heart again, the sun does now shine. You wonder why I did not choose to use my voice to express my pain? I did not want to show the world the sadness in my eyes. I asked myself, how can I sing from the heart if it is broken? Handmade tortillas and rice and beans are all ingredients in some of Silvia Hernandez' most beloved meals. “I'm from Mexico City, so I love tacos,” she says. “My favorite dish is the carne asada taco.” Hernandez is an immigrant and came to the U.S. a few years ago. She knew how to cook, but she wanted to turn her passion and skill and wanted to turn her traditional Mexican cooking into a business. But she had no idea where to even start.“I didn't know anything about, you know, [the] process, license, requirements,” she says. “I did not even know where offices are located.” That’s where Slavitca Park came in. Park created the Comal Heritage Food Incubator as an outreach program. It’s for low-income immigrants, who needed help to start food businesses based around the cuisines of their homelands. “Everything from understanding, how do you build a menu, how do you source food, how do you price it, what kind of licensing, permitting, you need financing,” Park explains of the education the program provides. The incubator, which acts as a learning kitchen of sorts, is packed five days a week. Here, the women create their own dishes and train with professional chefs. The program now includes refugees from Syria and Ethiopia. “I always say food is one of those things that absolutely transcends everything,” Park says. “I just really think that food is the vehicle that builds the community. Breaking breads. That's what it’s all about.” Hernandez completed the program and now has her own catering company. But she says she just can’t stay away from the program. She still works a couple shifts a week in the incubator. Park loves hearing the stories of those who complete the program."What comes out of it, it’s nothing short of pure magic,” she says. 1783
BALTIMORE, Md. – In the Matthew Henson community of Baltimore, Dr. Marvin “Doc” Cheatham knows the neighborhood’s numbers. “These are rowhouses. 40 or 50 of them in a block,” he said, “1,200 houses; total 363 vacant or boarded up houses. It’s awful.” His Baltimore neighborhood is no stranger to challenges. “It’s tough. Very poor. High crime. High dropout rate. Open air drug markets,” Dr. Cheatham said. McKean Park, though, may be the start of something new. The abandoned homes that once sat there are now gone – and have a new purpose. “We take it, we clean it up and we give it new life,” said Max Pollock with Brick and Board, a place where old wood finds new life. They are just one of several groups involved in the “Baltimore Wood Project.” “They came from a really, really old structure,” Pollock said, as he showed off a 200-year-old piece of lumber. The idea works like this: before an abandoned building is torn down, crews salvage all the materials they can get from it – like wood – and keep it out of landfills. At the same time, they give the people who live in those neighborhoods the job of doing that. “It gives you a new sense of your community,” said Baltimore native Kobe Bland, who works at Brick and Board. “You start to view your community a little different because you see the potential of what could be.” What started out as the “Baltimore Wood Project,” though, is now evolving into the “Urban Wood Project,” with the hope it could be replicated in other cities.” In just four years, they’ve salvaged one million square feet of wood. The USDA Forest Service is spearheading the project and the work to expand it. “This is wood for example locked up in these vacant and abandoned rowhomes that would otherwise be wasted – sent to the landfill or otherwise wasted – and we see the potential to capture and reuse that wood for a greater good,” said Sarah Hines of the USDA Forest Service, who has worked on the project in Baltimore. Back in his neighborhood, Doc Cheatham said he’s seen what kind of change it can bring. “It brings hope,” he said.It’s a hope that comes from salvaging the past, to try and build a better future. 2171
