Virtual reality could soon play a role in helping during childbirth. Some women are watching relaxing scenery and listening to soothing sounds during labor with VR goggles. It’s part of the research being done at Cedars-Sinai, a medical center in Los Angeles. The research is being done to see if VR can help ease pain as labor gets more intense. “What we did find was that women found it very helpful,” says Dr. Melissa Wong, who specializes in OB/GYN and maternal fetal medicine at Cedars-Sinai. “That women were describing it … one of my favorite descriptions of it was a woman (who) spoke about it as being like a virtual doula." That's some of the early feedback from women who took part in the study.Wong says there were some women who found the headset isolating because you can’t see others. But she thinks VR could be useful, whether someone is using pain medication or not. “I think it has the potential for the woman who wants to defer her epidural,” Wong says. “And then the other thing is, there are women who also don’t get complete relief from an epidural or who still feel significant anxiety even after an epidural.”The full results of the study will include the pain management scores and will be released in February 2020. 1255

A malnourished dog that wandered into a Philadelphia home during a storm has been adopted.Sports podcaster Jack Jokinen said his wife found the dog when she went to grab a pacifier for their baby at 4 a.m. Saturday. She woke Jokinen up and he rushed downstairs where all the doors and windows were closed. After watching surveillance footage of his home, Jokinen figured out that the wind had blown his front door wide open for several hours, he said in a video he posted on Twitter. The surveillance footage showed a dog limp through the door at about 3:15 a.m. About 30 minutes later, a man walked up, yelled to check on everyone in the house and shut the door.Jokinen took the dog, who is now named Suzy, to the vet where he learned that she had fleas, ticks and a heart murmur among other ailments.“She's in a warm house," Jokinen 845
A man in Texas was arrested and charged with aggravated robbery after his fiancée saw a social media post of him robbing a bank the day before their wedding so he could pay for the ring and the venue.Heath Edward Bumpous allegedly approached a bank teller at Citizens State Bank in Groveton, Texas, on Friday and said that he had a gun and demanded money, the Trinity County Sheriff's Office said. The 36-year-old Crocket, Texas, man was given the money and left the scene. The Trinity County Sheriff's Office posted images of Bumpous on their Facebook page following the robbery, asking the public for help in finding the alleged robber. His fiancée saw the photos and recognized Bumpous."His fiancée ... was able to get in touch with him on the phone when she saw our post on Facebook," Trinity County Sheriff Woody Wallace said on Facebook. "She knew it was him, she contacted him and asked him if he had robbed the bank."Bumpous' fiancée was able to convince him to turn himself in, Wallace said."He basically stated that he was getting married tomorrow, so he didn't have enough money for a wedding ring that he wanted to buy and he needed to pay for the wedding venue, so apparently that's what the money was for," Wallace said.Bumpous gave a full confession and is currently being held at Trinity County Jail. 1327
A 70-year-old physician accused of cheating at this year's Los Angeles Marathon has died by suicide, officials said.Dr. Frank Meza, 70, was found dead in the Los Angeles River last Thursday. The Los Angeles County coroner's office listed his cause of death as "blunt force traumatic injuries" and said the manner of death was suicide.Last month, Meza clocked an astonishing time of 2 hours, 53 minutes and 10 seconds at the Los Angeles Marathon. It would have been a record for his age group. But that record was thrown out after marathon officials said they reviewed security footage and showed Meza leaving and re-entering the course at different places.Last week, Meza's widow said she didn't believe her husband would have taken his own life. But Meza's family did say he was under enormous stress over his disqualification and the cheating claims made in blog posts and media reports. And they believe he was treated unjustly."He was targeted, bullied and we tried to defend him the best we could," his daughter Lorena Meza told CNN on Friday. "He was so devastated that people could actually believe this."How the race officials and others say he cheatedThe controversy started after Meza, a retired South Pasadena physician and a longtime runner, finished the Los Angeles Marathon on March 24.His 2:53:10 time across 26.2 miles -- averaging about 6:37 minutes per mile -- was extraordinary at his age.The total time would have been more than a minute faster than the 1485
