WASHINGTON, D.C. – The federal eviction moratorium is set to expire Friday, putting millions of Americans at risk of being kicked out of their homes during the COVID-19 pandemic.The CARES Act provided certain protections from eviction and late fees due to nonpayment of rent for most tenants in federally subsidized or federally backed housing. However, those protections were only in effect from March 27 to July 24.When the moratorium ends, landlords can give tenants who haven’t paid rent 30 days’ notice and then begin filing eviction paperwork in late August.The Urban Institute estimates that the eviction moratorium applied to about 12.3 million of the 43.8 million rental units in the United States, or around 28%. If the protections are not extended, those 12.3 million renters could be at risk.So far, there aren’t any plans to extend the moratorium.However, The Washington Post reports that the House has passed legislation to create a 0 billion rental assistance fund, which would help renters at the lowest income levels for up to two years. The Senate hasn't acted on that bill. The Trump administration and Senate Republicans are hurrying to present a new coronavirus relief bill of their own before the end of the session, but it doesn’t yet appear to include protections for renters. WASHINGTON (AP) — The Republican National Committee is sharply restricting attendance on three of the four nights of its convention in Jacksonville, Florida, next month as coronavirus cases are spiking in the state.RNC chair Ronna McDaniel says only the roughly 2,500 regular delegates to the convention will be permitted to attend the opening three nights.Delegates, their guests and alternate delegates will be permitted to attend the final night, Aug. 27, when President Donald Trump is set to deliver his acceptance speech.The Washington Post obtained a letter sent to delegates about scaling back the convention. In the letter, McDaniel reportedly says attendees will be offered coronavirus testing, temperature checks and PPE, and aggressive sanitizing protocols will be in effect.McDaniel says the party hoped to be able to plan a traditional convention, but adjustments have to be made to comply with state and local health guidelines.The GOP moved the convention from Charlotte, after officials in the North Carolina city ruled out a full-capacity crowd because of the pandemic. 1095

It's one way they've united in one voice to try to make a difference.  But some students are using art, and billboards, to send a message of their own.           For Yoki Ogbai, the overalls she's painting are more than a school project"Our colors are red and white," Ogbai said. "So a lot of wings a lot of bows glitter all types of crazy.The overalls are her latest work of art."Art for me is like a big sense of release," Ogbai said.Born in East Africa, she used art as expression when she moved to the U.S and a way for people to see her for who she is."A lot of times people don't really try to understand and don't really try to get to know a person before creating their onw ways," Ogbai said.  "Their own idea of who you are."So when she heard about a contest called the "Healing As One" campaign, she figured it would be an opportunity to inspire thousands to take a look at things in a different way."Cause he's kind of taking a picture and was like through the lens," Ogbai said.That idea grew into a billboard on a busy intersection that reads, "See Me, I Am Denver.""To be seen is to be acknowledged for everything you are and not for what you're expected to be," Ogbai says.Ogbai's billboard is just one of several in the Healing As One initiative. The topics are timely. One reads education not deportation. And others, encourage people to have courage and hope.Albany Reynolds designed the hope billboard."For me it's amazing because I've always been someone who wanted to speak out about issues like that," Reynolds said.  "And just bring attention to that."She placed the word over a picture she took of her classmate Kelly."It's giving us leeway to have artistic freedom and to put our ideas out there," Reynolds said.
