SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 25-year-old was arrested Wednesday following an officer-involved shooting sparked by a chase late Saturday night. According to police, Alfonso Flores, 25, was arrested and charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer, one count of evading and one count of possession of a stolen vehicle. Officers tried to pull over a Ford F-150 that was reported stolen around 10:30 p.m. Saturday on the 1900 block of Dairy Mart Road.Police say the driver didn’t stop, instead driving into a cul-de-sac, making a u-turn and driving toward officers.RELATED: Chase leads to officer-involved shooting in Imperial Beach“Believing his partner was going to be run over, one officer fired his service weapon to defend the other officer,” police said in a news release.At some point during the pursuit, police say Flores threw a handgun out of the truck.RELATED: One shot, killed at Linda Vista recreation centerThe suspect eventually stopped on the 1200 block of Holly Avenue in Imperial Beach and ran away from the scene with a female passenger.Police say the officer who fired at the suspect is a three-year veteran of the department. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A driver was killed and several teens were injured Tuesday night in a high-speed solo vehicle crash along State Route 905 in south San Diego.The crash happened on the westbound lanes near the Beyer Boulevard off-ramp about 9:15 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.The driver lost control of the dark-colored Chrysler 300, struck the center divide, and was ejected from the car. The victim was declared dead at the scene. It was initially reported that the driver, a 21-year-old male, was a teenager. Firefighters worked to extricate two passengers trapped in the rear passenger seats, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.The injured victims, three males and two females ranging in age between 15- to 21-years-old, were transported to UCSD and Scripps Mercy for their injuries. Their conditions are unknown at this time.CHP officers are investigating if drugs, alcohol, or distracted driving contributed to the crash.Investigators are asking anyone that witnessed the crash to contact the California Highway Patrol.The Beyer Boulevard on-ramp to the westbound state Route 905 was shut down until at least midnight, according to the CHP. 1191

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A fourth suspect has been arrested in connection with the murder of a 44-year-old in Bay Terraces back in June.San Diego Police say 27-year-old Leaoaisemativa Sandoval was arrested on Dec. 19 and charged with the murder of Sean Nixon. Prosecutors say on June 6, Nixon was strangled with a strap from a marijuana grow tent inside a home on Freed Manor Lane.SDPD officers have also arrested Glenn Montano, Alfredo Sales Montano Jr., and Joshua Barnum. All were booked into County Jail for murder.The District Attorney’s Office says that Glen Montano wrapped the strap around the victim’s neck, while Alfredo Montano struck Nixon multiple times and kicked him while he was being strangled.Two of the suspects, who are brothers, were allegedly running an illegal gambling den and cannabis grow operation at the home. 840

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego leaders returned from their trip to Mexico City on Wednesday night. The three-day trip focused on building stronger border relations. The trip comes a week after President Trump threatened to close the border if congress didn't come up with an immigration deal or if Mexico didn't stop migrants heading north. The delegation included San Diego and Imperial Beach mayors, Kevin Faulconer and Serge Dedina and former mayor Jerry Sanders. Several city council members from various cities also attended meeting with top Mexican officials. A big topic of conversation was the ongoing Tijuana sewage issue. Impeiral Beach Mayor, Dedina, says the conversations were positive and promising. Dedina says plans to fix the issue include reapairing the water plant that's currently spilling the sewage, taking all of the water out of the Tijuana River Valley and putting an earth-fill dam on the Mexican side to stop the sewage from getting to the beaches. San Diego leaders say the trip was productive and explained that the end goal was to find solutions to enhance the region for the benefit of both countries. 1142

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - UC San Diego is the seventh-best university and the best public school in the country, according to just-released rankings from Washington Monthly.UCSD fell slightly in the nonprofit magazine's rankings compared to 2017, when the school ranked sixth overall but second to Texas A&M among public universities. Harvard took over the top spot on the list from Stanford, first on last year's list, with MIT, Princeton and Yale rounding out the top five.Washington Monthly ranks schools based on a number of factors, the theme being how positively each school impacts its community and the country at large.
