ARIZONA — First responders put their lives on the line at school shootings — and see the sad aftermath of what a gunman can do.But now, first responders are offering school districts a simple device to help students survive when a shooter attacks. It's a sad sign of the times but it is something we have to think about all the time now: the idea of an armed intruder going into a school, or some other place and doing as much killing as they possibly can. Now, locally there's a very simple idea to help make the schools safer.A fire hose is a strong, simple life saving tool. After years of high pressure use it’s retired. But now old hose has a new way to save lives. A small slice of that tough tubing can prevent a shooter from getting into a classroom.Grant Reed of Rural Metro Fire Department showed how to apply the piece of fire hose to a typical door closer, common in many schools."We're gonna slide it right over here, right over this hydraulic arm. The goal is to keep this where it cannot open anymore so it's pretty simple to go on. Just attach it. Once it's slid over the arms makes it a lot more difficult for this door to open." Rural Metro says the sleeves were first used in Kansas. Many schools are beginning to use them.Rural Metro is sharing these security sleeves with the Tanque Verde School District and other districts Rural Metro serves. The Pima County Sheriff's Department was happy to see schools have another way to buy time while deputies rush to take down a shooter. School Resource Deputy Scott McLeod says the sleeves are something a teacher can put on fast, then take other steps to make the room a tougher target."I tell the teachers enlist the help of your students if you are in a true lockdown scenario, enlist your students, have them help you out, barricade the door and also use the sleeve." Tanque Verde Superintendent Scott Hagerman works to balance education with emergency training.“Just enough knowledge that they feel safe and comfortable but not such a focus that all we are thinking about is the day to day, how do we keep ourselves safe, that we can just know what we need to know but then let's get back to school." 2181

Andrew Drechsel, who was crowned champion of "American Ninja Warrior" last year, was arrested and federally charged "with seeking sex with a minor and inducing her to send him sexual explicit images," U.S. Attorney for New Jersey Craig Carpenito said in a statement."Drechsel, 31, of Saint Cloud, Florida, was charged with the manufacture of child pornography, enticement of a minor to travel for illicit sexual conduct, traveling with the intent to engage in illicit sexual conduct with a minor, and use of interstate commerce to entice a minor," Carpenito said in the news release. "He (Drechsel) made his initial appearance today (Wednesday) in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida, prior to his transfer to the District of New Jersey."According to the court documents, Drechsel, and the alleged victim first met in 2014 at an event attended by numerous "American Ninja Warriors" contestants. In 2015, Drechsel and the alleged victim, then 15, first had sex at his Hamden, Connecticut gym, the court affidavit stated. The affidavit says the teen told her mother, who then confronted Drechsel. The mother said when told Drechsel that the alleged victim had just turned 15, he didn't deny having sex but stated he did not know her daughter's age, the affidavit said.In June 2019, the alleged victim, who was 19, made a complaint to the Cherry Hill Police Department in New Jersey, stating that she and Drechsel had sexual encounters multiple times when she was 15 to 17 years old, court records said.Drechsel's lawyer, Frank Riccio, said in a Tweet on Tuesday that his client plans on pleading not guilty. 1634

As COVID-19 continues to spread throughout the United States, traveling nurses jump from hot spot to hot spot, caring for patients and making sure hospitals are fully staffed. Grover Street is one of those nurses and specializes in trauma and intensive care.“I’ve worked in over 100 hospitals and probably 15 different states,” Street said.Street says just this year alone, he's been in New York, Miami, and California. He hops all over the country, doing four-week assignments for crisis nursing and coronaivurs relief. "Busy" and "intense" barely describe what he's experienced on the front lines.“I like going to the hot zones and really learning about this virus and learning about the different patients and human functionality and the way people think about this whole process because it’s probably never going to happen in my lifetime again,” Street said. While interesting from a scientific standpoint, he admits, it's natural to be afraid of this virus that has taken over our world.“I’ve worked with nurses that their families died, the nurse died,” Street said. “I worked with a physician, he died. This is real and I’ve been on the front lines since it started and its sad that a lot of people aren’t wearing masks and social distancing.”He says he prefers the traveling nurse aspect of his profession. There's more flexibility, and he says, it's better pay. As a former trauma nurse in the military, it's like a deployment. Except this time, he's being sent to a different type of war zone.“New York is starting to pick back up, Florida is starting to pick back up,” Street said. “I’m getting texts and emails everyday, 'Am I ready to go somewhere else as soon as this assignment ends?'”Lauren Pasquale Bartlett is the Senior Vice President of Marketing for Fastaff Travel Nursing, the agency for whom Street works. When asked how her organization fulfills the need, she said, “It's never a matter of how are we going to do it, it's at what scale.”“At this time last year, we had 3,000 nurses on assignment right, now we’ve got 6,000,” Pasquale Bartlett added.Traveling nurses, she says, have been backfilling hospitals for 30 years.“It really came out of the strike business when nurses were unionizing and going on strikes, they needed replacement nurses so the hospital started bringing in travel nurses to replace those striking nurses,” Pasquale Bartlett said. They answer the call when there are hurricanes, fires, intense flu seasons, and the coronavirus. Except, unlike those other short-lived events, there doesn't seem to be an end in sight.“I know everybody (is) tired of what’s going on, ready to get back out there, go shopping, have parties, but we need to control this before you die or before your family member dies and then it’s too late so just stay safe,” Street said.Street says the difference between responses in each state is fascinating. He's looking forward to a bit of rest and relaxation before his next assignment and says his only wish is that everyone does their part, by washing hands, and wearing a mask to help protect medical staff and each other. 3101
