SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — While California issued a "stay at home" order to slow the spread of the coronavirus, several "essential" services are still open.Thursday night, Gov. Gavin Newsom issued the order requiring Californians to remain home amid the COVID-19 pandemic.But residents aren't totally locked into their homes during the order.RELATED: What's the difference? SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- A new technology just reached San Diego and Border Patrol agents say it’s going to help them do their jobs faster, easier and more efficiently. They’re called Mobile Video Surveillance Systems. Each unit is grounded to a Ford F150, the controls to operate the cameras mounted on a mast in the bed of the truck are inside. San Diego is the second place in the nation to have truck like these. Border Patrol says they’ll be rolling out in just a couple days. The first place to have Mobile Video Surveillance System trucks is Rio Grande Valley, Texas. Michael Scappechio is a supervisory with Border Patrol and he tells 10 News, “the looming threat of the migrant caravan in Tijuana and more people potentially on the way we need to make sure we’re prepared for that”. The two cameras allow the agents to see two pictures at all times, a daytime camera and an infrared camera. While Scappechio says the need for this kind of technology is needed in San Diego, it’s their increased rate of arrests that landed the trucks here, “nearly a 90 percent increase is significant, that’s going to get attention, that’s going to get resources, that’s going to get man power, infrastructure and technology”.Border Patrol tells 10 News these trucks won’t replace the border wall but instead, will go hand in hand with it. 1334

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Wildfire season is here and county officials want to make sure San Diegans are prepared. As summer heats up and brush dries out, Cal Fire is urging everyone to create a wildfire action plan. According to the agency, the plan should be familiar to all members of your household well in advance of a fire. This includes making an emergency supply kit and creating an evacuation plan. If you’re unsure how to start preparing a wildfire action plan, Cal Fire has some tips. Create an evacuation plan that includes:· A designated emergency meeting location outside the fire or hazard area. This is critical to determine who has safely evacuated from the affected area.· Several different escape routes from your home and community. Practice these often so everyone in your family is familiar in case of emergency.· Have an evacuation plan for pets and large animals such as horses and other livestock.· A Family Communication Plan that designates an out-of-area friend or relative as a point of contact to act as a single source of communication among family members in case of separation. (It is easier to call or message one person and let them contact others than to try and call everyone when phone, cell, and internet systems can be overloaded or limited during a disaster.) Be Prepared:· Have fire extinguishers on hand and train your family how to use them (check expiration dates regularly).· Ensure that your family knows where your gas, electric, and water main shut-off controls are located and how to safely shut them down in an emergency.· Assemble an Emergency Supply Kit for each person, as recommended by the American Red Cross. (See next section for details.)· Maintain a list of emergency contact numbers posted near your phone and in your emergency supply kit.· Keep an extra Emergency Supply Kit in your car in case you cannot get to your home because of fire or other emergency.· Have a portable radio or scanner so you can stay updated on the fire.· Tell your neighbors about Ready, Set, Go! and your Wildfire Action Plan. Rich Stropky. "But come talk to us first; We will describe the do's and don'ts and any safety issues."In addition to the usual rip currents and stingrays, lifeguards say people need to be careful about over-exertion and heat-related illness like heat stroke or dehydration.Study: Longer and more frequent heatwaves expected for Southern California"Especially if you're at a beach like Torrey Pines, where you have to hike in or hike out," said Stropky. "So, bring lots of water. Hydrate often, not just when you're thirsty. And then stay cool, get some shade and make sure that sunscreen's on."Lifeguards also say they expect big crowds, which means swimmers and boaters will have to share the water.Tragedy struck last weekend when a Jet Ski and boat collided, killing one person. Stropky said everyone needs to have a heightened sense of awareness and keep their head on a swivel."It's very very dangerous," he said. "We've had several accidents.
