LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — For the first time, a Black woman will lead Kentucky's Louisville Metro Police Department, which has been heavily criticized since officers fatally shot Breonna Taylor. Mayor Greg Fischer announced on Monday that Yvette Gentry will serve as interim chief. The Courier-Journal reports Gentry is a former Louisville Metro Police deputy chief who retired from the force in 2014. She will be the first woman and third African American to serve as chief. Gentry's appointment comes at a low point in relations between police and Black residents in Louisville. Protesters have marched for more than 100 consecutive days since police raided Taylor's home and killed her. 694

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) — A Louisville man, arrested just outside of Chicago, is accused of killing a woman and putting her body parts in a suitcase to visit his family several hours away, according to multiple media outlets. The Louisville Metro Police Department says they were able to track the homicide back to a home in their area, after getting information from investigators in Illinois.Police in Markham, Illinois, a Chicago suburb close to the Indiana border, said the suspect's family picked up the man from a Greyhound bus stop in Chicago recently. "He brought with him luggage two, three bags," Markham Police Chief Terry White told WBBM. Chief White says the family claims they did not know what was in his bags, but became suspicious when the man never unpacked and allegedly kept guarding the bags. Police say the family reported a foul odor was leaking from a suitcase. Police were called when a family member opened the suitcase while the man was out and found the body parts, according to WBBM. "A human body part was discovered. They immediately back away and called police," Chief White said.Officials say the suspect has been arrested. The man's identity or any charges have not been released at this time.LMPD, Markham police and the FBI are investigating the case. The family is cooperating with investigators. 1339
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Kentucky’s attorney general has received a long-awaited ballistics report in the police shooting of Breonna Taylor. Attorney General Daniel Cameron tweeted Sunday that there is additional analysis needed now that the report is in his hands. He says there will be no announcement on the investigation this week. Cameron has indicated the ballistics report has slowed the investigation of Taylor’s death by police on March 13. Taylor was shot in her home by police as they served a no-knock narcotics warrant on her home. Cameron has faced intense pressure from activists who want the officers charged in Taylor's killing. 647
Michelle Obama's nationwide tour for her new book "Becoming" has already helped the book achieve a publishing milestone.Barnes & Noble said Monday that Obama had "the biggest first-week sales of any book this year."Until November, that title belonged to Bob Woodward's Trump administration dissection, "Fear," which came out in September. But "Becoming" had even stronger sales in its first week, the bookseller said.Beyond just this year, B&N said "Becoming" had "the best first-week sales of an adult book since 'Go Set a Watchman' published in July, 2015."It has been nearly two years since the Obamas left the White House, but there is still intense interest in the former president and first lady."Becoming" remains No. 1 on the online lists kept by both the Amazon and Barnes & Noble websites. Her book landed in Amazon's No. 1 spot on Friday, November 9, and has not budged since.A gauntlet of TV interviews, including all three network morning shows, surely helped sales. The interviews will continue later this month. On Friday, November 30, she will be on "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.""Becoming" came out on November 13. It is almost certain to rank No. 1 on the New York Times best selling books list, but that list won't officially come out until Wednesday. All the interest in the title — plus her nationwide arena tour — has stoked new speculation about her political prospects. Is there any chance she'd run for political office?"Let me be very clear, it will never happen," Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett told Alisyn Camerota on "New Day" Monday morning. As for Obama's husband, he is working on finishing his own memoir. Both books were acquired by Penguin Random House in a bidding war back in early 2017."Writing's hard," Barack Obama said at his foundation's annual summit on Monday. "I'm just sitting there, I type two words... delete."His remarks about the difficulties of writing were reported by The Atlantic. He reportedly told people to go buy his wife's book. 2009
